Thread 7 - TalkLair: “In fact it’s an oblate spheroid”

Kucinghitam · 20/04/2023 20:05

Continuation of previous threads (thread 6).
The new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey; we have truly settled here. Outside, the garden is blooming with spring flowers. Inside, the hearth is glowing, pictures are up on the walls, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

I saw the film of The Shining decades before I read the book. I was 14 when I saw it and in my forties when I read it. One of the reasons it took me so long to read it was because I thought the film was fucking shite. It was my second horror movie and I wanted to smash up Jack Nicholson's stupid overacting face and kick Stanley Kubrick up the a-hole. When I became aware that King hated the film I decided to give the book a go and it was so, so, SO much better. I love a bit of Stephen King.

MouseMinge · 16/05/2023 19:25

In my H&M X Mugler haul news. I've put two items on eBay, the gloves and the dress. I'm probably going to put the corset on there but I need to take actual photos of that rather than use the ones that are available online because I tried it on and managed to make a tiny little hole in the mesh. I might make my money back on it or not but! I've put them on as both buy now or bid and the gloves are currently going for £60 which is double what I paid for them. I'll have to sort the packaging and I'm paying for the postage myself because people are already paying out a lot ... blah, blah, blah. It's working!

MmePoppySeedDefage · 16/05/2023 22:12

Thus a business is born...

For all who are interested (I think we've discussed it in the past) I've started a Gardeners' Chat thread, for that, plus meandering:

Do pop over.

Thus a business is born...

I made a lot of money in the early 00s buying designer and designer-ish things from charity shops and selling them on eBay in its golden age. I don’t know if that’s ethically sound or not, probably wouldn’t do it now, but I was in need of cash at the time!

MouseMinge · 17/05/2023 03:58

When you need money and you're hurting no one I don't see a problem. These days too many greedy people are doing it and it pisses me off but that's mostly because I do a lot of my clothing shopping in charity shops and they're buying the things I genuinely want for myself. The bastards.

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 11:07

Why do my cats always rush indoors to puke, then saunter outside again immediately afterwards? AIBU to hate them for it? And AIBU to leave it where it is until I’m ready (nose peg, Marigolds, disgusted expression) to clear it up?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 17/05/2023 11:17

I assume they feel vulnerable, and therefore come into the safer place. Or they do it specifically to annoy and inconvenience you. Could be either, with cats.

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 11:25

My family had a boy puppy 40 years ago who rushed indoors to pee, then straight back outside again, he’d got a bit confused.

Haha! For me that would be things like Flash, Daz (which mumsnet seems to be heavily advertising atm) and Cillit BANG AND THE DIRT IS GONE.

My prejudice isn’t based on commonness, it’s because the adverts make me cringe.

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 18:31

About this time 30 years ago today, I was at the stables, wanting to go home but concerned that there was still one horse (of 18) out in the field, doing her nut at being all alone in monsoon-like rain. So I brought her in, gave her some hay, and wrote a note on the white board in the tack room, explaining to the owner why I’d done it. Then got in my car and set off home.

That’s my last memory before waking up 2 days later in the ICU I worked in, knowing immediately something bad must have happened as my parents, who lived in Singapore, were at my bedside. My first words were “Is Fly (my horse) all right?”

Half my lifetime ago, smashed to pieces in a car crash on my way home from the stables. The most significant event of my life, and I have no memory of it at all (which I realise is a good thing, probably).

My sister, bless her, phoned me earlier today to congratulate me on the anniversary of me “not dying”. I am so grateful I’ve had 30 years I could easily have missed out on.

Thank you NHS. xxxxx

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 18:34

If I’d left that mare out in the field, it would not have happened!

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 18:35

…at least not to me. The other driver would have still careered out of control on the slippery roads and hit someone else.

Kucinghitam · 17/05/2023 18:38

Bloody hell @MavisMcMinty Shock Made my blood run cold just reading about it! Happy not-dying anniversary indeed!

Very glad you’re here to tell the tale @MavisMcMinty!

Those sliding doors moments can be such a headfuck.

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 19:06

Yes! (I absolutely LOVED the premise of the film Sliding Doors, just wish I’d been more convinced by Paltrow and Hannah in their roles, they both seemed embarrassed rather than in love.)

MavisMcMinty · 17/05/2023 19:08

In more “me me me” news, the trilogy of Justin Cronin’s “The Passage” arrived today, looks like nearly 3000 pages in total! And in small writing!!

Britinme · 17/05/2023 20:54

I haven't got the first book any more and I may* have to buy it on Kindle so I can adjust the size of the print.

bignosebignose · 17/05/2023 20:55

Happy Still Alive Day! The Passage trilogy is pretty large, I hope you like it anything like as much as I did. I listen to a lot of audiobooks these days when out with the dog, mostly 8-12 hour novels. I bought the Passage a while ago and it’s over 33 hours - just the first book.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 17/05/2023 21:01

Happy 30th second birthday, Mavis!

And I agree about Paltrow and Hannah - as much chemistry as something with no chemistry whatsoever.

Isn't that just the joy of Kindle (other brands are available)! That and the ability to adjust the back-lighting, and the fact that - for bedtime reading - The Raj Quartet weighs no more than the Kindle.

UK library e-books don't work on Kindle, which is infuriating. I suspect I might get them to work on a Chrome tablet - has anyone tried this?

SinnerBoy · 17/05/2023 22:27

Happy 30th Survival Anniversary, Mancurse!

MouseMinge · 17/05/2023 23:54

Happy Not Dead Day, @MavisMcMinty ! Mine is July 23rd and it will be twelve years this year. I'm really glad you didn't die because then none of us would ever have met you and that would have been a real shame.

MouseMinge · 17/05/2023 23:59

In other news. Cats. I'm being overwhelmed by neighbour cats. Plural. I thought it was just one cat who was a girl but it is two and one is a boy which can be seen in his mighty nutsack. The girl cat is less pushy but boy cat is all "Oh, dinner time is it? I'll come in!" I told him last night that he couldn't, opened the door to gently shoo him away and he decided that meant I loved him and would happily stroke him and cuddle him. Of course, I did a little bit of that. He's very cute but I fear he'll spray in the house given he still has big old balls intact. I wish my two would do more to see off these other cats. They're bloody useless. Well, Django did give the boy cat some "get out of my flat" stuff earlier tonight but as I explained to him he needed to chase him out not further into the flat via my bedroom. The dickhead.
