Is it quiet where you are? ( nature noise not included! )

I’m in Scotland and live in a new build estate with houses everywhere. The neighbours behind us are almost constantly in their garden, which is fine, but the noise of their loud voices can be relentless as well as their dog barking for long periods of time. . I don’t mind birds or natural noises ( although I don’t like dogs barking ). It makes me not use my back garden much.

I’ve always said to myself that one day when the kids grow up, I’ll move somewhere quiet. My question is, is that realistic or will there always be the sound of people or cars if you’ve not the money to buy an island or huge estate! Even when I’ve been on holiday on a Hebridean island in a cottage, I could often hear dogs barking.

I live in a quiet housing estate with fields nearby. Lots of bird song, a few cars slowly passing from time to time, neighbours chatting if they pass each other. Much as I like peace and quiet I do still like to feel connected. On school days you can hear the sound of children in the playground at break time but it's far enough away to be pleasant and not intrusive.

Pallisers · 26/05/2023 21:01

I'm sitting out in the garden. Up till about an hour ago I could hear them working on the house across the street - gut renovation - so lots of chat and banging etc. the birds are going on and on. I often hear children playing a few houses over. The guy behind me will shout hello if he sees me in the garden. My next door neighbour is a folk singer and sometimes she has a few friends over and they play their guitars and sing some folk songs very softly - I love that.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 26/05/2023 21:04

It's nice to hear that so many of you are enjoying relative peace and quiet! At times like these it's hard to believe there are 70 million people on our tiny shores

Some lovely pictures of places on this thread. Noisy as we as peaceful.

We're a bit of both. London, and near a concentration of restaurants, so lots of people parking up, getting out and laughing and talking. Lots of delivery drivers scooting up and down.
Out the back some kids playing keepy-uppies and someone further down strumming a guitar and singing quietly..
We're above the Picadilly line here, so when I put my head to the pillow I can here it incredibly faintly rushing underneath the house.
Love it here.

I live in a town. Right now I can hear a bird singing and nect doors water feature gurgling.

mondaytosunday · 26/05/2023 21:15

I live in a terrace in London. During the day I hear people and cars in the (residential) street, a lawnmower, the young family next door. At night I mostly hear foxes and occasional person/people comjng home from a night out. The noise is of a reasonable level and wouldn't stop me from sleeping even with windows open. I have dogs but they don't bark much. I rarely hear any other dog. Occasionally a kiddy having a bit of a meltdown. But that's living in London!

MrsJackRackham · 26/05/2023 21:16

Suburban town, I'm in the town centre but on a dead end street. Occasionally hear emergency vehicles going round the one way system at the dead end of the street or a train going past but that's it. It's that quiet I can hear my upstairs neighbour running a bath. Oh and that fucking wood pigeon that haunts me.
It's noisier once the schools break up as my street takes you to a country park and the teens start making their way back into the town centre about 10 but I like watching them 🙂

Rural France....nothing but crickets and champagne corks 😬

elevenplusdilemma · 26/05/2023 21:17

I live in a small village but in a rural location. It's pretty peaceful here.
I rarely hear traffic noise unless a car is entering or leaving our road. Very occasionally we hear a distant police siren on the main road into our village (like once a month). We do hear motorbikes on the same distant road, maybe once an hour on average during the day. A helicopter or two fly past most days. Sometimes we have enormous low-flying military aeroplanes - at night they scare the shit out of me! There's a train line about a mile away and you can hear the trains passing / tooting their horns in the distance.
People noises are generally limited to neighbours having a chat in the street if they bump into each other or kids playing out in gardens on nice days. Nothing too loud.
We are surrounded by fields so at some points in the year you will hear tractors going back and forth all day.
Lots of folk round here have a horse so clip clopping of horse hooves is a common sound. More often than car noise I think.
Other than that it's just animal sounds - cows mooing (moos travel a long way in the dead of night!), sheep baaing, pheasants clucking, peacocks calling (they're noisy buggers), chickens and cockerels calling, songbirds tweeting and cats fighting / dogs barking.

I live on a quiet road in a small town, only a short walk from the middle of nowhere. DH and I love the near-silence.

