Gas hob or Induction

Questiontellme · 27/04/2023 17:56

I'm being a complete lazy cow and hoping to piggyback someone else's research here! In my head I have that induction is a more environmentally friendly/sustainable way of cooking, is it more expensive though what with the electricity??

We cook from scratch 6 out of 7 nights.

Will be looking at a modern range. Spoke to a really helpful in most ways chap at an independent place who does the brand we're looking at and he was pushing me toward gas....but I don't know if that was because he had one of those on order for stock due in in next week or so, so would have got all his money quicker (big wait time on orders from the manufacturer currently)

I don't possess whatever gene is needed to work an induction hob (even with the instruction book!)

Gas every time for me.

I changed from gas to induction a few years back and don't regret it in the slightest! It's very quick to heat up, incredibly easy to clean, and doesn't waste any heat as it only heats the area that the pan actually touches. I did have to change some of my pans, but I think most pans these days are induction-friendly. I have a mixture of ikea and Asda neverstick and they all work fine.

We have induction and it’s absolutely fine.

Gas is being phased out slowly either by making it more expensive or just cutting supply. Personally I wouldn't install anything new gas now.

Bluebellbike · 27/04/2023 18:11

I had always used a gas hob until I moved to my current house recently. It has an induction hob and I said I was going to get it taken out and a gas hob fitted as I don't like electric hobs. My son, a chef, said I should try it first as induction hobs are the best type.
He was right. It is wonderful. A pan of water on to boil for pasta boils in a quarter of the time of a gas hob. KIt seems to heat the pan almost instantly. It's very controllable with almost as instant a change in heat as gas burners.
It uses much less electricity than any other electric hob type as it cooks everything so much faster.
The hob doesn't get hot ( the pan does).
It's so easy to clean. You may have to buy new pans ; I enjoyed buying lovely new pans though 🙂. You also have to be very careful not to scratch it.
I love my induction hob and wouldn't be without it now.

cashmerecardigans · 27/04/2023 18:11

I moved to induction from gas and I absolutely love it! So quick and so controllable. I wouldn't go back to gas

induction

burning gas is very polluting indoors.
plus cleaning a smooth surface so much easier than the fiddly gas bits.

Yes this would be my worry unless I was already off mains for gas. Once people start switching to heat pumps/ solar etc, domestic gas use likely to fall a lot.

Not really- only CO2 and water vapour. Yes it causes climate change but given a lot of electricity in Uk is gas fired, that isn’t really a difference between them.

Huge plus is how easy it is to clean. Plus it can act as another flat surface in your kitchen.

Blossomtoes · 27/04/2023 18:23

Induction. Unless you love cleaning.

Crikeyalmighty · 27/04/2023 18:26

I like my induction job as easy to clean but unlike others I think it's quite slow to heat up compared to gas

speechf · 27/04/2023 18:30

We've just replaced our kitchen and went from gas to induction with built-in extraction. Never going back. It's very efficient in heating things up. I love it.

Schabernacker · 27/04/2023 18:32

Gas. I loathe induction.

orangegato · 27/04/2023 18:32

Gas, induction is just not the same. You wanna see and feel the heat. It’s way easier to change to induction from gas so go gas then in a few years if you change your mind go induction. But it’s naff so don’t 😀

Duckyneedsaclean · 27/04/2023 18:34

Induction, no doubt

No, gas hobs cause dangerous pollution inside your home. They produce much worse than CO2 and water vapour! Read this.

Gas. Hate my induction.

OhSmitty · 27/04/2023 18:47

Induction. It cooks well and so easy to keep clean. I have gas at the moment and I hate cleaning it.

SleepingisanArt · 27/04/2023 18:48

We've had induction for 17 years and wouldn't go back. It can heat a pan of water to boiling faster than our rapid boil kettle! The hobs have come on so far since we bought ours that I am very excited to get a new one (in the next couple of years when we upgrade the kitchen).

Orangebadger · 27/04/2023 18:50

Induction every time. You can control the heat waaaay better that with a gas hob, rapid boils and very gentle simmer. Easier to clean and none of the gas sticky residue all over the kitchen!

fussychica · 27/04/2023 18:53

I cooked on gas for about 35 years. Never thought I'd have anything else. When I had the kitchen redone in this house I needed it to be sleek to help the small kitchen look as large as possible. I'd read a lot of good things about induction so went with a Neff one that came with a fabulous set of free pans.
It's now 7 years old, still looks brand new and is so easy to clean. I never need chemical cleaner, honestly just hot water and an e cloth gets it back to new in minutes. Would never go back to gas.

postitnot · 27/04/2023 18:57

Induction
-easier to clean

  • very fast
  • surface doesn't get hot ( if water boils over you can lift the pan and wipe it up)
  • kitchen doesn't get as steamy (when gas burns it releases water vapour)
RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 27/04/2023 18:59

Induction hands down. For the ease of cleaning and the extra flat surface it provides.

ohtowinthelottery · 27/04/2023 19:00

Having endured 4 days without electricity after a storm, I won't be swapping my gas hob range for induction any time soon! Prior to that incident I was seriously dreaming of an easy clean induction hob (with DS & DH battling against me). I had to concede after the power cut!
