Is it quiet where you are? ( nature noise not included! )

I’m in Scotland and live in a new build estate with houses everywhere. The neighbours behind us are almost constantly in their garden, which is fine, but the noise of their loud voices can be relentless as well as their dog barking for long periods of time. . I don’t mind birds or natural noises ( although I don’t like dogs barking ). It makes me not use my back garden much.

I’ve always said to myself that one day when the kids grow up, I’ll move somewhere quiet. My question is, is that realistic or will there always be the sound of people or cars if you’ve not the money to buy an island or huge estate! Even when I’ve been on holiday on a Hebridean island in a cottage, I could often hear dogs barking.

I'm sitting out. Can hear the birds and the water gurgling in the pond.....and someone using a power drill and the kids football team.over in the park shrieking!

We’re in an older neighbourhood on the edge of a Scottish city and it’s quiet now (there were lawn mowers etc earlier). I think the difference is all the gardens here are mature. We’re enclosed by plants and they really absorb noise. I’d highly recommend lots and lots of planting.

Peanutbutteryday · 26/05/2023 19:33

We are in London. It’s never quiet. Don’t move here!

Zippedydoo123 · 26/05/2023 19:34

No it is a lovely silent neighbourhood. Everybody comments how peaceful it is when they visit.

It is just my noisy 18 yr old ds that gives me endless noise as he is in between jobs and full of life!

Sunmachine · 26/05/2023 19:37

Edge of a large village, quite rural, peaceful apart from next doors fecking rat dog 😫Not much you can do to prevent selfish people moving next door unfortunately

Lockheart · 26/05/2023 19:37

It is now but I left London earlier today. Now in a small village. All I can hear is the birds and someone doing some mowing in the distance. It's bliss.

But come Monday it will be back to the endless traffic noise, people shouting, and smog.

MinimalistMe · 26/05/2023 19:37

I live very rurally, on top of a hill with nothing around but fields. The silence is immense, and beautiful.
I hope you get to experience it one day if that's what you want ☺️

Justcashnosweets · 26/05/2023 19:37

I live in a village in south west Scotland. Its really quiet, pretty much all the time. We were out today for a couple of hours and it was bliss. The sun was shining and the only sounds were the birds, sheep, and kids playing. 🥰

illiterato · 26/05/2023 19:38

This time of day it’s super quiet. In the day it’s a cacophony of leaf blowers and construction- everyone seems to be constantly renovating/ rebuilding. it’s quiet because there are a lot of holiday homes and not many kids. You do get the odd week in the summer where some air bnb arseholes are being arseholes but it’s fairly rare. Seems mainly families on holiday.

IhearyouClemFandango · 26/05/2023 19:38

Yes, pretty much. Birds, DS's program, the occasional passing car. We are probably the noisiest here.

Sulusu · 26/05/2023 19:39

I work from home, and most of the week from 8 am to 4 it's really quiet apart from some dogs barking or odd car going past. It's blissful.

During summer it's bedlam on the weekends and evenings. Non stop kids shrieking, footballs thudding, endless DIY and neighbours playing music.

I don't spend much time at all outside on summer weekends as it drives me batty. I'm honestly relieved in winter as it's not such an issue.
When I retire I am definitely moving somewhere quieter!

Lockheart · 26/05/2023 19:40

Oh I'd like to add one more thing I can hear - out resident thrush bashing snails on the patio!

Cloverforever · 26/05/2023 19:41

Quiet here in my rural village estate. Just the birds tweeting and the occasional car setting off or arriving home. Probably why hardly anybody moves from here!

BlameItOnTheGoose · 26/05/2023 19:41

I'm here in a remote corner of a huge rural estate. There is just one (quiet) neighbour sort of nearby, so other than nature sounds (and the odd aircraft) it's really peaceful and silent here! A welcome change from central London where we used to be.

Serena73 · 26/05/2023 19:42

I can hear lots of birds and it would be really peaceful if not for the constant sound of balls game next door! I don't mind that though, but you probably wouldn't like it! I suppose you can never guarantee quietness unless you don't have close neighbours.

thewonderfulthingabouttigger · 26/05/2023 19:42

I live on a road with lots of other houses but we are in a rural village. You can hear cars go past from time to time but you can always hear the birds singing and people saying morning/afternoon to others as they walk past with dogs. It's beautifully quiet here. I adore it. You don't need mega bucks to live here. Down the road there are two up two down Victorian style houses that go for about £220k

OldTinHat · 26/05/2023 19:42

I'm in a terraced house in the centre of a county town. Absolutely silent here.

EatingWormsMichael · 26/05/2023 19:42

I get spells of lovely peacefulness. However one neighbour does cars up as a hobby so sometimes there is relentless revving. The neighbours at the back are absolute trash who sit smoking weed and burping, occasionally yelling at someone - I hate it when they sit out.

Bigglebiggle · 26/05/2023 19:43

Live on the edge of a village, house backs onto fields. It's lovely and quiet and I can sit out all day and the only noise I will hear is the birds. However, on the flip sode with that, makes me feel guilty if I'm out with the children, I'm constantly shushing them.

MintJulia · 26/05/2023 19:44

We have fields behind and woodland in front. One neighbour. No drunks or DIY drills but it certainly isn't quiet.

Muntjac barking, foxes screaming, owls hooting, next door's cockerel. 😂

doitwithlove · 26/05/2023 19:45

I can hear my clock ticking, neighbours have gone out. It's lovely & peaceful

HeyMicky · 26/05/2023 19:45

Birds, a distant train, one halfwit on a motorcycle on the bypass but very faintly. DH is playing some music in the garden as he cleans up but softly - I stood in the lane to see how far it carried. We'll probably hear a few people from the pub at kicking our time but that's it. Small village in Bucks

PurBal · 26/05/2023 19:46

Semi detached in a cul de sac (8 houses) backing onto fields. Much quieter than my parents house on a 13 house cul de sac (mostly detached houses). I think it depends on neighbours, we’re the only family and most are retired. My parents have more children in the neighbourhood.

Davestwattymissus · 26/05/2023 19:47

This is weird i was literally thinking about this a minute ago! Also on a new build estate. Its lovely out but I've shut the windows because of kids screaming outside, and my NDNs honky foghorn voice doing my head in as she's having a bbq.

Like a PP I look forward to rainy days and although I love the hot weather I kind of wish it away for the peace of the winter.

I dream of a house with a bit of land and no neighbours for at least half a mile.

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 26/05/2023 19:48

I've got the M25 quite close. When the wind blows from that way it's really loud. It's constant so fairly easy to ignore mostly.
