There were a lot of these around for last royal beano and they were remarkably cheerful. Anyone got any photos of current ones? Or are they few and far between? I've seen some on tv but none in real life.👑

More!

I love the Maypole one. Does anyone still dance around the Maypole on May Day anymore? I hope they do but I'm afraid some of our traditions are dying off 😔

I'm going on a hunt for Coronation postbox toppers today...

One from our local area. I think they’re fab!

Yes they do quite a bit in the south! We had a maypole fete near us in Sussex.

@Justalittlebitduckling You are not alone.

I promise I am not usually a miserable bastard, and I usually love creativity, but these things really piss me off, even though I know it is irrational and they delight loads of people.
It might be because the woman locally who does them started posting on the local FB group fishing for compliments and when she didn’t get any would be a sulky about it as if she wants everyone to comment how amazing she is and if she doesn’t get enough likes she “bumps” the post.
Or it could be because with typical British wet weather, I really hate them getting soggy, like they shouldn’t be outdoors?
i wish I could be more enthusiastic but I do enjoy other people loving them, I just can’t do it!

I’m glad it’s not just me!

Oh I’m really glad to hear it.

We haven't had any coronation ones that I've seen but there were some splendid jubilee ones when I was on holiday in Whitby last year, particularly in saltburn. Officially, I'm a republican and am not taking part in any coronation bobbins but as an avid knitter and crocheter I am loving all these works of art!

Crunched · 05/05/2023 15:40

bruffin They are works of art. How wonderful.

Ours are Hertfordshire and they do great Christmas ones as well. I am looking to join them.
My sister lives in Norfolk . In her garden is a tall metal pole which she sticks ribbons on and we have our very own maypole at our annual family get together

bruffin · 05/05/2023 15:55

There are 39 post box toppers over 2 towns .

lostinfusion · 05/05/2023 15:58

there's a very impressive one down the road from my office. Maybe i'm miserable but I can't help wondering what happens to them afterwards & thinking it's a terrible waste of yarn to end up a soggy mess on a post box

mommybear1 · 05/05/2023 16:10

I only passed one by me today - looked stunning

They dry out really well and can be reused, reworked and put out again.

My local toppers are always fab.

I'm getting sick of them now because there's a lot of fishing for validation going on around the local illuminknitty that do them - and some of ours are, well, a bit shit - and I've never liked knitting for soft toys compared to crochet - unless you pick your yarn and gauge really really carefully it can tip over into flaccid limp, happy as fuck undercooked sausage with knit compared to crochet. The well executed ones are lovely (we have a fab King Boo at the moment outside Sainsbos) but some of ours are really really more than a bit craply done.

Then someone nicks one and it's like more fucking mass mourning that when the Queen died around here and more investigation and amateur sleuthing then surrounds any big news story.

Savvy knitters/crocheters use acrylic yarn rather than natural fibres as it does not stretch as much, and washes.

Can't speak for other crafters but after use I take mine home, take the decorations off the base, wash the base, salvage what I can and use another time.

This one was made by the local knit and natter group

Just driven through Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire and even the covered bus stop has been yarn bombed hopefully can get some pictures this weekend

Rummikub · 05/05/2023 18:25

ShanghaiDiva · 04/05/2023 19:42

Sometimes the yarnbombing is an organised activity. 24 post boxes were covered in a town near us with proceeds (you buy a map to find all the boxes) going to hospice care. My dd made this one for a beside the sea theme. She taught herself to crochet and was 15 when she made this.

That is awesome!

Theoldcuriosityshop · 05/05/2023 18:28

Someone stole our local one. There was such an uproar, it was put back again Grin

Rummikub · 05/05/2023 18:30

I love seeping the creativity and effort.

Indo wonder how they stay in such good condition. Are they washed regularly?

PMSL at that, that just makes the whole thing even more British than it was already 😆
