It's 'Voila' not walaa!

This drives me bonkers! Why the hell do people keep writing walaa when it's voila!

Phased instead of fazed. It's very common here on Mumsnet, drives me mad.

BaconMassive · 04/05/2023 16:35

Someone I used to work with always said "pigs and troughs" instead of "peaks and troughs".

becarefuloutthere · 04/05/2023 16:37

So if it's influencers on insta doing it, it's because of Jesy Nelson writing it like this on a post from years ago so it's a tongue in cheek reference @Hullobaby

Ossification · 04/05/2023 15:03

That's just ridiculous
And it is not pronounced walaa. Most people with a modicum of intelligence pronounce the v as v, not w

Most people with a modicum of decency don't insult people for making a spelling mistake.

greyhairnomore · 04/05/2023 16:39

I think it's supposed to be jokey.

MissDollyMix · 04/05/2023 16:41

It's a MN classic but the old 'spag bowl' still gets me....

Aksed instead of asked

Aksed is a perfectly valid African-American grammatical construction.

It's been demonised through the years by ignorant people who see African American language ( and by extension Multicultural London English) as incorrect and somehow lesser.

Sorry...but I might be being dense here....
but what does "Voila" mean?

ComeOnThenFanny · 04/05/2023 16:53

SoupDragon · 04/05/2023 16:27

Is that before 1984 or thereabouts ?

🤣🤣

It means there it is.

I do not speak French but understand and can speak a few words learned from the telly/books etc.

Knittedfairies · 04/05/2023 16:55

Cue and queue seems to cause confusion for a few people too.

goldfootball · 04/05/2023 16:58

Voila is pronounced with a sort of indeterminate v/w sound in French though.

WillowtreeHouse · 04/05/2023 16:59

Draws instead of drawers. Hate that!

CeliaCanth · 04/05/2023 17:00

I saw a message on our local FB asking whether there were “any easter bloons” recently…

Also, on another thread, someone who wanted to abolish “prima genture”.

Needmorelego · 04/05/2023 17:00

@Dalekjastninerels oh I think I get it. I do know the word 😂
I don't think I have ever thought about how it's spelt. Not sure where people are hearing the "wh" sound though.

Jellycats4life · 04/05/2023 17:01

Walaa cracks me up.

Also saw a complete butchering of deja vu the other day that was pretty funny.

Needmorelego · 04/05/2023 17:02

Sorry....more the "wa" sound - not "wh" !

Is one contention in a wider and complex debate.

Whilst on the subject of how important spelling and grammar may or may not be, it's good to recognise that one article does not a fact make.

Flowertight · 04/05/2023 17:07

I can’t bear ‘on tender hooks’

and

loose instead of lose (and vice versa).

MMBaranova · 04/05/2023 17:07

>And it's not 'Viola!' either!

A friend at school was the Cello kid. It seemed bigger then her and she often travelled with it. She used to jokingly say 'Viola' as she put the thing where she liked to store it. We then had a phase of a group of us saying 'Viola', waiting to be corrected.

Silly. The years pass. I still have to concentrate to not say it.

Swansandcustard · 04/05/2023 17:10

Is it toe the line or toe the line. I thought the former but see the latter so much I’m doubting myself.

Toe the line as in walk very strictly along a line and don’t deviate: do exactly as you’re told.

Swansandcustard · 04/05/2023 17:10

Tow. Ffs

TrashyPanda · 04/05/2023 17:11

English was my late DFs 3rd language, and he was pretty good

but he always said someone had “bendy” legs, rather than “bandy”

I think his version is more descriptive!

isthismylifenow · 04/05/2023 17:16

I see Walla a lot where I live. But then again many people here do not speak English as a first language.

I think some of these comments are out of line. Calling people thick and stupid. I would like to see some of you speaking and writing posts in a 2nd or even 3rd language.

StillWantingADog · 04/05/2023 17:19

Wow I came on to say that I don’t think pronouncing it walaa is very unusual.

I’ve never seen it written down like that before though, before just now that is. Blimey.

random Facebook selling groups I find are full of such horrors.
