I don’t even know how to ask this!

I’m totally hopeless at directions and I need to do a walk through a forest and then find my way back. Is there a way to get google maps to hold on to my start point somehow so I can use it to find my way back??

That's a good question, I always think native trees = woodland and coniferous which are usual a managed plantation = forest.

I thought it was based on size. A forest is a big wood.

But I'm not sure about using Google Maps to navigate through a forest, it doesn't show all the footpaths, you might be OK if the path is visible from space, but you don't have to go far off track to be trekking through fairly difficult terrain (uneven ground, thick bushes, fallen trees etc).

OS maps is much better, I think you can get a free trial. Other people recommend All Trails, but I've never used it.

@BarbaraofSeville I think you are correct, I just did a Google and tithe Woodland Trust say that forests are typically areas large enough to support species such as wolves and deer and encompass other habitats such as heaths and grassland.

Oooh Strava is a good one! Thank you everyone. It’s the New Forest so I’m assuming it’s a forest, and I need to do the walk to get to and from a pub to find my airbnb again 😁

Most of the New Forest is heathland so you should be fine. There are also plenty of roads!

@AnnieSaxophone

Sorry, it'll be harder to get lost in the New Forest than finding your way Grin

Lovely area but very, very easy to get around.
