Rail strikes over Eurovision

I know they need to make an impact with their strikes, and hitting big events makes sure they are listened to...

However, it doesn't sit right to pick the Eurovision date. We are hosting this on behalf of Ukraine, a nation ravaged by death and war. It's about them not us and I think it's in really poor taste.

With each strike I’ve had less sympathy. Had to miss many events in December. Lost money on hotel bookings etc. I’m not exactly on an amazing salary myself but wanted to support the strikes so sucked it up. They’re also striking the day of the FA cup final which is the day I’m going on holiday. Going to make getting to the airport very difficult and I can’t drive. I’ll be really fucked off I have to cancel this holiday as well. The government clearly don’t care and it feels like they’re now punishing the poorer people who rely on public transport. The people they really need on side.

Any date will cause inconvenience and clash with something.

Employer and union should get around the negotiating table.

RedRosie · 30/04/2023 10:51

Thanks @Bunnyannesummers we might park somewhere further away and catch a bus. Or even the airport ... (expensive but what the hell!)

If the government do bow to their demands though I'd remember when it comes to the next election that they value money over peoples lives. We know this anyway but I don't see how anyone could still support them.

What? The whole thing is because they want to get rid of staff to save money!

SecretVictoria · 30/04/2023 11:00

*And offer the staff who will be left worse T&Cs.

Fed up with rail strikes and I do t even use trains! Nurses and teachers really do need more pay first on the list

SecretVictoria · 30/04/2023 11:00

@RedRosie If I drive to Liverpool I park in Park Bee Central Village, just off Bold St.

@Sugarfish
The government is not on strike. Settlements have been offered. You are not poor if you are flying away on holiday, you are not poor.

Of course action is taken for maximum effect. Maybe we accept strikes by the better paid too readily and without question? I have to say none of it inconveniences me but I have a car. It’s vital now to take action for yourself. Drive and get a car!

Sugarfish · 30/04/2023 11:39

@TizerorFizz I know the government aren’t on strike, I meant they don’t seem to care much if the railway workers strike.

Like I said I have previously supported the strikes and I’m in no way against industrial action. But these strikes don’t appear to be effective in putting pressure on the right people and the ones who lose out have no power in changing things.

Also I am learning to drive but I’ve failed my test 4 times!

what about people who are unable to drive for medical reasons? Tough shit, just lose our jobs?!

I’m so, so tired of all the rail strikes. I’m due to see family I haven’t seen in 10 years on one of the strike days and I have no idea how I’m going to manage to get there. I was so excited and now I don’t know if it will be another 10 years till I get the chance again. They lost all my sympathy I’m afraid to say

Florenz · 30/04/2023 23:03

Can someone explain to me why train drivers deserve to be paid more than they currently are?
