Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

@FrostyFifi I agree. I really expected Dublin to be pretty. It is not. I felt I had spent a lot of money to go somewhere that is not as nice as lots of English towns and cities.

I think you can give it a rest now, we get it, you didn't like it. Jeez.

Mooshamoo · 26/04/2023 00:32

Dublin is a dump to be fair

MummyNeedsADrinkDear · 26/04/2023 00:46

Prague.
Really meh. Lots of graffiti.

LauderSyme · 26/04/2023 00:57

Gosh, if this thread is anything to go by, I appear to have a very low threshold for enjoying days out. I thought the Eden Project was wonderful.

Mind you, I paid for it by doubling up Tesco clubcard vouchers, so it felt like a freebie and perhaps that made all the difference. (Don't think so though cos to me it really was fabulous!)

I was, however, disappointed by Westward Ho! which I felt utterly failed to live up to it's exclamation mark.

AskMeMore · 26/04/2023 01:10

@MenoRageisReal It is hardly surprising the food is very good in places like Edinburgh and Skye with the amount of tourists. But countries with a great food culture have great food even in tiny non touristy places. Scotland does not.

It was shit years ago too. Apparently Berkley or one of the ramdom towns in the Sonoma Valley is the place to base yourself (as that’s where the people who work in San Franciso tend to live) with just the attractions visited as and when you need to.

But to be honest the only places to see there are the bridge, the cable cars, the Charmed houses, and The Castro for the history (it’s really shit for meeting lgbt people outside Pride - for that I recommend Berkley).

Really? Admittedly I was there 20+ years ago, but I spent a week there & loved it. Alcatraz, an open-top jeep tour where the guy showed us locations from Vertigo & we went over the bridge & back etc, the MOMA, Chinatown (great then), Ghirardelli Square, the old ships, Golden Gate Park where someone was performing Doors-style music, the de Young Museum, shops with amazing art glass & a Robbie the Robot, sitting on the balcony of our wonderful hotel room enjoying coffees from across the street & watching the world go by.

Apart from the homeless/beggars, it was brilliant.

Not just for a day (though I wish it had been) Paris. Esp the boat down the Seine. Soooo overrated.

Out of all the places I thought might be mention Paris was definitely NOT one of them?! Did you go to the Louvre, up the Eifel Tower (the view!!) or visit Notre Dame and if you didn't go to the Palace of Versaille just outside the city you really missed something! I have been twice and although admittedly it was expensive this was more than compensated for by the sheer thrill of being in such a famous and historic city...The atmosphere, especially after dark, was different to anywhere else I have been and climbing the stairs and stepping out onto the outside 'balcony' of Notre Dame was terrifying and indescribable! Sacre Coure, The Moulin Rouge, the funny bad tempered rude waiters, the bread, the cheeses, the wine, and best of all the PATISSERIE!!! Honestly HOW could anyone be disappointed with Paris?! 😍

Carcassone in France, thought it would be a bit like York. But apart from the tourist trap that is the castle. There is nothing else. Was bored by day 2. Couldn't wait to go home.

First someone says they thought Paris was boring (WTAF!!!) now you say the same thing about Carcassone?! I just have to wonder what you expected to find there to entertain you, apart from the amazing spectacle that is the view of the old walled city from a distance, and simply walking around the interesting shops and sampling the good food, ice creams and wines, what else could there be? Maybe a fun fair or a couple of arcades, cinema perhaps or maybe a bingo hall?!! FFS!! Some people just have no soul and totally unrealistic expectations...perhaps do a little research before you visit somewhere? 😳

Eden Project..... Expensive bimble around a garden centre....Grin

A garden centre?! I presume you went into at least one of the 3 bio domes and weren't wearing a blindfold at the time?! I honestly don't know what to say about some of the incredibly unrealistic expectations of people posting on this thread...does anybody actually google beforehand to see if they might actually be even slightly interested in where they are planning to go?! I live 4 miles from the Eden Project and watched as it was being constructed...we have 'local's passes' (not free) and still go 2 or 3 times a year, from an ecological aspect it's extremely innovative and interesting and the children, even now they're older still love it, the horticulture changes season to season, there is always something going on for school holidays and I am NEVER bored or tired of it...the food might be a little expensive but it's all locally sourced and delicious...I think your comment says more about you than it does about the place!! 🙁

Amsterdam for me - went for a ferry day trip at Easter and it was a right dump

What did you expect if you go to a massive historical city like Amsterdam FOR THE DAY?!!! I suppose you managed to see the Leidseplein and have a few beers in one or two 'bruin cafes' maybe sample a little of something off the 'menu' if you know what I mean? Possibly a trot around the 'red light district'...did you hop on a tram to see some of the beautiful old buildings, the canals and the river? No? Did you take even a quick nip around the Rijksmuseum, probably not!! The Anne Frank house? A trip round the canals on a Rondvaart boat, oh, what's that you say? We only had a few hours...FFS!! 😡

The problem is, they couldn’t afford to maintain it as it was. That’s why they had to sell out to Merlin.

