Is it quiet where you are? ( nature noise not included! )

I’m in Scotland and live in a new build estate with houses everywhere. The neighbours behind us are almost constantly in their garden, which is fine, but the noise of their loud voices can be relentless as well as their dog barking for long periods of time. . I don’t mind birds or natural noises ( although I don’t like dogs barking ). It makes me not use my back garden much.

I’ve always said to myself that one day when the kids grow up, I’ll move somewhere quiet. My question is, is that realistic or will there always be the sound of people or cars if you’ve not the money to buy an island or huge estate! Even when I’ve been on holiday on a Hebridean island in a cottage, I could often hear dogs barking.

No, there’s a load of houses being built behind us, on land we used to watch deer and birds of prey on. It’s been going on for 2 flaming years now. There’s extra traffic now, non stop dogs barking, and we’re near the local airport which never seems to close as I hear planes going over at all hours of the day and night.

I live in a coastal town. Our street is in a very low traffic neighbourhood. It’s generally quiet, except for a house nearby that likes to play their (crappy) music in the garden till the early hours of the morning, usually on a Friday night or bank hol. It must be exceptionally loud as its from the street in front of us and we can hear everything. The police have been called before, but they just stop for a few weeks, then do it again😵‍💫

Other than that, we get the odd drunk person singing/ talking loudly on the way back from the pub on a sat night. Oh, and loud seagulls screeching.

mumonthehill · 26/05/2023 19:52

No neighbours at all and a very rural single track road outside the house. Very quiet, birds is all i hear. I love it in the evening when the owl starts, you can hear it so clearly. On a very still day I can sometimes hear the children from the village school a mile away playing at lunchtime.

StayingZenInTheVipersDen · 26/05/2023 19:55

We have some pretty obnoxious neighbours on one side. They host a lot and used to be so noisy and unbearable to listen to. I avoid my garden all summer tbh. But they've had people over twice recently and actually been quiet. I don't know what's happened, but expect my braver / feistier neighbour has had words!

So yes, it's lovely and quiet today and I can't believe my luck. Long may it continue!

Atishoos · 26/05/2023 19:57

So so quiet here, but then again I have just removed my super duper hearing aids lol!

In general though it is an older neighbourhood with lots of retired people like me and few children really. Cul de sac to the front and huge park/playing fields to the back, uninterrupted view of the hills. But when you live here all the time you don't see it, it becomes your ordinary landscape. I'm very lucky I know (touch wood), but you never know when a neighbour will up sticks and who knows who will move in then! Current neighbours great, do a little DIY now and then but man is a joiner/carpenter and has done me a few good turns with the fence and bits and bobs.

Oh and there are no dogs either, which is a blessing from a barking POV, but I love to see them out in the park, if they behave themselves!

Mycatsbigtoe · 26/05/2023 19:58

I’m exactly the same! I prefer winter too as it’s quieter. Unfortunately when you move to a new build estate, it’ll be mostly families, like us and barky dogs. My kids and partner love it, so it’s just me really! Hoping one I’ll get to my happy place.

If my kids weren’t here it would be dead silent. We have the valley all to ourselves.

AlltheFs · 26/05/2023 20:00

We live in a very pretty village, lots of open countryside. It is very quiet if you ignore:

-birds
-sheep
-foxes
-my hens demanding blueberries with menaces
-the builders doing an extension down the road (to be fair that is temporary)
-tractors and other rattly farm equipment
-my 3 year old
-the children next door
-occasional sound of garden equipment, mowers and strimmers etc

We get a few dog barks but nothing persistent or that I ever notice.

I have lived in a very isolated gamekeepers cottage before, our nearest neighbours were 1.5 miles away. Now that was quiet apart from pheasants and harvest noise. We rarely heard any human generated noise.

Kyse23 · 26/05/2023 20:01

No. Neighbours next side have their grandchildren over every day in summer, screaming and shrieking. I don't use my garden as I can't tolerate the noise or earplugs and if I'm working, windows have to be shut or people on the phone complain

Not objecting to playing noise but endless screaming is painful

Highfivemum · 26/05/2023 20:02

My house is quiet and hear nothing except birds which is lovely. My DB house was the same but sadly he has had a new neighbour move in who is a childminder with around 25 kids 😳 it has changed his house and garden in an instance. It’s all down to neighbours I suppose

CrumbliestCrumble · 26/05/2023 20:05

My dcs are screaming and shouting in the garden playing football.
But ndn is out and the ones over the back are the most antisocial, noisy, party going people so sod it the kids can make as much noise as they wish.

