Do you spend time in your bedroom

I'm decorating my house room by room . I was going to do my room first as I always do everything for the kids before myself. I asked for some ideas and it seems people spend time in their bedroom . I had suggestions like a nice reading corner . A place to enjoy the view. A comfortable place to chill out etc. Then I thought whats the point all I do is sleep in my room . So maybe i should do the kids rooms first .

I had not realised adults spend time in their room other than when they sleep. ?

what a waste to have a whole room in the house never used except when you are asleep - you dont really need it in that case, do you?

I have my desk in mine, and work here, also watch TV on the laptop, read, etc

Where do you do those things?

I have a bedroom at the top of my house which I use just for sleeping. It's heaven. My little room of peace and calm. I work in my home office and watch tv or read in my living room on my fabulously comfy sofa.

I deliberately keep my bedroom just for sleeping. Even my wardrobes are in another room. Sleep is very important to me so a room dedicated to slumber is perfect for me. And is definitely needed.

No I don't. It's basically just for sleeping. Obviously getting dressed etc and a bit of reading in bed, but that's all. I don't think it is a waste. It is a good sized room but not enormous. We have enough space elsewhere that I don't need to spend time there in the day. I could imagine setting up a small desk or a sitting area if there was plenty of space in your room and no space elsewhere.

no, I am saying it is a position of phenomenal wealth and privilege to have a room entirely for sleeping, and standing empty for the whole day. I think its another example of the very wealthy not recognising they are very wealthy.

I think in the uK it is probably normal for bedrooms to double as studies, playrooms, tv rooms, etc. Ours are all work places, as well as sleeping places, and we have a communal living room as well where we do things together

Lots of people in the UK living in one room! bed room IS living room! and in other countries too, in fact I have taught in schools where orphans sleep on the floor in the classrooms. Maybe why I am looking at this from a different perspective to some other posters. You dont have to be destitute not to have a room only for sleeping in though.

And what an phenomenol position of luxury to decide you want to alternate between different rooms for the sake of your mental health 😂

Well from my perspective, you are in a position of privilege to have a bedroom large enough to fit a desk and a chair in it!

I have my own study to work or do admin stuff. We have a sitting room with a TV. We also have a kitchen/diner/family room where I may be on my laptop, read etc. Yes we probably have more space than we stricktly "need" but we do make good use of all the space and to say someone doesn't need a bedroom and it is a waste to only sleep there is a bit extreme! It is the norm in this and many countries.

eh? What a bizarre thing to say 🤣

I spent time in my bedroom as a teen as it was my space, I have the rest of the house I own now to read, work, watch tv. I can’t imagine anything worse than working in my bedroom personally.

No telly in our bedroom but we do have speakers in there and a nice comfy chair and footstool so I sometimes chill out with my feet up with a book or podcast. I don’t have young children to consider though…..

I live in my bedroom, it's got 2 desks for all my art and craft projects, various storage for my supplies, a mini fridge and coffee machine and most importantly my rats live up here too. DH has the dining room with his desk and games consoles in. We're all lucky to have absolutely massive bedrooms so they get used a hell of a lot.

Hbh17 · 01/05/2023 15:25

Everyone is different. I have always refused to have a TV in the living room, as they are so ugly and dominate the room. I have bookshelves in my living room instead. So our only (small) TV is in the bedroom - has worked out fine for us for over 30 years, as only 2 of us in the household.

SoftCoeur · 01/05/2023 15:31

I have a TV and a beautiful velvet loveseat with a cosy throw in my room. I love to go there with a morning coffee and watch something or read. It might be my favourite thing in my house, actually.

I don't like mooching in bed, though. The chair is key.

Maybe a massive bedroom will be the new MN Massive Salad. Maybe knocking through bedrooms will be the next project for empty nesters who've already done the living-kitchen-diner thing.

I thought for years that it's a bit weird we all occupy the top half of our house at night, then migrate to the bottom half together in the daytime. It seems so inefficient - surely better to roll the beds up like you can with a futon, and turn the bedrooms into living rooms for the daytime. But I have a perfectly good living room and I'm comfy reading on my bed, so I have never been bothered enough to do anything about it.

My huge bedroom comes courtesy of the victorian terraced council house I live in. Grin
