Would welcome opinions from anyone who knows the area or has stayed there please. We only have a few nights the there. Must sees are Santa Monica Beach, Rodeo Drive and the Griffith Observatory.

These are my options:

I would go for the Beverly Hills

Venice Beach has a huge amount of homeless people living on the street many are extremely unwell (and should be in a care setting they are extremely vulnerable ) open drug taking, families with young children, people suffering from psychosis it’s really shocking. sad and depressing. In the day it’s not quite so obvious

Santa Monica is ok but again quite a number of homeless on the streets it’s really changed in a few years not for the better

Beverly Hills is the glamorous LA we tend to often think of and can get to other areas quickly. The metro is good but would avoid in the evening as it’s shelter for the many living on the streets

I agree about Venice beach and Santa Monica. We had a fantastic stay at shutters on the beach but didn’t go out after dark.

The Beverley Hilton was very good, if I was going back I’d probably stay at the Beverley Hills or Chateau Marmont

The Highland hotel is within walking distance of the walk of fame, Graumans theatre, Hooters etc

Thank you. I wasn't aware of the homeless issue in those areas, it's incredibly sad.

I've stayed at The Beverly Hilton many times, it's a great hotel but I really miss the department store Robinsons that was within walking distance but now closed down.

barmycatmum · 29/05/2023 23:14

No don’t stay in Venice. Santa Monica is ok

Vanillalime · 29/05/2023 23:28

Of the three, I would go for the Beverly Hilton. I think the location is better than the others. I enjoyed visiting Venice during the day for a walk around a the beach area & canals, but would prefer to stay closer to the other attractions.

Wow I honestly didn't realise about Venice!

Yeah I agree with the Venice beach comments. Unfortunately after many fabulous stays there I wouldnt touch the place with a barge pole.....and I would also probably include Santa Monica in that. The homeless population has exploded and although, on the whole they dont cause any bother, it makes for an uncomfortable experience. Our last 2 stays were in Manhattan beach area but thats probably not the right location for your stay. I hope you have a fabulous stay OP because we truly loved LA...but its just not for us anymore 😥

Just throwing in a different option - I stayed at Burbank, felt entirely safe and pleasant. Not too far from anywhere, we never struggled with traffic etc and we did all the things you mentioned, plus Universal, Warner Bros, The Grove etc.

KenAdams · 30/05/2023 17:10

Interesting re Burbank I thought it might be too far out. Hotels there are much cheaper.

We didn't find it far out at all and it's close to Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, the studios, close to Hollywood. Obviously a little further out from Santa Monica etc but we only went there once and that was enough for me, I didn't like it at all!

I've been to LA, and your choices look solid! The Kinney Venice Beach has that cool vibe, perfect for Santa Monica Beach fun. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these, but if I were to pick, The Kinney's unique style might add some extra charm to your LA stay. However, I mostly prefer traveling in Europe and would choose the Old Royal Post hotel if I could. But we are talking about LA!
