About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

I still struggle with the fact that Laugharne is in West Wales, rather than Ireland.

Where? Who now?

Very important knowledge for coeliacs!

Until recently I thought Bognor Regis and Skegness were similar places very close to each other somewhere along the North East coast between Newcastle and Scotland. Neither of them are anywhere near there!!!!

When I was younger I thought Somerset was called Summer Set and that it was either one of the Balearic or Canary islands.

On a different note I recently found out that if you drive more than one car and always forget which side the fuel tank is in the car you're in- there is actually a little arrow on the fuel indicator symbol showing which side it's on I can't believe I'd never noticed it!

Re petrol tank arrow... Me too, me too! It's an absolute game changer. It is so clever my mind is blown!

Just now from a TikTok:

That L'Occitane is pronounced 'loxy-tan' and not 'locky-tan' Blush

I had no idea that Brunei was in Borneo - I had always assumed it was in the Middle East somewhere.

Same here!!!

LT1982 · 27/05/2023 04:05

I totally thought it was in the Middle East too. How on earth is it somewhere else?? Confused

savyer · 27/05/2023 08:16

NB if you're interested, the word l'Occitane means 'the Occitan woman', referring to an old name for the region of southern France around Provence, so-called because they used to speak the language of Oc - hence the current region Languedoc (ie 'language of Oc').

As you were.

LadyEloise1 · 27/05/2023 09:04

Yes I was surprised by the pronunciation of L'Occitane.
In my head I still say Lockytane ( the tane to rhyme with lane/Dane ).
I never thought it was Loxytan until very recently Smile

L'Occitane have finally brought out a body mist in the Almond scent to match their gorgeous Almond shower oil. Yay !

So I will admit to just Googling hamburger and beefburger

According to my research of 1 website, a hamburger can be a beefburger.

Beefburger vs. Hamburger: Is There Any Difference? - Just A Taste (just-a-taste.com)

  • A hamburger or simply burger is a generic term, consisting of a hot sandwich, with a cooked beef/chicken/pork/lamb or vegetarian ground, perfectly arranged in a sliced bun.
  • A beefburger refers to a specific type of burger, made only with beef meat, and seasoned with different kinds of sauces, vegetables, and sometimes cheese.

So a hamburger can be beef / chicken / pork - but then I would call it a chickenburger / vegeburger.

Another one, the smell you get following rain after a dry spell comes from fungus in topsoil.

Yes it was a video on the shower oil (that I'm now going to have to buy) that I was watching when I realised!

I haven't checked, but I assume hamburger means a speciality from Hamburg. Easy to see how the confusion has arisen when the word got borrowed into English!

When JFK said 'Ich bin ein Berliner!' in front of the Berlin Wall, apparently that could be taken as meaning 'I am a doughnut' as well as 'I am a Berliner!'

@savyer Thanks for that, really interesting. Just goes to show how choosing a relatively obscure name for a brand doesn't lead the brand itself into obscurity...it's all in the quality of the product, msrketing etc. I love L'Occitaine and will endeavour to prounounce it correctly 😊

While I'm about it I often wonder why people in the UK, wild generalisation alert, seem incapable of pronouncing 'latte' correctly. 🤷‍♀️ Not being snooty, genuine puzzlement.

@shadowofadoubt Wow what a coincidence and thanks for the link & info. My earliest findings re lemon merchant went back to 1750 ish around East London (& probably originated from their country of origin) but don't know if Spitalfields was even there then, must research!. The family business continued at Spitalfields in the 1800s then die out as the sons took up other jobs and trades. Our forebears probably did know each other, as you say a close knit community. Tough old times.

Wombastic · 27/05/2023 13:23

I have just found out that some people don’t understand “job saboteurs”- the married man trying it on, the bffs who get you drunk and want your secrets that they then share around the office, the offer of drugs or the underage person flirting with you. It’s all a trap.

Your job most likely has a professional code of ethics and these guys want to test Darwin’s evolutionary theories on you. It is survival of the fittest so don’t be caught slipping.

Whatever you do, don’t be doing it at work.

Heyhoitsme · 27/05/2023 13:33

Actually I was taught in a state school near Belfast. We followed a totally English curriculum. Our map showed Northern Ireland only. We were taught English history and geography. I have made up for lost time and have travelled to every part of Ireland.
