I have just tried to sell an item on FB within 34 hours I was targeted with a sophisticated scam - never again

You have to tell us what happened!

mauveiscurious · 21/05/2023 10:54

Agreed price asked for details on condition Anyvan collection for tomorrow, Passed on name, email and address 🙄and email arrived for AnyVan confirming collection.

Super straightforward however the buyer is paying me an extra £30 for the item. I just need to pay the extra £30 to secure the transaction.

All the time the "buyer" is online pushing that I have the email, have I got it, can I pay

Contacted Anyvan with the screenshot of the email address and email and confirmed complete scam. Never again on FB

Thank you so much for the heads up, I just fended off a very similar would be buyer suggesting ANYVAN pick up 🤞🙂

Thank you, I've literally just done the same thing, honestly if it doesn't feel right then trust your gut. Haven't had an email yet but will just delete if it comes through

My person was going to send UPS to collect and the “insurance” money would be paid back as cash in the envelope.
all the clues were there; odd first name, photo of a senior woman (yes I’m selling bike clamps for the back of a pick up truck) and poor sentence structure.
he/she did get my info but nothing untoward has happened.
I switched to offering to deliver…

I would be really wary of a lot of commerce on FB or similar social media. Instagram has a notorious reputation for scams leading to people being out of pocket. Though a lot of the time it's because people paid by bank transfer, which you must never do given it has zero protections as if one handed a wad of notes to a stranger and let them walk away.

MamaMuse · 09/07/2023 06:59

Yep, same thing just happened to me. Total waste of time!
As soon as the "email" came through it was so obviously a scam. Font all weird, stock images, Gmail account for AnyVan that was completely off and the needing to pay for insurance. Also the whole threat of "if you don't pay and cancel they can file a complaint with AnyTime Tracking Police" 🙄Immediately reported on FB and blocked.
What really is troublesome is that whoever this is, now has my actual address which does make me a bit uneasy 😣lesson learned!

Thanks! I just joined Mumsnet to say thank you. I posted a thank you on the other thread, but yours was the first thing that came up in Google. I've reported them and blocked them. It didn't seem right at all. "I want to pick it up now, but I'm at work, so I'll send an AnyVan man." Great that you posted this!!

I sell all the time on Facebook Marketplace and have had every attempt at a scam going. There is a report function but Facebook is useless as removing them.

I just make it clear on my advert that items are collection only, paid for with cash. I've heard of people otherwise turning up, asking to pay via a Google wallet or Apple pay and showing a fake paid screen. So it was only for me.

I've had so many still ask for me to send and they'll organise a courier, I just instantly block them. Anyone who messes around or asks to pay by transfer or anything other than cash on collection at my door, even those who don't turn up and give some bullshit excuse, block, block and block because elsewise I got repeat time wasters so they can get in the bin.

I wouldn't be put off down to one moron.

Trying to sell a sofa and just had message stating they would send anyvan postman. I'm glad I read this thread straight after as not heard of any van postman so did a Google search.

Hi
did switching to deliver stop the scammers messaging?
I have had 2 today after listing a product I need to sell, one the AnyVan one which thanks to these posts I didn’t continue with so thank you all! And another asking to bank transfer via email which clued me into being a scam once I refused to go any further they left the conversation! So I just wondered if switching to offer delivery weather that stopped scammers messaging please?
thank you 😊

This is my experience too. Polite but firm. You either buy it my way or you don't buy it.

Just googled 'Anyvan and FB marketplace' this morning and this thread came up. Similar to others - 'I'm at work but want it tomorrow, I'll send an anyvan'. He's persistent I will say that for him. I got a 'let me explain' comment after telling him 'sorry, collection in person only'. Someone called Ludovic Grima with a french flag in their profile picture.

@KarenAdam I don't think a zombie thread about scammers is the best place to try to get rid of your furniture 😄
