Adding 17 year old to car insurance, can anyone help?

DS is 17 (not 18 till late august) and has just passed his driving test. We can’t afford a car for him but I’ve said I’ll look into adding him to my insurance so he can use my car a bit over the summer, before heading off (fingers crossed) to university in September.

My insurance is through the AA, and when I rang they said my current insurer doesn’t insure under 18s. My policy doesn’t end till October.

I’ve looked at several companies that do temporary add-on insurance, but they all seem to be for age 18 and above.

Can anyone recommend a company that can help?

thank you

Be prepared to pay a small fortune!

Congratulations to your son. We used Marmalade when my daughter was 17.

We used Marmalade too and it was really easy.

Another vote for Marmalade

I was with either Elephant or Admiral when DD was learning/passed test. Happy to add her to my then 110PS Xantia Estate albeit with a premium close to £1k (in 2010) and eye-watering excess if she damaged it.

Otherwise all good. She drove it quite a bit both solo and with family on board.

Driving a medium/large car rather than a super mini was great for her confidence.

Admiral. Think it was 1k though.

Thank you - do they all involve getting a black box which I then also have to get an app for?! All sounds so techie to me!!

We used marmalade too.

We use Marmalade. It's super simple to use and DD now has two years no claims, which will make a huge difference when we just add her to the main policy.

Marmalade here too. It does have a black box but it's only DS's phone that connects to it via an app so it doesn't measure my driving. It gives them a rating after every drive which means they have to drive really carefully.
