This drives me bonkers! Why the hell do people keep writing walaa when it's voila!

OP posts:
loislovesstewie · 04/05/2023 15:45

Or ' off my own back'. And as is frequently said on mumsnet people who don't know the difference between nickname and diminutive.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 04/05/2023 15:49

I’ve seen it written Wallah before by Uber Christian American bloggers but have also seen it in the Arabic context too. So it’s not ALWAYS wrong I guess.

My old boss used to say generally when she definitely meant genuinely. That is just stupidity.

Also ‘fine tooth-comb’ 🤔 what is a tooth comb supposed to be??

People just don’t think things through.

Gonksmum · 04/05/2023 15:49

If you want to be superbly pedantic, there is an accent on the à too!

Hullobaby · 04/05/2023 15:49

Argh these are both infuriating and hilarious! I don't know why it bothers me so much. I am a very laid back person normally but this just winds me up!

YESSS. My son goes by a diminutive 100% of the time and people (on here) just cannot understand that at all 😄 it’s not like he’s going round being called Peanut or Squidge or something 😄

TheNinthLock · 04/05/2023 15:51

And it’s palaver, not palava (unless you’re Nigerian)

wildlifeintegration · 04/05/2023 16:03

ComeOnThenFanny · 04/05/2023 15:25

There are so many of these that drive me insane!

Putting someone on a pedal stool
Play it by year

And my personal favourite - making someone an escape goat 😂

Michael Scott is the king of these.
Escape goat haha

MY 2 CENTS- I actually say Viola. As on the instrument. Is it not a word about music?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/05/2023 16:03

Fair enough that these mistakes annoy you but why the need for personal judgement to be attached?

'Thick', 'stupidity'...? It says far more about the person saying that.

Shame really as some of the examples are funny and those posters aren't being dicks either.

noun: fine-tooth comb;

  1. a comb with narrow teeth that are close together.

2)used with reference to a very thorough search or analysis of something.
"they went through the house with a fine-tooth comb"

Hopefully you never have to wield a fine-tooth comb on a reluctant child as you search for nits and eggs in the latest outbreak at school.

I agree that it sounds as though you are combing your teeth, rather than brushing them! ☺️

Aksed instead of asked

icanneverthinkofnc · 04/05/2023 16:11

Grammar is..

It's 'Voila' not walaa!
Cantthinkofaname2203 · 04/05/2023 16:15

Upmost instead of utmost is the one I’m seeing a lot.

Sugarfish · 04/05/2023 16:17

Got a friend who says “expresso martini” which annoys me because it’s one of the only cocktails she ever orders so she must have seen it written on menus countless times.

Another friend who says “play it by hear” For example if we try and arrange a night out but can’t decide what to do she’ll say “let’s just go out and play it by hear” I corrected her once and she said her way makes more sense because it’s like we’ll decide what to do based on we see and hear around us. Made me think of that Friends episode where Joey explains a Moo point. It’s wrong but kind of makes sense.

TheVanguardSix · 04/05/2023 16:19

While we’re all here and listening, it’s en route not on route.

Although that one is unusual because it makes sense either way.

ChristmasRoses · 04/05/2023 16:23

I saw someone write it "Wallah!" a while back. Can't believe people are so ignorant

Yes, that's all correct. But the PP was complaining about fine tooth-comb, not fine-tooth comb.

QOD · 04/05/2023 16:24

i was going to reply but i can't be asked

ASKED!! fuck off!! IT'S arsed

I can't be ARSED

that's my one 😁

A significant proportion of my colleagues think it’s a mute point.

I think you've misunderstood, the poster was commenting that she had seen 'fine tooth-comb' rather than 'fine-tooth comb'

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 04/05/2023 16:25

It is annoying. I've also seen 'pre madonna' on here once.

Viola is an instrument or flower. Voilà is a French word meaning here/there/this, used as an exclamation when revealing something.

Wallah is a valid expression in Arabic.
Basically saying "it's the truth according to God".

That is very obviously not how people are using it. Come on.