1984Winston · 26/05/2023 21:49

I live right on the edge of a town, open countryside for miles in front of my house, it's pretty quiet but equally not too quiet (I love it)

Azealeasinbloom · 26/05/2023 21:53

In Scotland, rural town/ village. Very quiet. Just birds at the moment; LOT of crows; occasional fox; next door has a small dog who likes to ‘talk’ to my labs- my two are generally too busy smiling to bark. Other neighbour and wife tend to kick off every so often, but are having a quiet spell thankfully.
interestingly, have a city friend who finds the ‘nature noises ‘ very obtrusive and would prefer cars and sirens - so I guess it what you are used to.
Hope things calm down for you op.

windowopen · 26/05/2023 22:30

Name changed for this. I live in Scotland too. Right beside Murrayfield Stadium. I have the window open and have been listening to Harry Styles singing in my back garden almost.
Brilliant.
The concert has just finished and the revellers are making their way down our street. Hoping no one pees in my garden !

awakeeveeynight · 26/05/2023 22:37

I live in Northumberland and it is so very dark and incredibly quiet. Although we've got an owl on living on our street that is well known to us and the neighbours. The peacefulness is brilliant. Very much love living here.

Motnight · 26/05/2023 22:38

Live in a terrace in London. Can hear overground trains in the distance. Kids in the morning and afternoon (on same road as school), cars (but in no way constant). Neighbours but a murmur if that makes sense. Very lucky that our neighbours are quiet. Birds. Dogs (several houses away). Airplanes.

bryceQ · 26/05/2023 22:40

It's silent where my mum lives on a modern housing estate it looks like privet drive! But I live on a busy London street so not where I am!

OptimisticSix · 26/05/2023 22:45

Nope, currently staying at a relatives under the Heathrow flight path. They are lovely but I could not live here!

Esjolaol1973 · 26/05/2023 22:46

I live in village in SE . Very quiet apart from the odd dog barking. We live on flight path coming into Gatwick so some evenings there are planes coming over every few minutes at about 4000 ft but even that noise is not too loud .

Friend of mine lives at Windsor Castle in the great park …the planes are sooo loud!

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/05/2023 22:50

I live in Jersey right out in the sticks and hear the occasional car or dog barking and that is it. Very quiet, nothing at all now at 11pm

I live on a main road in a small town. There is pretty much constant traffic which wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the morons and their pop pop cars.

Part of me would love to live very rurally but at the moment it’s not practical. I have 3 teens and being able to walk to town via the lovely park and back roads is pretty useful. Equally when I’m older, being close to shops and the GP (hah) will be useful too. It’s a conundrum.

I'm in a very similar position and also live on a main road. I don't really mind the traffic noise other than car horns honking but it took a long time to get used to as I used to live very rurally. Then again being walking distance from shops, cafes, bars, doctors, dentist, theatre etc is extremely useful!

Grumpigal · 26/05/2023 22:52

In fairness I live in a fairly residential area, I wouldn’t call it an estate but it’s an old school layout, classic English suburb but it’s really very quiet.

lots of houses and people but it seems that the type of people who live here are fairly quiet and keep themselves to themselves. There are a good amount of children because we have a very good school close but there’s rarely a lot of noise and if there is it’s only on a weekend day time. Very rarely a late night party in summer.

Im always surprised for where I live, which is fully residential although quite green (lots of walk ways and cycle paths) it’s SO quiet.

I can hear the distant duel carriage way but it’s only a hum, the odd dog bark and then the night birds. We have a local owl, which I love to hear at night.

I do think it’s possible to find pockets of quiet areas in towns and built up villages but it’s probably rare and I do feel lucky!

WhereMyRosemaryGoes · 26/05/2023 22:54

I live in a fairly quiet suburb of a medium-sized city.

I can hear some sort of machine - could be drilling or water blasting? Not too close though.
I can hear birds shouting.
The house is sighing and humming.
Dd is turning the pages of her book.

Yes! In the day the main noise is the rooster next door and all the horses clip clopping up and down the road

For us it was the compromise. I wanted an older house and not on an estate. Ideally, I’d live a road or two back but where I live, that would cost me 100/150k. I can live with it, mostly!
