Ever visited somewhere for the day and been really disappointed?

We travelled to Yeovil in Somerset yesterday for the day, wow, we were so disappointed.

It was like a ghost town. Most of the shops were shut, only a handful were open. And towards the bottom area of the town most of the shops were completely closed down.

I'd always got the impression there was a lot more to Yeovil.

We left after an hour as there was nothing to do.

@BillyAteMyChips Today 19:22
Scotland - it rained the whole time we were there, it was very grey and the food was awful.

I know, it’s awful, the sun literally never shines here. All grey: people, food, buildings. I’m interested to know which bits you got to on your day trip.

😂

Mothership4two · 25/04/2023 21:27

The thread is about being disappointed @OldHouseLover and @COPPER3 . It's probably more to do with these places not meeting expectations. It certainly was for me and Dublin as I thought I would love it. I'm sure the places people enjoyed outweigh those that they didn't

Matildalamp · 25/04/2023 21:27

Hahahah, very true 😂😂

It's about being disappointed in a place you've made a day trip to. It says it right there in the thread title.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 25/04/2023 21:43

The only places here I think Ive made a day trip to have been the ones abroad as I've visited from other places I was staying at the time - eg visited Venice and Verona from Lake Garda; Barcelona from Sitges. In the UK we tend to go places for overnight stays rather than the day .

Maybe I'm awkward !

Poppingmad123 · 25/04/2023 21:44

Barcelona. So hyped up, why?

battgirlatheart · 25/04/2023 21:53

Marrakech
what a mega toilet

Leftoverssandwich · 25/04/2023 21:53

I’m quite intrigued by the person who complained that all the things to do in Dublin involve going inside. If going inside to see/do things is an issue, does that mean that what people want to ‘do’ in a city is walk about outside?

I do find it hard to match expectations to places on this thread. I can’t really work out what some people want to do when they visit somewhere.

ArsMamatoria · 25/04/2023 21:54

Presumably Newport the little fishing town in Pembrokeshire? (Rather than Newport in South Wales, which is a dump and YWBTU to expect anything good by going there).

Nomoreminecraftplease · 25/04/2023 22:03

Peterborough. There's a reasonably People only know it because they pass through it on the train!

Mothership4two · 25/04/2023 22:05

I'm sticking up for Scotland though! How can you hate a whole country? It's huge and diverse. I have never had a bad holiday there. I love the culture and its a beautiful country. I have been many times but not gone further north than the Cairngorms so there's still lots more of explore. I have generally found the Scots to be friendly and it's the only place we've been where we were asked back to a party by total strangers!

This is such a depressing thread. So many criticisms from people who seem to want instant gratification. Forget the paid for attractions for the moment, but consider the towns and cities that are under attack - these are home and work to most of us, they are not simply there for other people’s entertainment. Think about the geography, the history, the economics of places and try to understand more about what you are seeing.
Today I was in Edinburgh, had a coffee in an independent cafe on Leith walk whose custom has suffered over recent years, not only from Covid restrictions but also from long term disruption due to tram works. I have nothing but admiration for business owners who have been so tenacious and resilient and still offer a quality service.
Nearby Calton Hill offers stunning views to the castle, to Arthur’s Seat and the crags, to Fife. For those of you slagging off Edinburgh due to the odd drunk, please look further. This city, and so many others, has so much to offer, but we all need to realise that travel, and enjoyment of destination, requires a little more understanding.

I agree with you.

I actually feel really bad for criticising Oxford - there's nothing wrong with it per se and I have been to some very rundown places and Oxford doesn't even come close in comparison - it's a perfectly nice city - i think it's just that you see places like Oxford in films and read about it in books and you have an unrealistic expectation of them (the dreaming spires!). Then when it wasn't as picturesque and pretty as I expected I felt short changed! But we still had a good time there, the tour we did of the university buildings was brilliant and our tour guide was such a funny, sweet girl.

Im going to make more of an effort next time I go to plan things beforehand and try different things (like having a falafel in the covered market😄)

What did you expect of Peterborough? The cathedral is lovely but I don’t think it’s otherwise considered to be a day trip destination?

Lapun · 25/04/2023 22:12

I loved Durham. I attended Evensong at the Cathedral and it was wonderfully atmospheric.

AskMeMore · 25/04/2023 22:15

I too have been to many countries. Only place I was disappointed by was Dublin.
But then I don't like hanging about pubs or cafes all day. Ireland is lovely, but Dublin is like a town rather than a City. Fine to pass through, but nothing more.

Solonge · 25/04/2023 22:19

Honestly, you read comments about beautiful towns and cities claiming they are boring or not enough to do. Look up the place before you visit, read about it. Decide where you want to visit and what you want to do first before you get there. Dublin, Bath, Bristol, Ludlow, Brighton, Harrogate are some of the best. What are people looking for? there is history in all of these places that you can follow by walking around them. Ludlow is full of pleasing little shops, one offs you wont find anywhere else. Brighton the same, yes there are shitty bits...but the UK is not at its best right now. Cost of living crisis and Covid along with Brexit has closed down many businesses and shops, but the history and architecture is still there. There are pubs, restaurants and cafe's, shops and parks. My parents used to say if you are bored its because you have no imagination. I tend to agree with them these days.

Londre · 25/04/2023 22:29

Ludlow, Tenbury Wells (that awful country road to get there as well!), Salisbury & Inverness.

My3cents1 · 25/04/2023 22:29

@DanceMonster Not everyone lives/lived in the Uk. I have day tripped to Vegas when I lived in Cali

Chestnutlover · 25/04/2023 22:33

Iowa. Do not recommend

hattie43 · 25/04/2023 22:34

Taj Mahal ok not a day trip but I was underwhelmed. Once you've done the iconic photo at the front that's it . Inside is plain almost a not finished shell and soo many tourists you could barely move

OldHouseLover · 25/04/2023 22:37

@AskMeMore I posted a long list of things to do & see in Dublin on about page 32 or 33. Other posters have also given lots of suggestions.
I'm wondering if you saw that & if you sought out any of these things to do?

There's so much more to Dublin than pubs or cafes!

Yes I know. My reading comprehension is really coming along. That's why I said disappointed as it's in the OP. Your comment about day trips is completely irrelevant to the point I was making. But thanks for your input

Some posters may have possibly gone on to talk about their holiday destinations rather than day trips. Threads often move on like that. It's a discussion forum. It really doesn't matter IMO

Laura1978 · 25/04/2023 22:44

Agree

MenoRageisReal · 25/04/2023 22:45

@JustInterested2 I've already apologised to @CreepingCrone and trying to find somewhere else that would appreciate the income from the plastic willy parties!

Oblomov23 · 25/04/2023 22:45

Swanage. Have had a caravan in Dorset for 20 years so have been to most places regularly. All our friends rave about it. Been twice, just don't like it.
