Where are all the fresh apricots?

I picked up some gorgeous fresh apricots from my local market last week that I can't normally go to because of the timing (mid-week). Since then I've tried to get more in the supermarkets but it seems like they don't sell them, is that right? I've never looked for them before so it's only just dawning on me.

As an aside, I then looked at the tinned ones and was absolutely horrified to see they were about 1.30 or more per can, about the same price as I paid as fresh! I don't ever buy tinned fruit so I had no idea! I take it hard up pensioners won't be snacking on tinned apricots anymore, then? 🙃

It’s the sort of thing that farmers markets and farm shops would do in season, supermarkets will stock things that will definitely sell so go for safe options like strawberries etc and only some seasonal items.

Unless you're in N Africa somewhere I'd say it's very early for soft tree fruit in Northern Europe. So they'll have travelled a hell of a long way. Maybe not so fresh.

Even in France where they are locally grown we wouldn’t see them until June.
i get the feeling that a lot of things are later this year, but when they do come, they are good ( large, firm etc).

I bought some in Sainsbury’s last week 🙂

TooOldForThisNonsense · 22/05/2023 10:07

Lidl had some on Saturday

Bit early I think OP - and for domestic ones the weather has been a bit bleurgh this May.
I'd love a bloody great orchard crammed with nothing but plums and cherries and apricots and peaches.

Florissante · 22/05/2023 10:29

And nectarines and figs.

fitflopqueen · 22/05/2023 10:35

Aldi, bought some on Friday, really nice and ripe.

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/05/2023 10:35

Wait til June /July OP and then you won't be able to move for fresh apricots

Chellybelle · 22/05/2023 10:54
