When should I expect to feel better after surgery?

Hi, I had major abdominal surgery on Tuesday evening. It was a laparotomy to remove a huge cyst, plus a hysteroscopy. 2.5 hour surgery. I stayed in hospital two nights and have been home since yesterday.

Just wondered if anyone has been through similar and had any advice, or could tell me what their recovery looked like? This is entirely new territory for me, before this I'd never had ANYTHING medical done. Not even a filling!!

I know it's early days for me and I'm probably expecting too much from myself. So far I am able to get myself in and out of bed, to the toilet, up and down the stairs, and I can sit in a chair for short periods of time. But I mostly need to stay in bed. My abdomen is sore and swollen. I've not got much appetite, although DP bless him is trying his best to tempt me with all sorts of yummy food. My bladder is also taking its time to wake up properly. I can go but my gosh is it sloooow.

Also, weirdly, a patch of my outer thigh has gone completely numb! I rang the ward who asked my surgeon, she wasn't concerned and doesn't think it's anything to do with the actual surgery. I'm thinking trapped nerve from laying in bed... But again, just wondering if anyone else has had anything similar?!

When I first started nursing you would have been in hospital for a week after what you have had, then sent home to rest. A general anaesthetic is a strain in the body. Give yourself time.
