This drives me bonkers! Why the hell do people keep writing walaa when it's voila!

My beloved late MIL used to have cotoneaster in her garden - pronounced (by her) as cotton easter. Always made us laugh. However I am aware that many people won't ever have heard it said. It should be pronounced cotone-eeyaster by the way.

Hullobaby · 04/05/2023 19:46

Pigs and troughs has got to be the best one yet!

Glad I am not the only one that is driven bonkers by these errors.

I wish someone would educate John Terode on when to use "I" and when to use "me".
JT to camera: "our cooks are going to have to convince Greg and I..."
It is a simple rule but he gets it wrong every time.

RSintes · 04/05/2023 19:58

I'm sure someone with proper French knowledge has already mentioned this but in case not, it's actually "voilà"

As you were, MNers....

seratoninmoonbeams · 04/05/2023 20:09

I'm on route. I'm also on tenderhooks 😖

Some people are just thick, unfortunately.

See also 'Chester Draws'.

Oh Jesus, that one wrecks me. I

Hullobaby · 04/05/2023 20:12

Yes I know it has an accent but I have an ancient phone which doesn't have the ability to do accents. Should have mentioned that in my OP. My partner is actually french and when I showed him he nearly collapsed laughing.

A face book.friend posted a photo of her son in his new uniform and somebody he looked very swarve.

🙈🙈🙈

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 04/05/2023 20:19

Dp says jesus web and I always picture jesus shooting webs out his hands like spiderman 😂

I was also someone who read loads but didn't hear words said aloud (see posthumously pronounced as after hummus....). I am also originally from the North so might use colloquial words or phrases in certain contexts but i think being able to express yourself clearly - in standard English - is so important. I gently correct my 3 year old's adorable mispronunications because, when the time comes, she needs to be able to spell and read properly and therefore understand the correct pronunciation.

I disagree with calling people thick but I don't agree we shouldn't point out inaccuracies (if we can and nicely). Language may develop but it doesn't develop very quickly - you can't expect to just write phonetically and hope for the best. I also don't understand why people don't look things up if in doubt- you literally have Google at your fingertips. There's something very off putting about thinking people should just be able to work out what you're trying to say.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 04/05/2023 20:30

I think it’s mean calling people stupid and thick. We’re all ignorant about something. Some people also just learn things from their parents or peers and if no one has ever challenged them they don’t notice anything wrong.

I used to say a common idiom incorrectly until someone pointed it out. I then noticed my mum saying it and realised I picked it up from her 😂

But god - this thread is depressing.

Well done, you’re all soooo clever.

I agree. How very dare people attempt to speak or write if they don't have a great education. Or simply aren't the brightest.
I think things like wallah and chester draws are a bit cute and go on with my day.

All you need to do is type into Google 'chester drawers' and it correctly spells it for you. (I just have to see what would come up)

Everything these days, if you do not know how to spell something, Google it.

My dad bought something called Chicken Voila! And he told me how much he enjoyed the chicken vi o la.

OP, how do you feel about using accents correctly... because it's voilà Wink
voi = look, derived from voire = to look
là = there

'la' without the accent = the (feminine article)

But I appreciate it's the English spelling of a French word! I pronounce it the French way - vwah-lah.
The entirely unrelated Arabic "I swear to god" is وَٱللّٰه (literally 'by god') and is pronounced w'allah.

Now off to listen to France's Eurovision 2021 contestant, Barbara Pravi - Voilà...

Voir = to look in French.

QueenCamillasuelaBananahammock · 04/05/2023 22:28

It is annoying. I've also seen 'pre madonna' on here once.

Is that before 1984 or thereabouts?

Approximately 2024 years ago (opinions vary).

Damnloginpopup · 04/05/2023 22:31

I'll just leave this with you from last week. FFS.

It's 'Voila' not walaa!

Whoops, you're quite right! In my defence, French is my fourth language and it's been a good few years, things get confused.

‘Rest Bite’ and ‘Gawjus’ are everywhere…

Yes restbite annoys me, I see Gawjus, but thought it was written ironically?
Another one I get irrationally annoyed with ( I'm a various Facebook groups for children with disabilities()
is people applying for "Careers allowance " rather than Carers allowance
I thought, it was a typo, but I see it so often.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2023 11:39

I read "gawjuz" in the voice of Craig Revell Horwood

Comefromaway · 05/05/2023 11:41

Yes, I just thought gawjuz was written phonetically in a particular accent.

SummerHouse · 05/05/2023 12:36

I didn't realise this was such a fox pass.

happyinherts · 05/05/2023 12:46

This has just come through on my Facebook Feed....
