Do police do anything about attempted car theft?

Tonight, before P went to bed, he went out for a cigarette. When he went into the garden he realised 2 people were sitting in our car. They ran off insistently. Leaving a wallet on the passenger seat. No ID to say who it belonged to. Just a few fuel receipts. The car isn't damaged. Is it worth reporting to the police?

Yes, report it on the non-emergency number. Provide descriptions and accurate timings. Bag & tag the wallet without touching it with your fingers. Check your ring doorbell if you have one, for footage.

On its own, no they won't do anything, but if there has been a series of offences in the area, you may provide them with what they need.

Yes report it. We had a break in, door lock snapped but the dog stopped them coming in. I reported it online as I wanted a crime reference number. The police turned up as there had been a spate of break ins for car keys in the area. They did door to door for door bell footage and took statements so that they could build a case of the crimes the twats had committed.
