Piano advice

My DD is about to sit her grade 1 piano exam. She is 9 and began lessons just over a year ago, layer than hoped due to Covid etc.

Currently she has an electronic keyboard and plays it a lot, both for music practice and to make up her own tunes. She has been able to play songs by ear since she got the keyboard aged 5.

She can play almost anything by ear and her music tutor has had a hard time getting her to understand that learning by heart is not the way to go in music it is just as important to learn the notes. Though in every other way she says she is very talented musically. I am NOT so am struggling to know what to do as a next step

Anyway, we are planning on upgrading the £80 keyboard to something better but don't know if this should be a second hand piano or a weighted keyboard. I am lucky that I have a very musical friend who will guide me on which 2nd hand piano to buy, buy I want to be sure I want to go down that route before I drag her into it all and wonder of a better keyboard would be more suitable.

Thanks if anyone can help

A keyboard which mimics a piano would be the best of both worlds.

a piano or a weighted electric piano - not a keyboard. It's an amazing talent to be able to play anything by ear but reading music and learning the traditional way is also very important, if she wants to study music academically or get a music scholarship

Thank you both
As I was typing I was thinking its not a weighted keyboard but I don't know the real words...you've answered them..off for a nosy, I wasn't getting the correct results off google only pretty much what we have now, which isn't what I want.
