London trip - should I stay in Feltham?

Hi everyone,

I have a 3 week visit to London for work coming up. I've been looking around at places to stay and London accommodation is expensive or fully booked.

I found a place in North Feltham - good transport links, about 10-15 min walk from Feltham station, self-catering, etc.

I know nothing about this area and when I look it up, various threads say it isn't very nice.

Would it be safe to stay around North Feltham? I won't have a car, so it will be trains back and forth to London every other day.

Thanks in advance

I wouldn't stay in Feltham! I live in the area. What about Staines? It's 2 stops down the line from Feltham and it has a large Premier Inn on the high st, about 5 mins walk from the station. Seems to get good reviews too.

What she said!

TheFlis12345 · 04/05/2023 18:17

Are you a light sleeper? Because flights start pre 5am and it can be loud that close to Heathrow!

FeelinSpendy · 04/05/2023 18:17

I agree - I’d avoid Feltham if possible.

jaundicedoutlook · 04/05/2023 18:18

Feltham’s very handy for the Young Offenders Institute…

PaniniHead · 04/05/2023 18:20

Where in London are your meetings?

Collie86 · 04/05/2023 18:21

Thanks for the replies so far, and no, not a light sleeper; but I was suspicious that the Feltham place had a significantly lower price given the nice facilities. The reviews are good but I don't know, it's an important trip and I'll be given work materials and so on.

The search continues...

Which part of London do you need to get to for work?

HeidiUpTheMountain · 04/05/2023 18:25

If your trip is outside of university term time, have you looked at using university accommodation? They are usually either b&b or self catering, and are better value than hotels. Here’s a link for the website:

Waterloo and central London. If you know of any lodgings around, feel free to recommend. Trip will be end of may for three weeks.

Thanks everyone

What is your budget?

Collie86 · 04/05/2023 18:30

@doadeer around 40-50 GBP per night. Going to be a longish trip (3 weeks).

A week before Brexit I stopped in a Feltham coffee shop before getting a train out of there. I was the only customer and the server was in tears. In tears because the oaf who left as I arrived had heard her speak, she was Italian, and told her to fuck off back to where she came from. Filled me with despair for what was going to come. Stay anywhere else, it's not a nice place to be in.

Willmafrockfit · 04/05/2023 18:33

surely the offenders are safe behind bars though

Housenoob · 04/05/2023 18:33

If it's a work trip aren't your expenses covered, including accommodation?

Maybe look for airbnbs rather than hotels?

Saffronn · 04/05/2023 18:33

If it’s a work trip, I think your company needs to stump up more than £50/ night. You’re not going to get anything sensible for that.

Collie86 · 04/05/2023 18:36

I have another option for a place in Walton. Work will pay the first week then I'll pay for the additional thereafter because I want to stay and see friends, places etc.

Agree you will rally struggle on that budget, particularly as if it’s 3 weeks from the end of May that will incorporate half term week when prices rise massively.

loudbatperson · 04/05/2023 18:38

Feltham is a bit of a dump, although I am not sure you are going to find what you are after for your budget.

Have you looked out along the Elizabeth line in both directions? You might have more luck if you look for somewhere outside of London boroughs.

arapunzel · 04/05/2023 19:32

Feltham is a bit of a dive - but there are definitely worse out there.
Positives - direct trains to Waterloo a good few times an hour, including a fast service.
Lots of bus services
Lots of local facilities - Asda, Tesco, Leisure West (cinema & resturants)

Not that familiar with Walton, but I don’t think it has much in way of shops/train services.

One to avoid is Hounslow.

Gerwurtztraminer · 04/05/2023 19:36

Bear in mind the further out you go the more expensive train/tube travel will be each day.

London Underground services have a daily price cap (£9.60 for Zones 1-3 rising to £14.90 for Zones 1-6). But if you stay somewhere with only train services into London, it could be even more for the journey into Waterloo, plus then bus or tube fares to get around once in the city. You could easily end up spending more on travel than paying the extra to stay somewhere more central. (I assume you meant Walton on Thames - that's £17.40 return for example).

Plus the further out you are the longer the commute time and many stations at night are deserted and don't feel that safe.

Unfortunately I can't see how you are going to get anywhere decent for that budget really.

MissPoldark · 04/05/2023 19:42

I assume it could be difficult to find somewhere at short notice with a solid 3 week slot of availability. Might you find better options by splitting it up perhaps?

trampoline123 · 04/05/2023 19:43

I'd avoid feltham and Hounslow.

What about whitton? It's near feltham so may be affordable but much nicer, and very well connected.

BasiliskStare · 04/05/2023 19:49

@Collie86 I have worked near Feltham some years ago & I would not stay there if you can find something better . Nothing around and takes a while to get into "London" - Some places say they are London and are a fair way out.

Other posters who have said decide between price of hotel , B&B or Air B&B and the cost of getting into "proper London" and even it all out. I agree.

I do not mean to dismiss those who live in some of the outskirts of London but there is a cost of travel - so it might be worth ( if you want to spend your time more centrally ) looking for a slightly more expensive room & less on travel . Travel is pretty good in London but not free . I think you have a tight budget there but I would do a bit more research before I settled for Feltham .

All the best

Airbnb in Stratford for £50 per night. Jubilee line to Waterloo. Elizabeth Line/Central line to most of London! Much better option than Feltham.
