What have people been to see lately that they've enjoyed (and is still on...am sad I missed Come From Away).

I saw Oklahama recently and LOVED it so it's inspired me to see a few more things.

I've shortlisted 2:22 (though accidentally found out the ending so not sure if it's worth it now), Witness for the Prosecution, and Hamilton (though seats don't seem to be on sale at the moment). Interested what else is out there I should consider and haven't. No DC to consider in my choices, just for me.

Love The Play That Goes Wrong. Glad to see good comments about Operation Mincemeat - going to see it very soon!

Shoxfordian · 06/06/2023 06:02

Accidental death of an anarchist was great

Would still recommend Guys & Dolls op, you don’t have to stand if it wouldn’t be your thing

Six is amazing; absolutely love it

I’m planning to see Hamnet later this year and my dh would like to see totoro so maybe I’ll get him tickets for Christmas - it’s an annoying place to get to though at the Barbican

Shoxfordian · 06/06/2023 06:03

Would also recommend the today tix app for seeing what’s on

I loved Guys and Dolls at the Bridge Theatre. Amazingly innovative. I had a seat.

LulooLemon · 06/06/2023 22:42

Lehman Trilogy

downtonupton · 07/06/2023 13:08

I still recommend Cabaret but have seen that Ocean at the End of the Lane is coming back and that is great.

I agree with this - we saw it over half term and it was bloody brilliant.

Reckon my friend must be in the minority for Six because she saw it locally & just didn’t get it at all - she said there didn’t seem to be a proper plot & it was generally disappointing, even though the singing was great.
If ever Bat Out Of Hell The Musical comes back, grab a ticket if Meatloaf is your thing. It was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.

LlynTegid · 11/06/2023 11:48

Enjoyed Lenny Henry's play 'August in England' that I saw last week, at the Bush Theatre in Shepherd's Bush.

Six doesn't need a plot. It isn't a story!

Bat out of Hell was incredible the first 2 times I saw it. Unfortunately, the recent touring production was a huge disappointment. Key songs were removed and some reordered, so the story no longer made any sense whatsoever! If it had been my first ever experience of seeing it, I would never recommend it!

Avoid to Kill a Mockingbird if you loved the book. Too much overacting from the actors playing Scout and Jem. They could have used younger actors closer in age to the characters

BirdChirp · 11/06/2023 12:58

I've been to see Operation Mincemeat and Wicked now, thanks to the recommendations on this thread.

Loved Operation Mincemeat. Was a bit meh about Wicked, though it had its moments - I think that was influenced though by the theatre being so massive, cold and half-empty. It felt a bit 'production line' compared to the smaller shows I've seen (Oklahoma and Mincemeat).

downtonupton · 11/06/2023 13:11

I have never been impressed with Wicked - Have seen it twice wasn't impressed wither time

Also wanted to echo what @Pinkflipflop85 said about Bat Out of Hell - loved the one at Dominion Theatre in London - then saw the touring version and was very disappointed.

Oh I thought it was fabulous!

Operation Mincemeat is definitely the best thing I've seen this year though. Or maybe Cabaret was ...!

Lemursandions · 11/06/2023 19:06

I don’t particularly like musicals and thought both operation mincemeat and Guys and Dolls were brilliant - and both innovative in their own ways.

Also disagree with this - loved both the book and play. Scout and Jem were 6 and 10 in the book, so using actors closer to their ages would have been a very different experience and not what I'd personally have wanted either for the actors or audience! I personally thought the actor playing Scout was brilliant and she even won a 'best supporting actor award' for this role...

Witness for the Prosecution was really good and reasonably priced seats too.

I'm booked for The Time Traveller's Wife in October which has had a lot of publicity and looks promising.

This is what I want go book for my birthday next month. But the cheapest seats have a restricted view. Is there any point booking them, or is it just a waste of money if there are pillars/columns in the way?!?

Ooh..I didn't know about this. I love the book..hated the film, quite liked the look of the TV series
Steven Moffat obviously stole a few ideas for Doctor Who didn't he? She's Amy Pond/River Song.

There are websites where you can check the actual view from a given seat. IME they're normally fine. http://www.theatremonkey.com/venues gives advice and the theatre websites often have pictures.

@TheApplianceofScience - if you're seeing the version of Noises Off with Felicity Kendall and Matthew Kelley it's brilliant! Saw it in London earlier in the year.

TheApplianceofScience · 12/06/2023 12:09

Matthew Kelly, Liza Goddard and Simon Shepherd.

It is in Guildford at the Yvonne Arnaud.
