About 2 days ago I discovered that Skegness isn’t in Scotland 😳 How did I never know this before? Embarrassingly, I’m 38 😂

I've only found out this year that the petrol pump symbol on my speedometer is to highlight which side my fuel tank is on

Been driving 30 years

Up with a teething toddler but am very tempted to waste precious sleep time popping out to see if this is the same on my car!

Stickytoastandhoney · 25/05/2023 00:22

Yes but it’s covered by the cornea and lens.

The lens is behind the pupil not in front of it

Or was that what you meant that it's covered on either side?

You're thinking of Bethnal Green

Or Golders Green

I had no idea that Brunei was in Borneo - I had always assumed it was in the Middle East somewhere.

I believed this for years too. I also thought Singapore was in China.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/05/2023 00:46

Mauritania always sounds to me like it should be in Eastern Europe.

DeoForty · 25/05/2023 00:49

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are cities, not countries.

Verbena17 · 25/05/2023 00:51

Until I was an adult I didn’t know Southport was up north. I assumed it would be in the south…..and I have a degree in geography 😬

Mothership4two · 25/05/2023 00:53

CheshireCat1 · 24/05/2023 21:33

I used to think that a testicle was a type of spider.

Hoping there is an amusing story behind how you discovered that it's not Cheshire Cat:?

Cattenberg · 25/05/2023 00:53

You know the plastic netting which often covers punnets of fruit? Until recently, I’d find a pair of scissors and cut it open. Until the day I saw a colleague open it easily with her bare hands. The amount of time I’ve wasted over the years hunting for scissors. 🤦‍♀️

blueshoes · 25/05/2023 00:59

It is not Grasp the Mettle, it is Grasp the Nettle.

Knotty Ash is a real district of Liverpool … there’s a sign on the M62!

Imagine my surprise when SiL said they were moving to Hollywood.
The Hollywood that is just south of Birmingham.

Yes, this is what I meant.

EpicChaos · 25/05/2023 01:19

More on Pontefract, lol.
We all know about Pontefract cakes but I didn't know until recently, ( thanks to watching a repeat of Portillo's train programme ) that in that old Charlie Chaplin film, where he eats his boot, it was made of licorice from Pontefract.
There is apparently, only one farm that still grows the licorice root there, iirc.
Maybe the poster/s that live there can confirm?

Also, thanks to a repeat of Dine With, i now know that beetroot is an
aphrodisiac :-/

I once asked my mum why God was sometimes called Peter… thanks Peter god/thanks be to god. But I was about 9.

I told my parents I wanted to go to Durham Uni because I like the West Country 😬

Our former neighbour's son when he was young thought it was Gordon Jesus up in heaven instead of God and Jesus. Grin

Tarkan · 25/05/2023 01:44

I recently learned that there's a place in Fife called Newcastle. DH is a bus driver and was showing me various routes and I commented how there were a lot of Fife buses going down to England. He had to tell me about the Fife one which tbh when you think about it definitely makes a lot more sense. Blush

Not quite the same but a new discovery for me -

I was delivered a 'bounty' milkshake yesterday instead of a 'snickers' one (a proper milkshake with ice-cream etc). Initially I was devastated but it's absolutely changed my life. 🤤

Welcome to the dark side 😂

A friend of mine thought as a child that His name was Harold, as the Lord's Prayer included the line 'Harold be Thy name'.

I've probably mentioned this before, but in Infant School, we used sometimes to sing the hymn at Assembly: 'Jesus bids us shine, with a pure clear light/ Like a little candle burning in the night...' I heard it as 'Jesus Spencer's shine, with a pure clear light', etc., and thought that it was an advert for Jesus Spencer's shine, which I thought was some sort of polish that you could buy at Jesus Spencer's shop: presumably a bit like Marks and Spencers but more holy.

Oh holy fuck that's so funny, corpsing here Grin

QueefQueen80s · 24/05/2023 20:22

This is funny to hear as I live in Pontefract. "I'm off down Ponty" said in a dirty Yorkshire accent 🤣

Whenever this comes up on these threads it makes me crave liquorice in general and Pomfret cakes in particular.

If it helps, the lyrics were written very quickly - along the spirit of “ten minute scribble on the back of an envelope”. No one had any idea the song would hang around as long as it did, charity records tended to disappear into obscurity very quickly before Band Aid.

I’m pretty sure both Midge Ure and Bob Geldof have expressed regret that the lyrics weren’t as well considered as they could have been, but a PP is correct, they were intended to point out to those of us in the UK that while we were expecting to indulge in all the usual Christmas traditions, coziness and imagery, things would be vastly different for people in famine conditions at the time. The other big Christmas song that year was “Last Christmas” and the video had George and Andrew on a skiing holiday, lots of snow. It’s entirely possible “No snow in Africa” was a sideways reference to that.

Pretty much this. I think it’s very easy to criticise the song nowadays. Am sure no one at the time would even have thought about it still being around now.

It was written very quickly. There was no internet with immediate access to information (ie for the general public to look up and criticise).

It was a short, sharp decision and it should be viewed as “of its time”. It is vastly different to some of the crap that is put out nowadays with the vast awareness of social media and what creates viral content.

Furries · 25/05/2023 02:36

I don’t use pastry very often. On the very odd occasions over the years when I do, I tend to have been lazy and have bought the ready-rolled sheets.

I have always lined my tray with grease-proof paper, gently unrolled the sheet of pastry and placed it on the tray.

It was only last week that I realised that the sheet it’s rolled in can be used as the base-sheet. I always thought that it was a wax-type paper to stop the pastry from sticking to itself when rolled up in the box. Muppet!

Titbit*

In this context tidbit is correct

My daughter thought one of the reindeers was called Olive. She was so convinced and we couldn't work out why. Turns out 'all of' the other reindeer is where it sprang from 🤣😂🤣

Unfortunately this is not true as I found out to my embarrassment when once using a hire car 😳😂
