Tummy bug and vaginal bleeding

Sorry if this is TMI and the wrong place to post but I had a bad tummy bug last week (vomiting and diarrhoea, aches, chills etc)

when the tummy bug symptoms started I also started some light vaginal bleeding which hasn't stopped. It's been going on for a week and half and has started mid cycle. My period is due in 3 days. The bleeding has been fairly light with the odd little clot but not like a typical period.

I thought it might be linked to the tummy bug but maybe it's something else if it's been going on for too long. Is this something worthy going to the GP over?

also, I'm slightly worried it might be implantation bleeding as I had unprotected sex 4 days before the bleeding started but surely implantation bleeding wouldn't happen so soon or happen for so long?!

Any weird discharge or pelvic pain? Vomiting and fever with vaginal bleeding can be symptoms of pelvic infection.

Yamaya · 19/05/2023 09:39

It's not something I've ever experienced or heard about from a stomach bug. I would definitely contact a gp.

Sorry Op but I agree, you could have an infection and it does need to be checked, you don’t want a uterine infection going untreated.
Hopefully it isn’t that, but you need to be seen today.

@WetBandits thanks for this. no discharge other than the bleeding and no pelvic pain either! Fevers stopped too after day one.

im tempted to make a gp appointment but worried I might be wasting time and it'll be put down to one of those things

Eg I had what I thought was a tummy bug but it was actually a kidney infection .

Soltanalot · 19/05/2023 09:41

Sorry, I should have clarified, I'm totally fine now after the stomach bug apart from the bleeding which has continued but I'm not in any pain

I’m a sexual health nurse and would happily see you if you presented with those symptoms 🙂 I think you do need to be seen fairly soon, I would much rather see you and it turn out to be nothing at all, than for you to think “oh I don’t want to waste anyone’s time” and end up very poorly by Monday.

@WetBandits thank you I'll see if I can make an appointment although it's usually a two week wait 😬

Call your local GUM clinic! We can normally wiggle a same day appointment 🙂

Hi, I’ve just had the exact same thing (a stomach bug and then light vaginal bleeding mid-cycle). Did you end up going to the GP? What did you say? Hope it was all ok.

pippabg · 26/02/2024 20:51

Would it be possible to have an update from the people in this thread who experienced this? Happening to me now! 5 days away from my period, but it doesn't normally come this early!

Soltanalot · 26/02/2024 23:09

Hi all! I went to see my gp and he gave me some medication to stop the bleeding and said I should book a follow up if my cycle didn't go back to normal but my cycle did go back to normal so I left it.

I had exactly the same issue when I had a vomiting bug again in September - chills, fever, diarrhoea, vomit etc - I'm assuming the stress caused by the stomach bug caused my period to start early?!

@pippabg do make a gp appointment if you are worried!
