Visiting relatives in Skegness at the weekend and would like a day/evening at a quieter, smaller town.

Could anyone suggest somewhere close by please?

Sutton on Sea is nice, the beach there is lovely and there is also a paddling pool if you have children going with you.
There is also a very nice fish and chip restaurant at the top of the main street

Anderby creek? Mabelthorpe?

Not seaside but has a lido.

Chapel St Leonard's

Sutton on sea!

definitely not Chapel St Leonards. Nothing to do there.

Do not go to Mablethorpe…. It’s an absolute dive!!

Sutton on sea is about the best you will get along that bit of coast.

clpsmum · 29/05/2023 21:22

Cleethorpes

kingcharlesbaby · 29/05/2023 21:23

Mablethorpe is a dump!

thewonderfulthingabouttigger · 29/05/2023 21:24

Not Mabo or Cleethorpes! Sutton on Sea is alright if you want coastal. If you just want a lovely market town go to Louth.

Thank you x

I loved Mablethorpe last time I went!
(Which admittedly was probably in the late eighties / early nineties.) It was so bad that it was great! Rides for my then 5 yr old for 2p!
Fab old slot machines, too. We had a ball! Is it till like that, does anyone know?

thewonderfulthingabouttigger · 30/05/2023 14:08

It still has arcades but it's quite run down and there isn't much 'money' there. Everything shuts down in the winter and business doesn't do so well there. There are more mobility scooters than dogs these days too.

The beach is alright. But I would steer clear of Mabo in summer. Although I would choose Mabo over Skeg!

Alford - independent shops and a regular little craft market with live music

Azandme · 30/05/2023 14:14

Anderby Creek is lovely. If you don't want a beach then Woodhall Spa is a favourite.

CeciNestPasUnPipi · 30/05/2023 14:17

I used to live in that area (in Alford). I couldn't recommend one. I couldn't leave fast enough.

Seasonofthewitch83 · 30/05/2023 14:41

My sister just moved to Mablethorpe, the beach is gorgeous. Cute beach huts. Gerardos is a nice italian in the town for dinner. Cheap ice creams and donuts, playground and splashpark for kids.

marinerkk2 · 30/05/2023 14:58

I live in Louth, saw this and instantly thought Sutton on sea, it's lovely there.

Cleethorpes

I know you're joking but I have such a soft spot for Cleethorpes.
I always have a great time when I go, in all seasons and the beach is lovely for a walk along, or building sandcastles, or a walk right out when the tide is out.

Deathraystare · 30/05/2023 15:26

I am from West London and was looking for a nice seaside place. I looked into posts on youtube by Tim walk with me where he walked all along Mapelthorpe beach. I could see it was a typical seaside place which is just what I like but the accommodation seemed pricey

I went to Louth last summer and loved it.
The gorgeous big church with a stained glass window in the loo the market, the museum.
I had a lovely day there and would recommend it.
