This bloody emergency alert

Random789 · 21/04/2023 21:07

It's going to be like when they test the fire alarm at work, isn't it?
You get more and more tense waiting for it, then three minutes before it is due to go off you forget all about it. Then it does go off and you scream like a lunatic and jump so hard that you dislocate something in your neck.

I'd rather just get fried in a nuclear attack and avoid all the stress.

Never argue with stupid people @Aslanplustwo, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Honestly some of the responses on this thread are beyond melodramatic. How do you people get through the day?

I'm not stupid or melodramatic, I'm autistic. Currently my alert is switched off. If there was an option for the alert to come through using the vibrate setting my phone is set to for everything else, or if I could set a specific tune at a volume that is normal for me (yes, I would hear it, I hear a phone vibrate upstairs and wake to anything) then I would have it switched on.

rwalker · 23/04/2023 11:12

For the life of me I can’t get worked up about this

many years ago as a child got woken up by parents in full panic mode we were being flooded had to climb out of windows as doors wouldn’t open and wade up the rd
we lost everything

systems like this would of been a massive help

Famzonhol · 23/04/2023 11:16

Well if people can’t cope with the alert they certainly won’t cope with the actual emergency. Perhaps of course that’s why they’d prefer to live in blissful ignorance.

I do anticipate the alerts going off every few days with warnings about staying hydrated and putting on a coat. The atomic bomb emergency may on the other hand not be broadcast at all as they won’t want people panic-flooding to the supermarket to stock up on loo roll.

However, we don't want to see you on MN after a disaster of some sort, moaning that you didn't have any advance warning!

Oooh, I love the idea of a post-apocalypse Mumsnet. There could be all sorts of threads about bunker etiquette and the best moisturiser for radioactive skin decay.

Here you go 😀

Don’t we? 🤣

Christ, there are some sanctimonious people around.

What the hell do you actually care what someone does or doesn’t do?

Chill out and live your own life and let other people live theirs.

I know right? My house is very quiet as I'm autistic and DS is also sensitive to noise. So we can hear a phone vibrate upstairs.

Saying first half the alphabet would escape reminds of a book z for zechariah where he was the last person left after a war

I live in a flat and can hear my upstairs neighbour's phone vibrate.

When I am alone and the house is quiet, I can hear my phone vibrate upstairs too. I don’t know why it’s so unbelievable to some unless they live in a castle with three foot thick stone walls!

This thread is without a doubt one of the nastiest things I have ever seen on here.

You are all welcome to my life if you think you would handle it better Sad

When I see someone struggling I extend a bit of sympathy and understanding. I have got the absolute opposite.

I hope you all feel good for your comments. I can't imagine what you get out of it but if that's what you need to make you all feel good enough you crack on.

The disablism and ridicule of mental illness on this thread is shocking. I have experienced hyper-vigilance following a dv attack, at it's worst for a month or two before I was able to move house, but to some degree thereafter as well. It's exhausting, I can only imagine living like that long term 💐.

I agree, it’s shocking.

Calling people “nut cases”. Not an ounce of empathy.

What's the point of knowing that a nuclear weapon is coming at you anyway? It's not like you can stop it.

NOT what it’s for!

Hawkins003 · 23/04/2023 12:51

For nukes we already have the emergency broadcast system

Scalottia · 23/04/2023 12:52

I have a question for people that are anxious about this: if you know that the alert is coming, when it is coming, and what it is for (i.e. in this case not an emergency), what is it that you are still anxious about? You know it's coming. Not trying to be goady, I am trying to understand.

I mean the OP is talking about being so shocked that they will scream like a lunatic, jump and dislocate something. How is this not dramatic? Maybe I am too calm about this stuff, but it isn't scary.

toomuchlaundry · 23/04/2023 12:57

For people who don't want to be alerted for whatever reason, why have you only just turned off the system when it has been there for ages? If you can't live with it now how could you live with it before?

For the test it's the anticipation and not knowing how loud it will be. I've listened to the YouTube clip so I know what it will sound like, slowly turning up the volume to about 1/4 volume, is full volume on my phone how loud it will be?

I didn't know about it to turn it off, and I've never had an alert. I'm sure it wasn't there three years ago when I got my phone and went through settings.

What are you thinking of?
We don't have anything in place. It is thought that this system may be used to include nuclear.

I turned it off as soon as I knew about it, I don't think there is much else anyone could have done. These options were put on our phones when they updated, I don't know what other people do but I have never been through every section of my phone after updating to see what has changed. I think its entirely normal that it has only been raised recently for us because it's going to be used.
