If you were made a millionaire tomorrow, what would you do with the money?

Anyone ever thought about it? 😁

I'd pay off my mortgage and rent this house out. I'd then buy a bigger home and a new car. If there was anything left I'd take all my family including parents and siblings on holiday

Coffeeandbourbons · 18/04/2023 14:04

The lack of charity on here is really disappointing

Easterbunnywashere · 18/04/2023 14:18

Pay off my mortgage and put the balance in my pension so I can retire when I want to!

FilbertyGilberty · 18/04/2023 15:07

This actually happened to us.

We paid off the mortgage balance (£150k), bought a small holiday home abroad and to rent out (£100k), spent about £5k decorating our house and then invested the rest to draw an income from.

We both still work in our same jobs on the same hours but now with an increased income from investing.

So pretty boring really. I did treat myself to a laser hair removal thing at £300 though!

Here's your medal 🏅

I don’t want a medal I just think it’s a bit sad if a million quid landed on somebody’s doorstep they wouldn’t even think to give some of it away

EarlGreyAndCucumber · 18/04/2023 15:45

pay off the mortgage.
have some work done on the house.
add to the savings fund for children’s universities.
have a new patio laid, and new fences put up.
buy a new shed

and then it’s all gone.

Don’t worry, you’ll get to heaven first for having these thoughts.

Seriously? A million quid just turns up, no effort required, and hardly anyone thinks to even make a small donation?

Catspyjamas17 · 18/04/2023 16:00

Perhaps they did think of it but don't go on about how much they give to charity.

WordtoYoMumma · 18/04/2023 16:04

Half of it would go on paying off mortgage, debts and doing some house renovations.
Then £150k would be 3x£50k put aside for each of my kids for uni if they want to go.
Then we would all get 10k spending money for whatever we want.
200k in the bank for a rainy day.
100k on fun 😁

BasiliskStare · 18/04/2023 16:08

I would put some to one side for topping up pension. I would put some to one side for DCs to go towards a deposit on flat etc , some to get much needed decorating etc to house and if a windfall I would put some to one side for a couple of local charities , But I have to be brutally honest - I would not give it all away.

IfYouLikePinaCoIadas · 17/04/2023 22:04

Would you really not rather give a poor family of humans a leg up, than some random dogs? Obviously I know it's yours to spend as you wish, but that really makes me sad that there are families living in abject poverty, who could have their lives absolutely transformed with a better home.

I'd rather give to random dogs than random humans. I'd love to be able to rescue lots of dogs.

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 18/04/2023 16:14

I'd buy a detached house with no neighbours.

I wouldn't give up my job, partly because I like my job and I'd be bored with nothing to do. But also because 1 million wouldn't be enough to retire on once I'd bought the house.

TheChosenTwo · 18/04/2023 16:16

That would buy a nice house a bit further out of town where I am, somewhere with a bigger garden and bigger drive. Nothing leftover though!

saraclara · 18/04/2023 16:18

Buy both my DDs family sized houses, to replace the teeny tiny ones that are all they can afford.

Then I'd just spend my savings on myself instead of trying to work out if I can afford to help them without leaving myself without care options should I need them in the future.

Perhaps they did think of it but don't go on about how much they give to charity.

Unlikely, most of them are saying there would be nothing left over. It’s an anonymous forum so you’d hardly be covering yourself in glory saying you’d donate something. It’s just disappointing so few would that’s all. And dogs are just as valid a cause as any other

I already give to charity to a significant extent. Spending all of the windfall on my children frees up my income and savings so that I can help others that way.

Scottishskifun · 18/04/2023 16:24

Pay off mortgage
Buy parents a suitable house (DH has failing health they can't afford a bungalow in their area)
Set up investment funds for all nieces and nephews which are locked away til 21
Go on an Antarctica cruise
Have a sabbatical from work for 4 months and spend it skiing with the kids!

IsGoodIsDon · 18/04/2023 16:28

Pay off the mortgage, buy a new car, book a summer holiday and Christmas trip home.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 18/04/2023 16:31

I have seen the house I would buy.

It is £1.1 million so I would probably need to get a mortgage but it would be doable without selling the current house.

I would rent out the current house to provide an income.

The house has room for perhaps four horses so I would save on my livery bill and charge my sister and a friend a small amount of rent to keep their horses there too. It also has space for DH to expand his business a little.

I'd carry on working but enjoy the nicer house and the additional income would hopefully allow us to retire a little early.

mondaytosunday · 18/04/2023 18:18

Pay off mortgage (small) buy a small flat in more central London. That might leave about £100k which I'd divide between my kids.

Nanalisa60 · 18/04/2023 18:24

Buy my boys a house each, buy my husband a motorhome. O the joy that would bring me!!

meow1989 · 18/04/2023 18:29

Pay off the mortgage and extend
Buy myself and dh new cars
Put Ds in private school (maybe)
Have a lovely holiday
Give dsis 50k

Save most of the rest

sausagelastrange · 18/04/2023 18:44

Oh if only.....

I'd resign, rent out my house, buy a motorhome and head off into the sunset.

Then when I got home, build some kennels and set up a dog rehoming charity and become a crazy old lady with 10 dogs 🐶 😂
