Classic should i go to A and E thread

Fell over in the mud yesterday and apart from looking like a tit, I put ny arm out to break my fall. I've done something to ny upper arm. Shoulder I think is ok and wrist fine. But anything that involves using or moving upper arm and bicep muscle is really painful. If it stays in the sling it's OK. Slept OK as long as I didn't move upper arm. Nothing visible maybe the beginning of a bruise. A and E?

It definitely sounds like you need an x-ray. Hoe it’s not too bad although it does sound bad.

Willmafrockfit · 08/05/2023 08:43

is it bruised?

MissyB1 · 08/05/2023 08:44

let us know how you get on at A&E, hope the wait isn’t too long 🤞

Ooh sounds nasty, hopefully the fact that you weight train will aid your healing (is that possible? I'm just clutching at straws).

JayAlfredPrufrock · 08/05/2023 08:56

You would know if you had dislocated it.

Get it x rayed

Pineda · 08/05/2023 09:43

Thanks all just waiting for an x ray. Was seen for triage in 5 minutes! Hopefully x Ray won't be too long. Have a horrible feeling I may have dislocated something.

Good luck!

lljkk · 08/05/2023 11:15

DH was in agony when he dislocated his shoulder (which was often). As in crying & moaning.

I've broken so many arms I'd know for myself instantly if it was my broken bone. There's a 'shock' feeling to it.

I'd predict soft tissue injury only for OP. Soft tissue injuries can hurt much more than broken bones, and take longer to heal, be warned...

Do update. Hope you feel better soon.

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/05/2023 11:17

Glad you went - it's there for exactly that!

WavingThroughYoWindow · 08/05/2023 11:43

Good luck OP!

Jitterybugs · 08/05/2023 13:19

Glad you’re being xrayed. Fingers crossed for a good outcome.

WoofWoofBeachLife · 08/05/2023 13:35

Oh no it sounds like when I fractured my clavicle, hopefully you'll get seen quickly and get some good pain relief into your system. 💐

HelenaJustina · 08/05/2023 13:41

Fingers crossed. When I broke my wrist it took hours for me to realise, when I did my leg I knew instantly.

Pineda · 08/05/2023 14:24

Nothing broken! Relieved but still in so much pain. They think a strain and possibly a tear.

Incredibly quick in A and E and lovely caring staff 😊

oh dear
have you got a sling?

lljkk · 08/05/2023 17:13

Did you get any great painkillers?
Or self-care advice, prognosis, further tests scheduled? You may find you want some physio later, when it is 'healed' but you still have stiffness from not using it much during the recovery period.

Codeine, which I don't like. A recommendation for physio when healed. No MRI scan or anything.

Yes

codeine makes me nauseous. I understand not liking that one.
Respect the pain but try to keep mobile when it feels ok to move it.

Yeah this is what I'm going to try and do in a day or so. I'm just taking paracetamol for now and might take codeine at night.

Pleased to read your update. I’m same age and fell onto my right outstretched arm 3 months ago. Thought may have dislocated, turned out to be dislocated and a bad impact fracture “like an airbag has gone off in there”. It’s not been fun.
Hope you get good physio and make a full recovery soon.

I cannot move my arm forward even a cm. Didn't know strains could be this bad

OP posts:
Pineda · 08/05/2023 18:11

I'm worried I have a bad bicep tendon tear and according to Google...that might not heal without surgery. I want full use of my arm as I weight lift - or used to.

I have had several pretty dreadful sprains/strains.

One ankle sprain situation - it took about 15 months to get better. I sprained the opposite knee at the same time and that took over 2 years because I did it less badly so ignored it, focusing my home physio exercises on the ankle. Definitely an error.

Then did a shoulder in again really badly, that took about 12 months to get better and 2 years before I could do a decent amount of swimming. No idea if it could have recovered faster as I couldn't access any functional physio as I did it January 2020 and by the time I had been referred etc everything was shut.

Probably worth self referring for physio at the very least (most places do self referrals now), as they'll probably have more of an idea if it will need surgery. The plus side if you life weights is at least you'll have a decent amount of supporting muscle round everything - I know for me, building supporting muscles has been really helpful in stabilising everything.
