Inspired by the insults that have stayed with you thread -

Because, even though I remember insults too, I've been practising collecting compliments to try and let the insults go!

What compliment made a massive difference to you and kept you going?

Guy I snogged at a nightclub aged about 24 told me I was perfect. Something about the way he said it made me believe he meant it.

Goodread1 · 06/05/2023 22:21

Love your thread idea,

Refreshing type of thread and obviously hearing yours and other mumsnetters stories too

Thank you ..

I was stood outside Frankie & Benny's late one Saturday night.
One of a couple that were dining there came out and told me I looked lovely in the outfit I was wearing.

It meant a lot at the time as I had bumped into my recent ex boyfriend, which had put a bit of a downer on the evening.

Gingerlygreen · 06/05/2023 22:24

My 3 year old daughter told me I was the best magician in the world after making a pom pom disappear, I threw it over my shoulder when she glanced away.

We were reading Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson. There’s a bit about the girl having “a nice mother who helped her make some paper dolls” I said to my then 3 or 4 year old perhaps I should be a nice mother (meaning let’s make some paper dolls) and she hugged me round the neck and said “you’re already an amazing mummy”

A friend of a friend said that she thought I was one of the most prettiest people she'd ever seen. I was in my early twenties. I was taken aback as no one had ever said anything like that to me before. It was nearly 30 years ago but I've always remembered it.

Popetthetreehugger · 06/05/2023 22:48

Mine goes way back , but probably had the biggest impact on me . First day of school, my aunt and uncle dropped in to see me off . My uncle Ron said theirs no flys on our poppet , she’s so bright , she’s going to love school . Well , I have dyslexia, took years and I mean years to learn to read . But never once have I doubted that I’m bright . I work in school, with teenagers who are finding things tricky . I usually work in , how it’s obvious that they’re bright and that they will fly . You see a light go on . And it’s true .

When my mum used to admit she itched to smack my DC back in the 90s and then 20 years later, admitted to me that I was right and I was better mum than she was because my DC saw me as equal and had more respect for me. She said... I thought you were being soft, but now I really get it.

DaneMum · 06/05/2023 22:57

At my wedding, my father in law said in his speech that I was "beautiful on the inside as well as on the outside". So sweet. He's a lovely father in law Smile

Gobolino80 · 06/05/2023 23:08

That I'm a good mum. That means more to me than anything.

WinginItAtDIY · 06/05/2023 23:14

I couldn't cope without you, you do so much for our dcs to make them happy and never forget things. Said by dh with a tear in his eyes

ThisIsTrifficult · 06/05/2023 23:20

My DH, bf at the time said I was the higgs boson of his life.
That made me beam.

My best friend calls me her oracle.

Jellifulfruit · 06/05/2023 23:28

I did a day trip to Manchester from London to see my friend. 1 tube and 2 trains each way, with my very active one year old, who liked imitating a seagull. On the last train home, still a tube journey until we were back indoors, I did every entertainment trick under my belt, and was just so conscious of annoying anyone on the train that internally I was melting.

Just as we were getting into London Euston, an older woman who had been sat near me, with I’m presuming her adult son, turned to me and said “you’re doing a really good job” and I had to fight so hard to stop the tears rolling down my cheeks.
I ran up to her at the station, just to thank her again. I wanted her to know just how meaningful those words were to me 🥺

Sgtmajormummy · 06/05/2023 23:30

Someone who only knew me in a work context said “I didn’t know you had children. Lucky kids.”
Made my day!

IjustbelieveinMe · 06/05/2023 23:35

I was told I had an inquisitive mind by an academic I used to work with. Being just a lowly admin person with no qualifications I've never forgotten it.

2023issucky · 06/05/2023 23:37

New reception lady at work told me recently that while trying to remember who we all were, wrote my name and next to it wrote "lovely lady" on a post it that still lives in her drawer.

My adult daughter telling me that if I didn't make her do the things she was afraid of, with extra support, she wouldn't be where she is now.

My husband asked me how I always know what to do when it comes to helping others.

EddieHoweisMYmanager · 06/05/2023 23:39

My daughter in her mid teens posted a Mother’s Day wish to me on Facebook entitled ‘to the coolest woman I know’. She has no idea how much that meant to me!

mysonsmother82 · 06/05/2023 23:44

That I'm like the Mary poppins of mums.

Dancingqueenwannabe · 06/05/2023 23:48

My mum told me that I was the most incredible mum and it was no wonder why my children loved me so much. That meant the world coming from the woman I consider the most incredible mum xx

mysonsmother82 · 06/05/2023 23:48

Years ago a guy in a nightclub told me I looked just like Michelle pheiffer! I don't at all but it was nice to hear.

Weirdly a taxi driver recently told me I looked like Annie Lennox.. couldn't get two women who looked more different 😂

847arc · 06/05/2023 23:52

A senior member of staff whom I looked up to and was known for not mincing words, said that it was a real shame I was leaving because I was bloody good at my job.

RenoDakota · 06/05/2023 23:52

My son telling me I will be an 'awesome' grandmother.

Bonjovispjs · 07/05/2023 00:00

A friend once told me I'm the most lovable person she knows. Not sure how many people she knows though 😆

Arketaddictmum · 07/05/2023 00:08

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · 06/05/2023 16:57

I moved jobs recently and one of my team said I was not only a great manager but a super human being. That made me cry a little but in a nice way. I felt very valued.

That is really lovely!!

Arketaddictmum · 07/05/2023 00:14

Probably the nicest thing that's happened to me career-wise was that our head of production - an incredibly talented person who'd sadly been managed out of his decade-long role after a take-over, left a CD in my drawer with ten songs on it with my name in the title.

I never got any vibes from him when he was there, but he was incredibly demanding and intimidating, and I was just taken aback by his gesture. It probably had very little to do with my work performance, but was lovely to receive anyway. I've never seen him since btw.
