Where to relocate with this criteria

Restfuluhhcuuh · 28/05/2023 14:14

Looking to relocate in the next 12 months or so. We' have 3 children who are all at uni so not sure if any of them will be coming to stay with us for a few years or not. d like to relocate to somewhere with this criteria:

Art, culture, museums, theatre
Sailing, water sports access nearby
Countryside not too far.
Fairly safe. Have lived in rough areas so my safe criteria isn't that stringent
Multicultural - we are a mixed race family. DH is white I'm not. My kids all look like me.

Our work is all remote so anywhere is okay.

Brighton ticks all your boxes. Beautiful South Downs on your door step, sea, water sports (not really surfing though) theatre, art. But it is expensive.

In May there is an arts festival all month.

Radi0Stockport · 28/05/2023 17:19

What is your budget OP?

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 28/05/2023 17:23

Aberdeen

kitsuneghost · 28/05/2023 17:28

Milton keynes

GettingStuffed · 28/05/2023 17:32

I'd also vote for Cardiff, Bristol is a young persons city.

Restfuluhhcuuh · 28/05/2023 17:44

Sorry my budget is £850 can be up to 1mil at a push but only for the absolute perfect place.

West coast of Scotland, central belt.

Nearer the coast eg Largs if you want to be right next to the water or near Loch Lomond/Argyll. If you want to be closer to the arts then closer in to Glasgow. West and south of city have had big Asian populations for 3+ generations, then even more diversity after the city was used as asylum accommodation from 00s.

Away from the schemes and estates in small towns isn't rough

FitAt50 · 28/05/2023 22:55

Glasgow

continentallentil · 28/05/2023 23:06

Bristol if South

I am not a Brighton fan

If you’d consider Scotland then I love Glasgow and Edinburgh is nice too

It is not!

Frome in Somerset.

Thanks some great suggestions. I have lived up north all my life so think would like a change and live a bit more south simply for the nicer weather. I know house prices are more ridiculous down south. I don't think I want to live all the way down to the south coast.

What do you think of Bristol - a friend's DH suggested that.

I think Bristol is perfect. It’s a city with a really lovely vibe, lots of museums and event spaces. I also think it’s a nice size city, not too large or small. Lots of countryside vey close by, especially if you live on the edges.

I imagine your budget would go further in Bristol than Brighton, however some areas of Bristol are still very expensive.

Also - totally anecdotal based on my personal observations of both places, and some may disagree, but from my experience Bristol seem to have more diversity than Brighton.

Frome is a lovely little place with lots going on. I lived there and loved it and would love back if I could. I wouldn’t call it multicultural though.

If by good weather you mean warmer and less rain then east of an imaginary line that extends down the Pennines to the New Forest is going to be better than west. It is the west side of Britain that is wetter than the east.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 29/05/2023 08:07

Littleborough - holllingworth for water sports, easy access to Manchester for all your arts and culture, easy access to the Calder valley and Saddleworth for countryside.
Multicutural and while not “smart” definitely not rough or unpleasant

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 29/05/2023 09:18

@Restfuluhhcuuh Shrewsbury is the best place in the entire world! We try not to shout too loudly about it though as it’s a bit of a secret.

It’s small enough to be friendly and safe but large enough to have a lot going on culturally. It’s got the largest stretch of independent shops in the UK. There’s a lot of stunning unspoilt countryside surrounding it as well. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly multicultural but it’s not insular and unwelcoming.

For 850k you could get a hell of a lot of house for your money.

Bristol is lovely but pricey. Brighton is really quite grotty in a lot of areas. If I had to choose between the two it would be Bristol every time.

nopeasplease · 29/05/2023 09:30

100% Edinburgh. It's beautiful and ticks off all of your wish list

Given that the OP has said she wants to live in the South of England, Edinburgh really doesn't meet the criteria

So is Bristol

LadyGAgain · 29/05/2023 09:43

Just north of Portsmouth - Petersfield and surrounding. Portsmouth has the historic dockyard plus the birth place of Charles dickens. Beach. Your budget would get you a decent sized property plus garden off the island. Petersfield (or close to) is in the South Downs national park and beautiful. 45 mins to the new forest too. Portsmouth is multi cultural.

This infographic has a bit about racial diversity in UK cities which might be useful

What type of sailing OP? You can sail on lakes as well as the sea.

Bedford

I live in north Leeds and it ticks all your boxes. We can be in the stunning Yorkshire countryside in about 10 mins. Plenty to do culturally - Lots of theatres, live music, art etc. A real mix of cultures and ethnicities live here and, as far as I can see, everyone gets on well. My children are mixed race and certainly don't stand out at school. Where we live (Weetwood/Far Headingley) feels very safe.
