If you used to enjoy listening to Greatest Hits Radio.....

....... where are you moving to now it is trying to morph into Radio2 ?

I've really enjoyed Greatest Hits for the past few years. I like nearly all the music, and, whenever I switch on for a short time (perhaps a short car journey, or just whilst I'm in the kitchen for a while doing some jobs), there always used to be good music guaranteed.
Since first Simon Mayo, and now especially Ken Bruce have moved over though, it seems half the time I switch on it is just talking. On the Ken Bruce show, including load of 'Joe Public' telling me about their life, then attempting a quiz.

Now, that's all fine if that's what you want to listen to. I am sure they are good at what they do. I understand many listeners have moved from Radio2 to Greatest Hits, but for those of us who just want to listen to the tunes, where do we go next ?

I listen a lot to absolute radio, I'm one of the radio 2 listeners who moved with Ken, and to be honest I'm not overly impressed so far.

GulesMeansRed · 27/05/2023 23:05

I like Nation radio. Completely eclectic mix. Turned on the car radio earlier to be serenaded by Gina G’s ooh aah just a little bit. Every time it’s on I’m like “I haven’t heard this one in years”. And not much chat.

I was an avid radio 2 listener. Trying to get used to greatest hits - like the songs but hate all the ads. Soooo many.
I mainly listen to Absolute, Absolute 80's, Radio X.
I tried Boom radio but couldn't get on with it

Lysianthus · 27/05/2023 23:16

Try radio 6

grayhairdontcare · 27/05/2023 23:26

I went to greatest hits with Ken but couldn't do the adverts,so I've gone back to radio 2

QueenofLouisiana · 27/05/2023 23:35

I’m also now on Nation Radio, a real mix.

NectarCard · 28/05/2023 00:02

Ever since Ken moved over I stopped listening 🤣 yes it’s full of chat and popmaster? Don’t get the fuss

deeplybaffled · 28/05/2023 00:05

Various Absolute stations here - 80s, 90s, Rock

maximist · 28/05/2023 00:19

I love Ken Bruce but think the music on GHR is dreadful, it's just so boring and samey, with nothing new or any interesting older stuff. I've paid for premium as I can't stand ads, but I might just give up on it altogether soon.

Guiltypleasures001 · 28/05/2023 00:23

I used to enjoy GHR but found the constant repeat of a few songs got on my nerves, always the same groups or artists
I prefer the huge selection on Absolute I'm quite in to their country channel at the moment or 80's

Yellowshirt · 28/05/2023 00:40

Heart 90s is good. Lots of music and they don't do the news every hour on the hour either.

Vernon Kay plays good music on radio 2 but chats rubbish, laughs to loud into the microphone and cuts songs at weird times.

Scott Mills just talks about the Eurovision song contest and plays absolutely shocking music.

Sarah Cox does play some good music on radio 2. At 4pm on a Friday she does 3 hours of song requests from listener's and that is usually a good 3 hours of music

Gtsr443 · 28/05/2023 02:24

Simon Mayo's album show is consistently brilliant.

The rest of GHR seems to be various ABBA songs on a loop. Still better than R2 though.

Brunnera · 28/05/2023 08:42

Absolute here too. 80s, 90s or rock depending on what mood I'm in!

usernother · 28/05/2023 08:49

I hop between greatest hits, radio x and boom depending on who is on and what they are playing. Never listen to radio 2 now.

Lindy2 · 28/05/2023 08:55

Hits Radio (different from Greatest Hits) or any of the Absolute ones are what I listen to.

ThatFlightyTemptressAdventure · 28/05/2023 09:09

I agree that Greatest Hits radio is not as good as it was. I don’t think the sort of chat and songs mix that works on Radio 2 is as good on commercial radio, by the time you’ve had news, traffic and adverts they play relatively little music. Also the ad breaks seem longer since they started the Premium option where you can pay and listen to a song instead.

I listen to Smooth quite a bit now, there seem to be less adverts and definitely less chat. Better mix of music too

Will try some of the recommendations here.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 28/05/2023 09:13

Agree with @Gtsr443 about Simon Mayo's album show on Greatest Hits (Sunday lunchtimes). Lots of stuff on there that you rarely hear on the radio. I tend to switch between GH, Absolute and a bit of R2 depending who's on.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2023 09:23

I like Simon Mayo’s album show too. And I like Ken. But the music can be a bit repetitive. Every time I got in the car last week they were playing ‘Summer of 69’.
Not as bad as Smooth though which DH used to have on in the car - a constant loop of Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and The Commodores.

PermanentTemporary · 28/05/2023 09:27

Honestly don't rule out Radio 1. I don't know any of the djs and have to switch over if they start talking but the music is better.

Radio 3 in the day can be a lot of fun too. Locally I will listen to Jack FM at times but switch whenever they get one of those breathy male dirge singers.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2023 12:03

DS always switches to R6 if he’s in the car with me and I often enjoy it.

HoleyShit · 28/05/2023 12:28

I paid for the premium subscription on GH radio to get rid of the adverts. I do agree that the music can be a bit repetitive though.

UsingChangeofName · 28/05/2023 15:17

Fantastic, thanks everyone.
This has given me lots of stations to try.
Thanks all.

Simon 'Rossie' Ross 6am-10am on Greatest Hits Radio, best DJ by far.
