Hi, I’m interested in doing some online courses to improve my skills. I have found some online courses where only the course is free but you have to pay for the certificate.

does anyone know about any free online courses which include a certificate? Thanks so much in advance

Some local colleges such as Solihull College and university centre offer the distance learning courses for free with certificate included but it depends on your postcode and other criteria. Also a company called learning curve provide them too.

There'll be eligibility criteria but these will be free if you meet them and are mainly accredited.

What sort of thing would you like to learn?

There are tons of great courses on Udemy and you get a certificate. They go on sale every few weeks so you can get them for about £12. I've done lots of IT-based ones and have really upskilled.

ISC2 are offering a free Certified in Cybersecurity qualification. Online course material then an exam in a test centre - www.isc2.org/landing/1MCC

I know it's not a topic on your list but only one I know of that has an official certificate

Do you need to live in England for that?

Sorry I don't know, the website is easy to navigate though. Good luck

swanling · 24/05/2023 21:21

That's quite a broad list of topics. What do you want the certificate for?

The OpenLearn free online courses mentioned by a pp are not accredited, you just get a statement of participation.

The certificate is to put on my LinkedIn page and show to employers

Unless they are accredited, the certificates are worthless. Do the courses if they interest you and you want to learn, but I wouldn't pay for a meaningless certificate. When I've recruited for jobs, they are never taken seriously. If it's qualifications you're looking for, check the accreditation before you pay anything. Colleges and universities (especially the Open University) are a good place to start.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 24/05/2023 21:34

Certificates on LinkedIn have limited value if they are not accredited, all they show is that you hit play on a course and waited till the end when a certificate of completion was produced. They don't demonstrate that you understood the content or would be capable of applying it in your job.
It would be more impactful on there to have ex-colleagues provide recommendations or endorse the skills you've listed.

i meant the kind of online courses where you did quizzes at the end of each module and once you had passed everything you got a certificate

An employer would probably be more interested in you being able to tell them (or demonstrate) what you had learned on a course.

You're not in England. What country are you in? People might be able to give more specific advice.

FredaFox · 24/05/2023 22:24

I don't think anybody is interested in looking at certificates for numerous courses, accredited qualifications yes but even then nobody needs to see an actual certificate
Anybody can watch a video and take a quiz

Ilovebountybars · 24/05/2023 22:27

Right. Thank you for the advice

Don't use the the Aim group, I know a few people who had issues and got charged loads of money for their "free" course

Do not enrol on learning curve group courses. Keep away from them. They canceled my course in the middle of my assessments because some of them forgot to verify me correctly. They are not professional and irresponsible.
