What time do you eat your evening meal?

I am intrigued after a conversation with my DP, he has always naturally eaten his main/evening meal quite late (to my mind) compared to myself.

If work/family constraints were not a thing, what time do you think you would naturally feel ready to eat it? I am curious since we all live by such fairly diverse patterns these days compared to the past - I know someone who eats her main/largest meal at 3pm since she starts work at 5pm, although she does revert back to a more typical pattern when not working.

5-6

FelixDoublyDelicious · 22/05/2023 16:28

Any time between 20:30 and 22:30

It was actually 00:30 due to a late work night recently

I think most of us are "ready to eat" at the time we normally eat - your body gets used to it.

If I weren't at work, and weren't compromising with other people, I would choose to eat a main meal at lunch time / middle of the day.

When we had family at home, and people were always going out to Scouts / sports / music etc, then 5.45 / 6 worked for us, but now there is less pressure on people needing to go out early, we tend to eat about 6.45 - 7.30 (though I AM starving if not eaten by 7)

sherbertyellowteddy · 22/05/2023 16:30

Between 5/5.30
Young children, I'm still at home with the youngest ones, husband starts early and finishes for 4 in a manual job. Left any later and everyone is starving.
I couldn't eat well into the evening I go to bed at 9!

Paperlate · 22/05/2023 16:31

Between 6 and 7. Sometimes earlier depending on how hungry we are.

ShakeYourFeathers · 22/05/2023 16:32

During the week 6-6:30
Weekends 20:00 -21:30 bit too late if I'm being honest especially in a Friday but hey Ho

YouNeverSeeTheRealMe · 22/05/2023 16:32

6ish. there are only 2 of us, no kids now.

AgneathaTheCat · 22/05/2023 16:35

I too wfh but am naturally hungrier in the evening than in the morning/daytime. Always have been. I work late in the evening too, by choice, so need my brain power to last, I suppose, hence the later, larger meal. I don't think I've ever done breakfast unless I have been in a hotel, etc.

It's interesting to see how different we all are, yet also how similar. I do agree that we get used to a pattern.

Ideally main meal at 1pm and then something light at about 5-5.30.
If we go out in the evening I will adjust around it.
I'd hate to be cooking and washing up at 8 or 9pm.

We have gradually moved from about 6 ish to 7-7.30 as DS has got older, and so we are back to the time we ate pre DC.

I'm curious, those of you who eat at 6pm or earlier - do you ever eat out in the evenings? What about with friends who eat later? How does that work? We have family in southern Europe and it's very normal to eat after 9pm there.

I eat at 6pm, would eat earlier if I could but DH moans ever so much.

He says 'oh but they eat much later in Spain and the rest if Europe why do we have to eat so early'.. .BUT we're not in Spain are we, we're in the UK where for the majority of the year it's dark by 5pm and freezing cold and we're not having alfresco tapas we're having hearty casseroles which i want to give time to digest before I go to bed at 9:30pm!

It's very rare that we go out for food but if I did and it was later then I would probably I eat something substantial around 4pm.

TabithaBraithwaite · 22/05/2023 16:41

5:45 up
9:50 breakfast
12 lunch
3:30 snack
5:30 dinner
7 supper
10 bed

When we eat out we tend to get a nice early table! I do sometimes wish we could eat later but neither of us can stomach it. Even though we go to bed around 11-12 we can’t sleep and feel very nauseous. It’s v annoying when abroad!

I have mine either at 5.30 with the kids or at 7.30 ish with dh.

if I had no kids or dh then 7 ish would be my preferred time.

GoodVibesHere · 22/05/2023 16:44

Mañanarama · 22/05/2023 16:16

About 6pm as we all eat together. I don’t sleep well if I have a big meal too late (and also find I put more weight on)

If I’m going out for food 7:30 is about my cut off, otherwise I need a mini tea before I go out.

Exactly this

Snugglemonkey · 22/05/2023 16:50
  1. Well, we aim for 6. There is some deviation for the children's activities but we all eat together every night.
PetitPorpoise · 22/05/2023 16:51

Before we hand children, it was usually about 7-7.30pm.

Now it's 6pm sharp.

SirChenjins · 22/05/2023 16:53

Around 6.30, later at the weekends. 6.30 means we’re finished around 7, kitchen tidied and dishwasher on for 7.30, dog walked, back home around 8.30, bed for me around 10. My life is just one big exciting whirl.

MirandaWest · 22/05/2023 16:53

Depends on what’s going on. I can eat any time really but probably my ideal time would be between 7 and 8

mrsbyers · 22/05/2023 16:54

Between 6 and 7 depending how time consuming the meal prep and cooking is

TropicalMoon · 22/05/2023 16:55

Usually between 5.30- 6.30pm.
I’d be starving if any later and our 3 year old dd eats with us. We are early birds though and usually in bed by 9.30/10pm.

Herbiebanannas · 22/05/2023 16:58

I only eat once a day really.

Normally about 21:00 if we cook and nearer 22:00 if we order in which is about. 50/50 split.

Up at 06:00, work 08:00 to 16:00 ish.

familyissues12345 · 22/05/2023 17:00

Usually around 7pm, maybe a bit earlier if DH is WFH

thaegumathteth · 22/05/2023 17:02

I'd choose to eat about 7ish.

Growing up we ate at 530 and now 90% of the time it's between 6-7 due to clubs etc.

User1786 · 22/05/2023 17:04

Up at 700 with a coffee
Coffee and croissant type thing at 1000
Sandwich for lunch at 1300
Maybe fruit snack at 1600 if exercising later
Dinner 2000 ish depending on evening commitments
Bed 0000
Never really hungry in the morning probably because I eat later. I hate big meals in the daytime as I feel lethargic after so I don’t like a main meal until everything is done and I can relax.
