Help! Adult Grammar Classes

Hello everyone,

I really need some advice and recommendations in the area.

Can anyone recommend any grammar classes/books for adults?

I work in a field where my grammar needs to be perfect. I feel like I am failing my clients as I struggle to understand complex syntax, morphology etc. I find it difficult to read books based on general languages- and that's only because I don't understand when they use certain terminology such as 'subject verb agreement, singular verb'. Even when I write posts on Mumsnet, some posters ridicule my grammar and wrongly assume that English is not my native language. It is. English is my first language.

So please please please. It will greatly help if anyone can suggest any good grammar classes (thinking of a teacher level) and /or book. I am desperate!

Some thoughts

Eats, shoots & Leaves (on punctuation but light hearted and good to read)

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation (google this and you’ll find their website that has loads of free exercises too)

Have you also thought about trying a service like grammarly? It’s basically AI-powered writing assistance that will suggest better phrasing or correct grammar and punctuation mistakes for you (basically a much smarter spell check). I know a number of good writers who use it and find it helps them with clarity and quality of their emails etc.

I hope these help

Practical English Usage by Michael Swan is a great reference guide and often one recommended for people taking EFL teaching courses. Obviously a good knowledge of grammar is needed to be able to teach it.
