.. do you:
A) put it on when you go to bed and leave it wet in the machine until morning?
B) load the machine and set the timer so it finishes at 6am?

We are in a flat and can vvvv occasionally hear neighbours' washing machines, it's extremely quiet, I kept looking for a screen that I thought was making an eeee sound until I realised it was a washing machine.

I am aware of the fire risk but if I didn't run the washing machine overnight/while out it would never get run, so I do it anyway. We have smoke alarms, and I always empty the lint on the dryer.

I do find if it's on in the night, if I'm in a deep sleep cycle it won't wake me up and I sleep through it. It doesn't spin constantly and it is quite "white noise" ish, and the sound fades up and down so I tend to find I can usually fall asleep even if it's going, even if I'm lying there annoyed thinking I should have turned it off, I always fall asleep anyway.

The dryer is a pain because after it finishes it has an anti-crease thing Hmm that makes it do a single spin every few minutes until you turn it off. For HOURS. You can't turn this pointless feature off. No heat, so no fire risk but it does make a noise. Not a loud one but it's sudden and unexpected.

I'm slightly suspicious that the fire risk is not universal to all washing machines/dryers but specifically the ones from the whirlpool brand (and all the brands associated with that group) - the ones that were all recalled a few years ago. Fire brigades have been saying for years that white goods are a problem, what if it's not all white goods, what if it's specifically theirs?

B every single night, as our electricity is less than half the price overnight (12-8) but I am usually asleep long before it starts so I time it to finish after we get up before the cheap rate ends. Means I'm either awake or dozing when it's running so less worry about that.

B. But if I've put it on in the evening and can't be bothered to sort it out before going to bed then it ends up being A. I've never had clothes smell bad from leaving them for 12 hours.

Oh, not clear cut then! I live in a block of flats so my washing machine is three floors down and I wouldn't know if it was leaking whilst in use anyway. I've often put it on in the morning and gone out for the day and not had an issue with smells. I sometimes put it on to finish in the morning so I can hang it when I get up. I did this a couple of days in a row recently and the machine started to smell. Wash in morning, leave til evening; fill in evening and set to finish at 6. It's just that it didn't have a break rather than the washing sitting dirty in the machine overnight?

Sorry I got a bit lost with your last post. Can you explain again which technique caused a smell and which technique didn't? What break?

motherofawhirlwind · 21/05/2023 21:14

A. And if I need something for the morning, OH gets it out at 3am when the dog poops and pops it on a rad.

I set it going before I go to bed on a night so I can hang it out first thing on a morning.
I've never had an issue with the laundry smelling.