I can understand that - but some of the options such as staying over in the posh tents, the jousting, the bird shows - lovely. They don't need tons of food stands and fairground music tinnily blaring out. My disabled aunt couldn't even use the toilets without problems as they were next to useless and not disabled friendly at all. I remember going just after the Kingmaker upgrade. It was still good then. Wax works and exhibitions and the lifelike smells.....(or did I imagine that???!!)

Callipygion · 26/04/2023 06:29

MenoRageisReal · 25/04/2023 23:14

@Callipygion it depends a bit on what you like to do.

Views - go up Arthur's Seat or Calton Hill.

The art galleries at the bottom of the Mound are very good. Nice views across the gardens from the cafe on the terrace. Camera Obscura below the castle can be fun if it's your thing.

Old town - Royal Mile obviously but it's definitely a tourist trap. I prefer Victoria Street (the original Diagon Alley) down into the Grassmarket for casual pubs and a great view of the "back" of the castle. Or have a wander across the Meadows and up to Bruntsfield for some local independent shops/cafes.
Mary Kings Close tour is very interesting for the history of the plague.

New town - Stockbridge area for classic Georgian buildings and chi chi shops. Afternoon tea in the Dome on George Street or the Balmoral.
Brunch at Dishoom is insanely popular. Loads of places to eat and drink around George St/Rose St.

If you're going to Britannia try exploring some of the Leith waterfront area too. It's been gentrified a lot since I was a student!

If you're there during the Festival, the Pleasance was always good for spotting celebs having a post show drink.

The centre of the city is very walkable, have fun!

Have done a few of those already but some more great ideas to add to my list for my next visit. 😘 Thank you!

Chester. Dh promised me it was pretty and historic etc. It wasn't.

We did then manage to find a little Roman museum and that cheered us up.

Chester is lovely!

FrostyFifi · 26/04/2023 07:13

I think you can give it a rest now, we get it, you didn't like it. Jeez.

You're not the thread police, I could actually have expanded on my point bur decided to be polite.

TheOtherHotstepper · 24/04/2023 13:18

Giants Causeway - it's tiny!

I was underwhelmed by it. I was a grumpy teen when I visited it though.

inappropriateraspberry · 26/04/2023 07:54

@PriamFarrl ooh yes, Poppins! Used to get a toasted tea cake in there (also would frequent a Wimpy for those before they disappeared).

Swanage. Have had a caravan in Dorset for 20 years so have been to most places regularly. All our friends rave about it. Been twice, just don't like it.

Oh I love swanage its like it's stuck in atime warp we holiday in Dorset most years and will go into swanage,Dh feels like you though and Isn't keen.

browneyes77 · 26/04/2023 09:02

London. First time I ever visited years ago, I asked a policeman for directions.

He looked at me with complete disdain, shrugged his shoulders and rudely said “I dunno” and turned away from me.

Left a real sour taste and I’ve never forgotten it and combined with the horrible rush of the tube, it’s put me right off the place.

Also another vote for Portmerion.

Views are lovely, but when we went, there was one small cafe up a side street open. Nothing else to do. And they had a convention on that day for fans of the old tv show The Stranger. Loads of geeky people wandering around in black blazers.

We had a cold hot chocolate from the one open tiny cafe, sat and looked at the view for a bit and then left.

TheaBrandt · 26/04/2023 09:09

Agree absolutely Caradigm! If I ever met anyone in real life who said that about paris or London I would know immediately we would never become friends!

Leftoverssandwich · 26/04/2023 09:10

I feel London has been judged rather harshly there on the basis of a single police officer and a busy transport system.

TheaBrandt · 26/04/2023 09:12

Or Amsterdam! Beautiful city so much art and history.

JemimaPyjamas · 26/04/2023 09:13

@Leftoverssandwich Ha! Your last post made me giggle!

Scotland - it rained the whole time we were there, it was very grey and the food was awful.”

Scotland? The whole country 🤣 Its beautiful and produces some of the finest food in the world.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/04/2023 09:42

I really enjoyed Dublin. I am not sure why but I was rather surrpised it was a broadly Georgian city - for some completely unfathomable reason I expected the core of the city to be very medieval - sort of like York.

TheaBrandt · 26/04/2023 09:46

Dublins great we found a jolly pub with an Irish band and had sausages and stew enjoyed the bog men in the museum and Dd saw a ghost.
