London trip - should I stay in Feltham?

Hi everyone,

I have a 3 week visit to London for work coming up. I've been looking around at places to stay and London accommodation is expensive or fully booked.

I found a place in North Feltham - good transport links, about 10-15 min walk from Feltham station, self-catering, etc.

I know nothing about this area and when I look it up, various threads say it isn't very nice.

Would it be safe to stay around North Feltham? I won't have a car, so it will be trains back and forth to London every other day.

Thanks in advance

I don't think that budget is realistic sorry. Even basic airbnb would be £90 plus

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/05/2023 20:08

Have a look on spareroom for a short term let?

SurreyMumOfOne · 04/05/2023 20:11

I really wouldn't stay in Feltham.

That budget isn't very realistic unfortunately, and as pp have said the further out you go, the more you'll pay on travel. Ideally you want somewhere within the Oyster zone which Walton isn't.

A spareoom or Airbnb would probably be your best bet and also allow you to self cater which will save a bit.

Alloveragain3 · 04/05/2023 20:15

Sorry OP but Feltham is grim and I never felt safe when I worked there

Namechanger355 · 04/05/2023 20:16

Wasn’t feltham the Hq of the national front ? Although there is a good cineworld complex there isn’t tbere

i have roots in Hounslow but it’s really taken a nosedive recently - not racist but just not a great place

tbh anywhere is better… harrow, Kingston, Whitton

surely the offenders are safe behind bars though

Only the ones they've caught...

Greenshake · 04/05/2023 21:31

I live in Walton 🙂 and I would definitely avoid Feltham and Hounslow. Absolutely awful. If you decide to stay in Walton let me know and we can meet for a coffee if you like?

Guavafish1 · 04/05/2023 21:34

Feltham is not too bad, not a place of culture. However there are good transport link to Waterloo plus uber and its cheap.

There are shops and supermarkets close by aswell as cinema. It's a multiple culture area.

I don't think its as bad as everyone is making out (it use to be terrible place but has improved) to be but don't have high expectations of loveliness too. I think it's safer than East London.

Guavafish1 · 04/05/2023 21:43

Hounslow is also fine. There is nothing bad about Hounslow... its your run of your mill Borough... nothing happens. Its not a fancy place and there no real night life.

Again it multicultural area ljke feltham with mostly Indian descant inhabitants. Its a family area and must people work at Heathrow airport.

It's fine staying in Hounslow and Feltham... again they both have good public transport, its cheap and safe.

Orangepink75 · 04/05/2023 21:43

Walton has a train station.

MadEyeMoodysEye · 04/05/2023 21:54

Walton is much nicer than Feltham. But a pp suggested Stratford and I think that's a better option being in London rather than just outside so much quicker/cheaper travel.

gogohmm · 04/05/2023 21:58

Try looking down the line towards Kent (comes into Waterloo east) but with transport strikes on and off it may cause issues

wibblywobblytummytumtum · 04/05/2023 21:58

No! Absolutely do not stay in Feltham!

Bitingspaniel · 04/05/2023 21:59

West London getting a battering here! Both Feltham and Hounslow are unbeautiful, run of the mile London 'burbs. They wouldn't be my first choice to stay but nor are they super dodgy. For trains to Waterloo you could also look at Whitton (previously mentioned), Isleworth, Brentford. There's also Richmond and St Margarets but they're leafier and will be more expensive. Good luck!

Travel lodges in Kingston, Teddington and twickenham are coming in at £70-75 per night for end of May/beginning of June

lozrox90 · 04/05/2023 22:03

I've stayed in Feltham a few times when attending matches at Twickenham and it's fine imo. Not the most picturesque of places and I wouldn't go walking around alone late at night (but then I wouldn't anywhere tbh), but there's a good choice of shops and restaurants and a rail station, all good to me.

Mousey23 · 04/05/2023 22:05

I know Feltham very well. It's not dangerous or somewhere you would have problems walking to/from the station - typical working class London - a bit down at heel, and with the normal inner city problems, but nothing that would affect you walking the streets.

There's nothing to do in the evenings and no decent places to eat. "North Feltham" is pretty much at the end of the Heathrow runways, and some of the properties up there are decidedly low-rent/shabby.

Walton, however, is a pleasant commuter town with some nice restaurants. If that's an option, I'd definitely go with that one ...

mephi · 04/05/2023 22:09

Where are you travelling from? I go to that are often for work and am coming from the west. Stops on the way are cheaper than going as far as Feltham. I stay near Reading station which massively reduces my morning journey and then get the train in. I have also stayed nearer, in Eton and got the train in. I also stay in Teddington which is very near, but not for £50. I wouldn't stay in Feltham. The premier inn Slough is ok (not a great area but the hotel is fine and opposite the police station) and then you can get the train in from Slough as the hotel is five mins walk away from the station. I tried the holiday inn at Shepperton but that didn't feel at all nice and I wouldn't do it again - though that was more than £50 as well.

QuacketyQuack · 04/05/2023 22:10

What a snobby thread

FanSpamTastic · 04/05/2023 22:11

How about house sitting? You might find something that fits in with your dates? Get work to pay for the week you have to be there for work reasons then do a house sit for the remainder?

sabrr · 04/05/2023 22:42

I lived in Feltham for 6 years.

It's really not that bad. Got lovely connections to Windsor and Staines too!

Go for it.

sabrr · 04/05/2023 22:47

And I had far better experience living in hounslow and Feltham than Chiswick, Whitton and Harrow!

You have all the shops close by. Good connections and get to Hatton Cross tube station and you be the first on the tube!

Don't let these snobby people fool you into paying more to stay in a area 5-10 mins drive away from Feltham just because it's basically seen as a Caucasian safe place (Chiswick I'm looking at you)

Absolutely ridiculous

misssunshine4040 · 04/05/2023 22:51

Nothing wrong the Ibis Budget in Hounslow. It's 5 mins walk to the tube and 20 mins straight in. It's not glamorous but it's comfortable and safe

Bessica1970 · 04/05/2023 22:57

We stay in Feltham at least once a year at the travel lodge there when we fly back into London (rather than drive back to the Midlands on no sleep after a long haul flight).

It’s also our stopover of choice for a weekend in London as it’s always really cheap. I’ve always felt safe there travelling with children on the train and tbh I’m a bit puzzled by all the negative comments. It’s not beautiful but it’s hardly grim either!
