What do you do?

Please, please no judgment and I’m not asking for any help, just advice.

What do you do when you have no money? And nowhere to turn?
I got paid today, after rent, bills and my cars MOT I have enough for some fuel, that’s it. I can’t afford a food shop, my local community fridge is open on Wednesdays so I’ve missed that.
I can’t get credit and have no one I can ask.

I have name changed but I’m a regular poster.

Do you have kids?
if so I might try asking at their school.
local church?

Can you manage without the car for a bit, do the MOT next month?

I am so sorry you are in this position. It’s shit.

FrogsWormsandCaterpillars · 25/05/2023 13:33

Asking their school is a good idea thank you.
Annoyingly I need the car everyday to get to work and I’ve already paid for it, it’s just ended up needing more than I had budgeted for.

Do you have any money left at all? What’s in your freezer/cupboards?

FrogsWormsandCaterpillars · 25/05/2023 13:44

We have literally eaten everything this week to get to payday. I will have maybe £10 after I’ve got fuel. Which I need to get to work.

You ask school & church

Ring your local food bank & ask who can refer.

Do you have any food at all? I'd do porridge for tea today, buy the cheapest oats & a pint of milk.

Do you receive any benefits?

Sorry you're in this position Flowers - no judgement from me.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/05/2023 13:51

How often do you get paid?

Could you go to a credit union?

wildfirewonder · 25/05/2023 13:53

My work would also allow an advance I think.

CC222 · 25/05/2023 14:18

Have you looked into whether you're entitled to any UC if you're not earning enough? If you are, you can get an upfront loan that you repay from your monthly payments.
Unfortunately that's not the quickest fix, certainly won't be help if you need it today but it's worth looking into if you haven't already.
I hope you manage to sort something out x

Anotherchangeofnameagain · 25/05/2023 14:36

School, churches/religious organisations, job centre, social services - all places that can issue food bank vouchers.

rose69 · 25/05/2023 14:44

Our area has a Mum’s group on Facebook and people always offer help on that and also Next door.

sleepismyhobby · 25/05/2023 14:44

I sell on fb vinted and eBay when I'm really struggling it's a hassle but does let me buy food. I'm a agency nurse and the work has dried up so much

GoldSilverBronzeTan · 25/05/2023 14:46

Quick money making - prolific surveys, Vinted, marketplace, eBay.

olio for free food

Limth · 25/05/2023 14:48

I'd recommend the Olio app and the Too Goo To Go app.

Olio is a bit hit and miss but people give away spare food on there.

TGTG is brilliant. You can pick up a huge bag of shopping for about £5. If you can be creative, you can make it last a good while.

I'm sorry you're in this position, OP. Really shit.

Aintshesweet · 25/05/2023 14:49

as well as the great suggestions already given, I recommend the Citizens Advice Bureau and StepChange

Sorry, OP, I misread your post and thought you had £10 spare. Sorry.

Dacadactyl · 25/05/2023 14:50

Google your local councils name and welfare rights team. They will help you with a food bank referral ASAP...same day.

Patchw0rk · 25/05/2023 14:58

Ask school for a referral to a foodbank. Also if you're on a local Facebook page for your area, and they allow anonymous posts, you could do one asking for any spare food- happens sometimes on ours and people are always happy to help.

toodlesofoodles · 25/05/2023 19:08

Check your local fb groups we have a community cupboard that's filled daily.

Ask school or HV for a food bank referral

Some councils have a crisis loan service, check on entitledto if you're not already getting benefits.

I'm sorry OP, it's horrific to be in this situation. Can you talk to your line manager at work and at least get some emotional support for what you're going through from someone irl?

Absolutely no judgement from me Flowers
