Drivers licence renewal

Forgot about this until I needed a check code and it’s expired last week. Bollocks. Sent a paper copy of form to DVLA, I had a Google and it seems if the dvla have your completed application then you can drive on an expired licence. I sent it special delivery so I can track exactly when it’s delivered tomorrow morning to DVLA.

I suppose I have several questions.

Can I drive with an expired licence if DVLA have my completed form?
Would this effect my insurance?
Would this affect my works insurance?
How long does it take to get a licence back?
Will I be able to get a check code before my licence comes back , once the application is processed but before it’s printed for example?

Can I ask why you did a paper copy and not online?

I think it's only when DVLA are actually processing your correct, confirmed, application you are covered not when it turns up in the post room

i know doesn’t help you now but when I did mine at the post office they confirmed it was being processed and gave me a bar code to show if I got pulled over

My passport has expired. I haven’t been anywhere in years. I went to a post office that said they did digital applications. Which didn’t when I got there and the nearest place that does was another city 40 miles away that I wouldn’t of gotten to before close of business.

It did say on the government guidance that you can drive under s88 when the DVLA receive your application.

i would be wary though, especially if work insurance/driving involved in driving before they confirm they are processing your renewal

what if you've put a full stop in the wrong place (we know how precise these applications have to be) and they reject it and send it back to you?
