Gas hob or Induction

Questiontellme · 27/04/2023 17:56

I'm being a complete lazy cow and hoping to piggyback someone else's research here! In my head I have that induction is a more environmentally friendly/sustainable way of cooking, is it more expensive though what with the electricity??

We cook from scratch 6 out of 7 nights.

Will be looking at a modern range. Spoke to a really helpful in most ways chap at an independent place who does the brand we're looking at and he was pushing me toward gas....but I don't know if that was because he had one of those on order for stock due in in next week or so, so would have got all his money quicker (big wait time on orders from the manufacturer currently)

Induction! My chef DH says it's better than gas and easier to keep clean too

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 27/04/2023 19:02

Induction. I wouldn’t go back to gas.

BlueThursday · 27/04/2023 19:03

Induction for me too.

Just be aware of users of medical devices eg pacemakers that it may be best not to have one

Induction. Responsive and easy to clean.

CatOnTheChair · 27/04/2023 19:21

Gas.
I hated my induction hob with a vengeance.
It beeped randomly at you when you did something it didnt like. It had 2 control levels - just about simmer or full blast. Yes, it claimed 9 levels of control, but that was a pure lie.
It took about 13 attempts at the control panel each time you wanted to switch on/off/change power.
I have gas now, and it would take a massive overhaul in gas supply to convert me back.

McSlowburn · 27/04/2023 19:30

Induction 100%!! It's been a game changer.

It's ridiculously easy to use and it's just a sheet of glass that you wipe clean afterwards.

The temperature is much easier to control too, to the point that we can use ours like a hot plate when we need to keep something warm while waiting for something else to finish cooking.

I could never go back to gas.

bobby81 · 27/04/2023 19:34

I've had both & would choose induction every time, it's so much easier to use & to clean.

hotchocdrinker · 27/04/2023 19:55

Induction every time.

RedHelenB · 27/04/2023 20:07

In a power cut you can use a gas hob, another reason to consider gas.

orangeflags · 27/04/2023 20:17

Gas.

Fifthtimelucky · 27/04/2023 23:57

I always used to have a gas hob but changed to induction about 10 years ago

The only time I regret it is when we have a power cut!

Lindtnotlint · 28/04/2023 00:04

Induction *100. Cleaner, safer, faster to heat, easier to simmer. Etc etc etc.

bear in mind many anti induction people may be thinking of experiences with electric hobs, which are totally shit and slow and very different from lovely induction.

I have watched someone severely burnt after their shirt caught fire from a gas hob, would never have again, quite apart from all the cooking reasons why induction is actually much better!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 28/04/2023 00:04

Is induction any good with a wok?

parietal · 28/04/2023 00:57

Induction with good pans. IKEA have v good cheap ones, but there are also pans sold as induction which are actually pretty rubbish (green pan). Look for a big heavy base.

BlueRaincoat1 · 28/04/2023 01:05

Induction all the way. My husband cooks loads and is v happy with the switch. We got a big induction hob, it's so quick, easy to clean and very effective. Really responsive, just a great choice.

Mobilephonesputmeninmobilehomes · 28/04/2023 01:10

Gas. I have gas but also have a single induction standalone unit I picked up for our caravan, I really don't enjoy cooking on it, I've used it when I needed an extra hob or once when our gas ran out and it was raining so I didn't feel like changing the cylinder but just don't feel like the control is sufficient, I like that I can see the gas flame and turn it up or down as I need and after 30 years I can judge it at a glance. I see lots mentioning cleaning but how dirty were your gas hobs getting? I've never had an issue cleaning mine, just give it a rub of a microfiber cloth after each use.

Induction for me too.

Induction not an option for us because of the medical device reason, but we also seem to get a lot of power cuts so gas for both those reasons,

Madcats · 28/04/2023 09:45

I've had an induction hob for 15 years. It just needs a quick wipe over with a cloth and some kitchen surface spray. Not all induction hobs are as good as each other, though, so read some reviews.

The only kitchen regret I have is ditching the gas oven. I hate our fan oven.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 28/04/2023 09:51

My mother has a Siemens induction hob and it's so good. So quick and reactive. I'd gladly swap my gas hob for one.

BananaPalm · 28/04/2023 10:02

Induction 100%! Currently have Bosh series 6 and it's great.

When I visit my mum I can't believe how much longer everything cooks on a gas hob 🤦🏻‍♀️

fivestarrating · 28/04/2023 10:51

Gas is being phased out fairly quickly (as someone already mentioned) it's going to get more expensive than electricity as it get phased out.

I've just have my kitchen changed, was on the fence about induction but it's the best change I've made. So easy to clean, quick, just as responsive as gas (more so really as the hob itself doesn't get as hot so scrambled eggs etc are easier to control when there's not much cooking time between prefect and rubbery!)

Gas and flames are much more potentially dangerous if your kids help with the cooking, I didn't know about the water vapour either - but mainly because gas it going you might as well get on board now if you are upgrading. Just as if I was buying a brand new car now I'd be looking at electric cars only.

charabang · 28/04/2023 12:26

Induction all day. Clean and reactive. all the pros of gas without the fiddly cleaning.

Mangone · 28/04/2023 12:33

I love my induction hob. I'd never go back to gas.
So easy to clean. If it gets really dirty, I just smear a little oven pride cleaner over it and cover with cling film.
Leave for 30 mins then simply wipe off and buff.
It's amazing how much muck that stuff removes. I also use it on the bottom of my pans when they get mucky too.

reelcat · 28/04/2023 13:54

Induction all the way!

Madamecastafiore · 28/04/2023 14:12

Gas. Induction ranges we've had go wrong and they're v expensive to fix. We chucked out last one after the main element went twice. First time 3 months to get spare part shipped from Italy where most parts are made, second time the parts are discontinued and the cooker which we payed thousands for is now useless!
