Do you spend time in your bedroom

I'm decorating my house room by room . I was going to do my room first as I always do everything for the kids before myself. I asked for some ideas and it seems people spend time in their bedroom . I had suggestions like a nice reading corner . A place to enjoy the view. A comfortable place to chill out etc. Then I thought whats the point all I do is sleep in my room . So maybe i should do the kids rooms first .

I had not realised adults spend time in their room other than when they sleep. ?

what a waste to have a whole room in the house never used except when you are asleep - you dont really need it in that case, do you?

I have my desk in mine, and work here, also watch TV on the laptop, read, etc

Where do you do those things?

Yes I did need it to sleep. I did not have my own room for 7 years or so . So I definitely need my room to sleep

Bedrooms should only be for sleeping and having sex. I wouldn't have a tv in mine as wouldn't be able to sleep. I like lying in bed reading though. Tried wfh in it and didn't like it. I have a window seat if I want a quite space to read in my bedroom

Lol. Sleeping is pretty important though! And you spend a lot of time doing that each day so I’d say a nice sleeping environment is top of the list for me.

All the other stuff is done in the living room.

What do you mean you don't really need it? Where would you sleep otherwise? Would you say you don't need a bathroom because you only use it to go to the toilet and don't have a desk in there?

I spent a lot of time in mine - in part because I took the time to properly decorate and furnish it so I just love being in there and am an introvert so actively enjoy time away from hustle and bustle, alone.

It's the largest room in the house and a decent size so I've put some fitted bookshelves in there and a lovely large chair, wall lighting etc and love being there. It also houses my desk so if I'm doing a bit of work (am part time self employed and part time chronically unwell) then it also has a nice area for that. I do spend a lot of time in bed as a result of illness and having done up the bedroom has really improved my mental health in that respect when I'm stuck there; a comfortable bed with good quality bedding, blackout blinds, my aromadiffuser, and everything I'd need around me makes it a hundred times easier to bear that it used to be.

I take people's point about sleep hygiene but I don't generally watch TV and if I wanted to I'd be happy to go downstairs to do that, ditto if I fancy a change of scenery then I'll go and sit in the dining room or potter around the house. In spring summer my preference would be to sit outside on the patio as long as possible, so that's the only time I don't defer to my bedroom as a preference.

Spendonsend · 30/04/2023 18:31

I just sleep and dress in mine.

I quite like the idea of a comfy chair to read in but it is too small.

aSofaNearYou · 30/04/2023 18:39

That’s how I feel. I think it’s also bad for sleep hygiene to spend so much time in the one room doing different things. If no option of other rooms though then you have to.

Yes I can definitely attest to that! I had real problems sleeping when I was a student living in one room (all sorts of MH issues at the time) and I used to feel like I was losing my mind spending all evening in there and then all night staring at the same four walls as I couldn't sleep. Put me off spending more time than just my sleeping hours in my bedroom for life, I've kept them separate ever since!

dramalynn · 30/04/2023 18:41

I spend most of time in mine when at home. Like pps I have a TV, armchair and bureau/desk/chair. And I will sit in bed when it's cold rather than put the heating on. It's like another sitting room.

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 30/04/2023 18:44

I use mine quite alot, l have two older teenagers and although we get on well we all like our own space.
l have a nice double room with a big bay window. I tend to use it more early evenings as busy in day, but lovely to sit and relax, listen to music, read etc. I don't have any tvs,
I haven't have a partner so have made it nice and feminine, I have been working hard on my garden literally all day today so it's nice to shower, change and just relax.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 30/04/2023 19:03

I have a reading corner under the skylight. In the summer I love to look out of the windows in the evening.

I spend a lot of time in bed, reading, watching shows, listening to podcasts.

I also have a yoga mat and some dumbells set up for a bit of light exercise

LibertyLily · 30/04/2023 19:04

I'm not sure why, but I always feel safer, more cocooned upstairs. As a result I do spend a fair amount of time in our bedroom (DC grown up/left home/just us two living here) during the day time.

At our last house the main bedroom was massive with a big square bay fitted with a window seat and a door leading onto a small balcony where we had a bistro table and chairs. Initially we used the room as an upstairs living room and I had all my books in there as well as a couple of sofas. Even when we changed it to our main bedroom we kept the books there and it was my retreat.

