Alternative to crisps

I've fallen into a terrible habit of eating packets of crisps of an evening when dd has gone to bed (single, exhausted, overworked, under paid, middle aged - please don't judge me!) but I've finally decided to sort my life out and I am looking for suggestions for something else that I can snack on in the evening that isn't going to add to the ever expanding tummy...

Any suggestions?

I've fallen into a terrible habit of a huge packet of crisps and almost 2 bottles of wine a night so watching for tips! Hate being single and middle aged

Grapes/raspberries?
Sorbet or ice lollies

DustyLee123 · 23/05/2023 21:34

When I want to eat crisps I go for the lower calorie type like Quavers/French Fries.

GeorgeSpeaks · 23/05/2023 21:34

Posh apples straight out of the fridge chopped up.

Stichintime · 23/05/2023 21:34

Crackers?

brendasaysrelax · 23/05/2023 21:35

Rice crackers, rice cakes, breadsticks, or just lower calorie crisps like skips, French fries, quavers, Pom bears.

mondaytosunday · 23/05/2023 21:35

Sugar snap peas. They have the crunch and are a little bit sweet. Yum!

Frozen grapes, apple slices,
edamame. Fruit tea. Keto diet which stops cravings and makes everything else easier

BCBird · 23/05/2023 21:38

Like the idea of the sugar snap peas

fidgetcube · 23/05/2023 21:38

I eat popped chips. Lower calories than crisps and still good.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 23/05/2023 21:38

I'm also in this camp.

Alternatives that I enjoy include:

  • crudités & dip
  • breadsticks & hummus
  • popcorn
  • salty pistachios
  • sauscisson
  • olives
  • cheese & crackers

These things are all really salty tho. So maybe not great alternatives really.

Lcb123 · 23/05/2023 21:39

Crackers, apple or celery, unprocessed nuts.

Someone once suggested trying a craft hobby that used both your hands - she suggested cross stitch but you could try something else.

It is a bit of a pavlovian response - I eat a bag of crisps as soon as DH walks out the door 😋so a change in routine might help.

MissDynamite23 · 23/05/2023 21:40

Salt and vinegar rice cakes or a small bag of sweet and salty popcorn are my current go to if I need a snack.

In all honesty, I try really hard not to snack in the evenings. I have a piece of chocolate and a peppermint tea and that generally helps me not to carry on eating.

georgetheblob · 23/05/2023 21:41

Oooh I do like chickpeas! Forgot to add, strapped for time and energy as well.

Basically I crave salt. I used to just eat dry roasted peanuts and figured crisps were less fattening, which is stupid. Ugh. Sugar snap peas might work....

Reduced fat hummus on Nairns' cheese oatcakes. Tasty, not too dissimilar to crisps yet with protein and quite low GI.

Also, might sound counterintuitive but try eating a better lunch? Then you don't get the blood sugar dip when you walk in the door.

Eloradannin2nd · 23/05/2023 21:50

Kallo rice cakes are really nice.

caringcarer · 23/05/2023 21:51

Quavers.

Irridescantshimmmer · 23/05/2023 21:51

☆ Oatcakes with a thinly spread chutney or salsa
☆ Bread sticks
☆ Rice cakes
☆ Melba toast

Rummikub · 23/05/2023 21:51

i do this after dd goes to bed. I don’t drink or smoke so don’t think it’s too bad... is it?

Rummikub · 23/05/2023 21:52

Did try melba toast and I did enjoy them.

Flangeosaurus · 23/05/2023 21:53

Salt and vinegar rice cakes with reduced fat cream cheese are great! Little bit of protein helps fill you up as well.

Treacletoots · 23/05/2023 21:53

Second the chickpeas. I roast them in the air fryer until they're crispy and sprinkle with whatever seasoning I'm fancying. Tandoori, chilli, salted etc. Really good.

Cookerhood · 23/05/2023 21:53

Bread sticks are surprisingly high in calories - I think something like 2 or 3 are equivalent to a packet of crisps
