Classic should i go to A and E thread

Fell over in the mud yesterday and apart from looking like a tit, I put ny arm out to break my fall. I've done something to ny upper arm. Shoulder I think is ok and wrist fine. But anything that involves using or moving upper arm and bicep muscle is really painful. If it stays in the sling it's OK. Slept OK as long as I didn't move upper arm. Nothing visible maybe the beginning of a bruise. A and E?

Ring 111 first and get their advice

Bramblecrumble22 · 08/05/2023 06:11

If you are an olde

Bramblecrumble22 · 08/05/2023 06:11

If you are an older woman, yes. Could be fractured head of humerus.

Is there a minor injuries unit in your area you could go to?
Our local hospital has minor injuries next door to A/E

Ducatifan · 08/05/2023 06:16

Do you have a minor injuries clinic? That’s where I would go. We are Scotland though so not sure if this service is throughout the UK.

Pineda · 08/05/2023 06:21

Yes there is one but it doesn't have an x ray

I'm 57.

I’d ring 111. I did this when I broke my ankle, but wasn’t sure, 24 hours later. It made getting seen by A and E quicker, although now I’d probably be sent to urgent care.

Thanks I'll do this I think.

Something is quite badly wrong- if you imagine your arm bent at the elbow like it's in a sling, I cannot then move it away from my body at all.

I really hope it's not. I do weightlifting and love it 😢😢

If you have a minor injuries or urgent treatment centre I'd go there but does sound like you need to be seen. Nope you feel better soon.

PinkButtercups · 08/05/2023 06:40

Sorry just seen your local one doesn't have an X-ray.

PeanutButterFalcon · 08/05/2023 06:41

I would go to minor injuries before phoning 111. They are a lot faster and can contact our local hospital to arrange an X-ray if they think it’s broken or make any needed referrals. By the time I’ve waited for 111 to phone back I’d be in and out.

Augend23 · 08/05/2023 06:42

Round here you can ring 111 and they book you an appointment for an x-ray at A and E for stuff like that (or a nearby minor injuries with x-ray).

PeanutButterFalcon · 08/05/2023 06:44

Also to add, if you think something is wrong then go to a and e, you know you’ll need an X-ray. Again ours is faster than 111 and once we’ve been triaged for a possible brake they send us straight to x ray before seeing the doctor/HCP.

I fell over in Covid time (in my sixties) and landed on my shoulder. Didn't really think anything broken but it was very painful and hard to sleep. I could not move my arm back past my side as too painful and could not elevate it properly, just a relatively short way. After 2 days I went to A&E as I wanted it x-rayed in case fractured (I still work and need use of both arms!). They sent me through to minor injuries (part of our A&E) and I got an x-ray. Nothing broken but bad shoulder sprain. Nurse specialist said ligaments and muscles had been damaged and made part of collar bone separated from main structure. He said about 3 months to heal (that was true). Best thing was, he gave me a polysling which made it much more comfortable. I did have to keep gently exercising the limb throughout this time.

Pineda · 08/05/2023 06:55

I definitely need an x rsy. There's no urgent treatment centre near us yet and the minor injuries is in a different town (I'm rural)

Think I'll just go straight to a and e when dh wakes up

Im an A&E nurse, if you have injured yourself and feel like something is wrong as movement is restricted or pain is unbearable when you try, you should always go, even if it turns out to be nothing serious, you should always go an get it checked.

There may be a wait, especially at the moment, it can be frustrating, but please be assured staff are doing their best to see people as quickly as they are able. Areas you see may seem quiet, but i can assure you other areas on the department wont be, and theres a knock on effect everywhere if one area is busier than others. But you will be seen, and no one will blink an eye at you going for an injury that has the potential for needing treatment.

Take a phone charger, snacks, and a drink though. Just in case.

Singleandproud · 08/05/2023 07:50

Take @lolalouisa84 advice. It was an Accident which has resulted in a reduction of mobility breathing/bleeding/bones is exactly what A&E is for.

Take supplies for the long haul and go sooner rather than later so you can get in before the Bank Holiday weekend drinkers.

TokyoSushi · 08/05/2023 07:54

Just go to A&E, sounds like you need to. Hope you're ok, let us know how you get on!

ElsaMars · 08/05/2023 08:23

Could be a dislocation, I've had it happen twice and its very sore and explains the way your arm and shoulder is 'sitting'. It's an easy fix if so

Qilin · 08/05/2023 08:32

I slipped and out my arm out.
It caused my elbow to dislocate and then ram itself back into place.
It remains the most painful thing I've ever experienced.
It was almost bare able it kept entirely still but agony with any movement or vibration. It's one of the few times I've actually cried from pain.

I went to a and e the following day (away in holiday and not quite as easy to sort out hence the delay). They confirmed what had happened based on x rays and the most unbelievable bruising I've ever seen. I'd also broken a tiny piece of bone on my elbow and on my finger - my hand hit the wall when I put my arm out, before hitting the floor. The ligaments and muscles were also damaged.

It was put in a 3/4 cast (so I could fly home) and a sling. Cast was in for a few weeks and it took a while to fully repair.

I would go somewhere you can have it x rayed, so minor injuries if you have one/they have x ray machines or A and E.

autienotnaughtym · 08/05/2023 08:35

I broke my collarbone and could only hold it in the position you are describing. Definitely go a&e.