I've tried to recreate that here (sans balcony, sadly), so there's a small window seat with cushions/blankets and a view over the garden, built in book shelves from floor to ceiling and a tiny sofa. No TV. We've never had one on the bedroom but if I did want to watch anything (very rare) I can do it on my tablet. I spend a chunk of most days in bed (if cold) or on the window seat (if not), reading. I'm there now (although enforced as I've sprained my ankle) and all I can hear through the open window is birdsong.

Last year we reconfigured our living spaces and I thought as a result I'd spend more time downstairs, but I still gravitate towards the bedroom to relax.

We're currently prepping the house for sale and the small sofa is being replaced with our desk so there's a place to WFH.

zurala · 30/04/2023 19:10

I just sleep in mine. We have a no tech in bedrooms rule so no TVs in bedrooms, we have a TV in the living room and in the children's hangout room. We also have the office my husband works in which also has a multi game play table (snooker, table tennis etc) and I work at my desk in the dining room. We are lucky to have a big house but even so I've never just hung out in my bedroom, that's what reception rooms are for!

TillyTollyTully · 30/04/2023 19:13

This has been a hot topic between DH me lately as we're considering switching our room with ds1.

The only time we really spend in our bedroom is when we're in bed. I do my hair and make up in the bathroom and 4/5 times I get dressed in the bathroom too. We even have a lovely large comfy chair in the corner of our room but it's pretty much for show, it never gets used.

We have 4 bedrooms. Ours is a very large double, Dc2 and Dc3 have a medium double each and Dc1 has a single. It seems such a waste, Dc1 squashed in the single room where he actually spends a lot of time (he's 15) when our large room is just there, not used except to sleep.

We've measured up and we'd just get our kingsize bed in the small room with literally one foot of space at the end and about 2/3 foot on one side, just enough to open the door and maybe have a bookcase and a small bedside table on one side. Pretty much just a roomfull of bed 😂 Luckily we have a very large floor to ceiling built in cupboard on the landing which we'd convert to a big walk in wardrobe for us.

I'm still hesitating though because once we do it we could never undo it, it would be too unfair on ds.

Sorry, I've rambled. But no op, we spend no time in our room!

Needs somewhere to sleep!

Nimbostratus100 · 01/05/2023 07:41

wow! what an awful lot of room some people have! what a ridiculous waste! you can only be in one room at a time. You really dont need for that to be a one room in daylight hours and a different room at night. By that premise, only about half the rooms in the house are being used at any one time! That is such an ultra - privileged western world view. No wonder we have a housing crisis when people demand so many separate rooms for their own personal use.

Lol, seriously? We should all be sleeping in our living rooms? And we don’t demand them. We work and pay for them. How can you not know folks have living rooms and bedrooms? 😂

obviously people have bed rooms, and a communal living room, but there is no need for a second living room to watch tv alone in, or a study to work in, as well as a bedroom that stands empty all day

Um you posted saying rhe op didn’t need her bedroom. 😂

and you personally might not have the need, but it’s a privalage we work to afford and it’s our choice how we spend our money and how we live. As do many others. Home offices are a think you know. Not everyone has to or wants to work in their bedroom.

Nimbostratus100 · 01/05/2023 08:12

I just think it is phenomenally wasteful. I have known so many people without a bedroom at all, and all these people have one but dont use it

But we do use it to sleep in. To store our clothes and drawers.

and to make you froth even more. We have a spare room. Like many folks. Which is used when guests stay .

I went years without a bedroom. It's pretty shit sleeping in the living room. As much as I don't use it in the day I do use it 6-8 hrs a night when I sleep.

Sorry but are you being deliberately dense? People do use it - to sleep in. Do you do your taxes in your bathroom? You're wasting it then!

Spendonsend · 01/05/2023 08:23

I've left my husband sleeping in our bedroom and headed to our living space to sit without waking him. We are managing to use both rooms at the same time.

but as I said, you can only be in one room at a time, you dont need one room for day, and one for night, and leave each standing empty and unused half the time - it is a position of phenomenal privilege. It must be a tiny percent of the worlds people that are this rich
