About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

It's very common. And it's not wrong, like I said to someone else, it's just using it's original name. It's whatever you grew up with. Like Holland/Netherlands

That was never its original name. You really should do some research. And you were brought up with it because you were surrounded by sectarianism that likes to diminish and undermine the "enemy".

BadNomad · 26/05/2023 16:06

This also isn't true. The only time it was called Southern Ireland was when it was under British rule and it only last for a year or so until everyone sorted their shit out and it then became the Irish Free State and then the Republic of Ireland.

It is true. It was only for two years but it doesn't make it any less of a fact. Nearly everyone in Northern Ireland called it either Southern Ireland or the South. Ireland is the whole island

It was it's original name from 1920 to 1922. It's a fact not sectarianism

The country didn't exist before 1920? It just appeared in a puff of fog in 1920 did it? It was never called Southern Ireland in your lifetime or your parents'. People only call it that to insult. To point out that RC Ireland was once ruled by the protestant Brits. Of course it is sectarian and offensive.

No, that's not what I said, I said when the island split that was what it was called. It's not sectarianism saying my family are Catholics from Donegal. And we've done plenty of research saying I have the same very rare disease Martin McGuiness died from because I am/was related to him

I don't think you should be taking a stance on this, I politely said to be careful as it could cause offence and clearly it has. Joking about not knowing our geography is one thing but labouring the point that it's OK to call a country by it's political name of 100 yrs ago is a different matter.

It's not a stance though. If anyone should be offended it's me

You said that was its original name. Why do you think, out of all the names there has been for Ireland, that is the one you and the people who brought you up use? The one that only exist for only a short period of time, during/after one of the worst periods of time for Ireland and the Irish people at the hands of the British.

Do your family in the WEST know you say they're from "Southern Ireland"? People are telling you that it is offensive, but you don't care. Thankfully, not everyone in Northern Ireland has that kind of attitude towards others.

Yes they do thank you and they have no problem with it but they know it's not done in an offensive way. I never once said it to be offensive and not one person I know sees it as offensive. I'm sorry you do, but I find it offensive the things being said to me, as all I was doing was stating facts,no stance, not an opinion, just facts. I honestly can't believe you ans others have taken it this far

LaMaG · 26/05/2023 16:33

OK let's get back to the trivial. How does one walk into a party like it was a yacht?

Maybe that should tell you something. You can't just go around using whatever words you feel like and think it's fine because you're not trying to be offensive when you use offensive language.

A yacht is pretty swish so maybe like your rich, cool etc. I don't know lol. If I was walking into a yacht I'd probably feel quite powerful 🤣😂

It was never my intention, I'm sorry that you find it offensive

LaMaG · 26/05/2023 16:41

Possibly post coital glow after just shagging an under world spy or the wife of a close friend

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 16:43

It depends on the size of the yacht and whether or not it's yours @LaMaG .

@shadowofadoubt That's really interesting! My gt grandfather was also a fruit broker of lemons around Spitalfields. His forebears were also fruit brokers and merchants.

I did mention this upthread, and my suggestion was ...barefoot.

😃

LadyEloise1 · 26/05/2023 17:06

I live in Ireland and wouldn't refer to it as Southern Ireland.

Amazing! Also, snap, my father and his family were there too. I think they started trading around the late 1890s. Am sure both families would have known each other, it was such a close knit community.
