Liberation Day, Guernsey, Jersey and the other Channel Islands, 9 May

Today is Liberation Day in the Channel Islands, marking the anniversary of the end of the German Occupation of the islands in World War 2.

We should not forget that British soil was indeed occupied in the second world war, those who died there, and all that those on the islands went through.

Thanks for the reminder

Wishing all on the islands a great day celebrating. Happy memories of time living there and experiencing Liberation Day, also meeting and hearing the stories of those who lived through the Occupation.

Some terribly sad stories from those years, including the many deportees who died there while working as slave labour, and the persecution of those who tried to help them.

Grateful to our grandparents generation for their sacrifices

My lovely neighbours are proud Norman French Jersey people, went through the Occupation. They were going to raise the flag but didn't want to piss off the Germans opposite. Beats me why, but there you go.

They told me about when the British soldiers landed in Jersey and gave oranges and sweets to the children. Most children had never seen an orange and didn't know they had to be peeled, bit them, then threw them down on the beach with entirely reasonable bleurghh. Apparently they gave them cigarettes too, not so as to put children in bad ways, but as barter.

A celebration day and one for remembering such endurance and sacrifice.

Thank you for posting this, LynTegid