WildFlowerBees · 26/05/2023 20:06

Not very quiet here until the neighbours kids go to bed and she has finished yelling about the house. When I go back to see my dad I love the peace of the garden. We sit and watch the birds and enjoy listening to nothing. I can't wait until we can move to somewhere more quiet.

TeamSleep · 26/05/2023 20:09

It’s lovely and peaceful where we live… except for us! My kids are currently outside playing very loudly! We’re surrounded by houses occupied by older retired people, every evening I’m sure they’re counting down the minutes until we put them to bed!

Spectre8 · 26/05/2023 20:09

I go sit out in my garden at 6am to 8am...peaceful, can hest the birds and just no real noise like the odd at or two passing.

Its blissful.

After 8am the neighbours come out and its earsplittinf conversations, they must only be less than a metre from each other but insist on shouting. This ai then copied by their 4yr old...argh!! Not to mention they have speakerphone conversations too.

I dont give a fuck about what they are having or doing all day and even with my headphone volume maxed out it doesn't drown out their noise...imagine how loud that is that my volume is at max and its not enough!

If that's not bad enough they slam their doors everytime. God forbid they just be normal and close them so they don't bang loudly.

They are just obnoxious, rude, narcisstic arseholes. They think everyone needs to hear their noise and what's going on in their lives...when infact noone gives a crap.

It was amazing when they were away on holiday, wish they would go on holiday permanently.

So they seem to have a routine when they go out in the garden...I just go out in mine around it do I can enjoy it without wearing headphones on full blast which will damage my ears.

We are in London. It’s never quiet. Don’t move here!

I'm also in London but background city noise doesn't bother me because it's just other people going about their daily business, as I do. Even police helicopters, general traffic, sirens, etc. don't upset my equilibrium!

I am however irritated by dogs barking late at night when they're being walked around midnight, food deliveries at 3am as the scooters rev up and down the street looking for the right address, and people letting off fireworks for no apparent reason at midnight. The selfishness of some people is what I find annoying!

CatsOnTheChair · 26/05/2023 20:29

20 year old estate here.
Opposite have stopped tinkering with the motorbike so just birds and DS washing up right now.
The train is due through in 10 mins tho. All the windows are open, so I'll probably hear that.

midsomermurderess · 26/05/2023 20:33

The front of my flat is on a busy road and I don’t have double glazing. Sometimes the ambulance and police sirens make me think it’s like living in the Bronx (in the 1970s, probably gentrified now).

midsomermurderess · 26/05/2023 20:35

And, at certain times the area is beset by leaf blowers. If I was Queen of the World, I would outlaw them.

Truestorypeeps · 26/05/2023 20:35

We are in a cul de sac of around 20 semi detached houses and bungalows at the edge of a larger housing estate. it's nearly always quiet. A few children at the front and back at times. Right now all I can hear while I'm sat out the back is birds chirping. We've been lucky to have quiet respectful neighbours but next door is up for sale so we'll see if that continues...

CeeceeBloomingdale · 26/05/2023 20:36

Really quiet. I can normally only hear birds and the trees rustling. Can't hear any traffic unless it's outside my door. Next doors's dog barks if anyone is around. We live right on the outskirts of a smallish town so there isn't much to hear.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/05/2023 20:39

Neighbours have their patio doors open and I can hear their TV, I can hear children playing on the street, I can hear a family chatting, further off I can hear music. It's fine, I live on a housing estate, I like being around other people. I'd get the heebee jeebees when it's too quite, it feels foreboding.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 26/05/2023 20:50

HeyMicky · Today 19:45
Birds, a distant train, one halfwit on a motorcycle on the bypass but very faintly. DH is playing some music in the garden as he cleans up but softly - I stood in the lane to see how far it carried. We'll probably hear a few people from the pub at kicking our time but that's it. Small village in Bucks

@HeyMicky think you’re possibly not a million miles away from me! We’re not in a village but faintly hear bikes on the bypass.

cryinglaughing · 26/05/2023 20:53

I am a couple of miles from the nearest town but live surrounded by fields, closest neighbour is about 0.25 miles away.
Only thing I can hear are curlews and swallows at the moment.

VioletCharlotte · 26/05/2023 20:54

There always seems to be noise where I live. I sat out in the garden for a bit earlier but came back in because of the noise from someone's jet wash and next door's teenager yelling while gaming. I live in the middle of an estate so noise is to be expected. I'd like to live somewhere quieter one day.

Tulipvase · 26/05/2023 20:55

I live on a main road in a small town. There is pretty much constant traffic which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the morons and their pop pop cars.

Part of me would love to live very rurally but at the moment it’s not practical. I have 3 teens and being able to walk to town via the lovely park and back roads is pretty useful. Equally when I’m older, being close to shops and the GP (hah) will be useful too. It’s a conundrum.
