Inspired by the insults that have stayed with you thread -

Because, even though I remember insults too, I've been practising collecting compliments to try and let the insults go!

What compliment made a massive difference to you and kept you going?

That I have great skin. I do take care as best I can.

scoobydoo1971 · 07/05/2023 00:18

After an operation that went terribly wrong, the surgeon who caused me paralysis was terribly haunted and had sleepless nights about what had happened. He has since retired as lost confidence. In our last meeting, he said I was lovely and the strongest person he had ever met. My father told me I was the smartest person he had ever met. He died over a decade ago, and I miss him every day as I wasn't as smart as he was.

You make people feel comfortable and heard

Bonitalazenia · 07/05/2023 00:24

‘I’d crawl across hot coals to stick twigs in your poo ‘……
I swear this happened! A text sent by someone I was dating. Gave me the right ick.

Fourcandleforkhandle · 07/05/2023 00:27

The Nursery Teacher told me my Daughter is so gentle and loving with all the Babydolls etc in Nursery and that she could tell Dd gets that from her Mummy.

A lady in MH crisis.

You've made me laugh and remember why I should live.

ImSoShiney · 07/05/2023 00:35

One DD age 6 "I love your corneas"
Other DD age 10 "I love your dress it makes your tummy look flat"

Abcdefgh1234 · 07/05/2023 00:41

“How come you always look so pretty even though we’ve been married for 10 years”. From my DH. He always says i’m pretty. His nick name for me is pretty since we are dating until now. Always call me pretty lady, its embarrassing sometimes because he do it in front of everybody as well.

also yesterday when i did school run my 7 years old boy told his teacher “my mum is so pretty isnt?” And its in front of me. I dont know its really made my day.

DramaAlpaca · 07/05/2023 01:06

Another one from me:

DS2, 24 at the time, told me that he was so proud that I'm his mum. I was chuffed to bits with that.

Oneandonly22 · 07/05/2023 01:24

My friend said to me recently after 2 of my DC were diagnosed with ASD within weeks or one another that I’m a real life superwomen and my kids are blessed to have me as their mum. I really needed to hear that.

Celia24 · 07/05/2023 01:36

A guy I was seeing once said: You're a woman of fortitude.

Felt like I was in a Jane Austen story 😁 we're still friends and I remember it fondly as I was having such a hard time.

MaMisled · 07/05/2023 02:18

I work nights as an HCP. I've been told by three quite challenging and prickly patients, "I feel safe when you're here". Meant so much to me

SinnerBoy · 07/05/2023 04:39

When my daughter was 4, we were in the park and she put a sparkly tiara on me, then painted my nails pink. We were capering about, singing Let it Go! when two mams with similar aged kids ambled by.

Daughter said, "Ha ha! My daddy looks silly, do you think he's a girl?"

One of them said, "No, I think he looks like a lovely dad. You're doing great, mate, don't ever be embarrassed!"

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 07/05/2023 07:30

One that really stands out is from DM, as she used to put me down a lot when I was growing up - she told me I’m a brilliant Mum. I tend to get lots of compliments from customers who come to my till, which is lovely. And I had a great one from my colleague - “ Ah everything will be ok now Sunshine is here”.

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · 07/05/2023 08:45

This is such a lovely, feel good thread 🥰

Thepossibility · 07/05/2023 08:59

I had an awful childhood with mean parents and on a school camp one of the staff complimented me on my eyes. And a couple of times after that recognised me and called me “lovely eyes".
I cried as our bus pulled away to head off home, leaving the adult that had noticed me in a positive way.

Clawdy · 07/05/2023 09:10

When I was about five, sitting on a bus with my mum. An old man getting off the bus pointed at me and said "Eyes like black diamonds! "

Violinist64 · 07/05/2023 09:12

Recently, I have had to make the difficult decision to semi-retire as I have been suffering from burnout. A friend said to me that l have nothing to prove. This meant a lot to me as I have always striven to be the best I can be for myself, my pupils and those for whom I have accompanied. I have always, like so many others, felt l was not quite good enough even though the results have spoken for themselves.

Tipsytart305 · 07/05/2023 09:32

When my 4yo nephew says I looove you Tipsy and your the best auntie after a long day of fun together ❤️

And dh recently said its a privilege to be your husband🥹 love him!

highlandcoos · 07/05/2023 10:05

A funny one this time.

One morning, when I was walking to work, a drunk man sitting on the pavement shouted out "You're beautiful" as I went by. He got up and proceeded to follow me, repeating that I was beautiful, till I had to run to get away. I wear glasses and I'm well turned out but not beautiful, and when I recount the story I add that I'm obviously attractive to drunk blokes!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/05/2023 10:19

"Thank goodness it's you".
From incident control when I clocked in for work during a very busy incident response shift, in which we were having to respond to a number of events that had never happened before.

(I work for an organisation that has Cat 1 ("blue light") responsibilities and powers when certain types of public safety incidents occur, in which we stop tThe day job and do our incident response roles on 24/7 shifts),

treespouse · 07/05/2023 13:00

My best friend says I'm like sunshine 😊

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/05/2023 21:21

From dh, years ago, when we were very aware of unhappy family/home circs of a brother of his, ‘Thank you for making a nice home.’
And he didn’t mean the decor or my standards of cleaning.

Scandimama · 07/05/2023 21:48

An ex said to me my heart is always in the right place.

A friend said I’m worth keeping.

another friend said I’m a good friend.

a manager said I’m smart and fun.

a colleague once said I can do anything I put my mind too. I think that’s the best compliment by I ever had.

I also had a lot of compliments on my appearance thought-out my life, and the only ones that made me feel good were the ones from people I was in love with/in a relationship with and the ones from good friends or family. Literally ALL the ones from men in clubs/public/bosses and colleagues (yes, right) just made me feel uncomfortable/stressed out like all I was to them was a pretty face and nothing else I did mattered. Think compliments on appearance only feel good if they come
from someone you know values other sides of you too.

AWaferThinMint · 08/05/2023 06:40

I was told be a boss I really respect that I can “turn my hand to anything” and another on hearing I’d been asked to work on a project in the business said he was so pleased I was on it as it would be in safe hands.
