Coronation Quiche Lard

BestZebbie · 17/04/2023 17:53

I have just read that the King has chosen an official recipe for the coronation "ideal to be served as the centrepiece of a Big Lunch".

It is a spinach and bean quiche, but it is made using lard in the pastry.

It is already being described throughout the media as "a vegetarian quiche".

Obviously, a lot of people will not have lard and will in fact actually make a vegetarian coronation quiche using their normal pastry recipe or bought pastry (e.g.: accidentally vegetarian).

But I forsee a lot of confusion with vegetarians having to ask for exact ingredients and/or accidentally eating lard over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend (during which we are being nationally encouraged to make this recipe and share it with potential strangers).

Spinach and bean is a weird combination for a quiche, especially one that isn't suitable for vegetarians.

Maybe they've mixed up two recipes and there's a meat version with lard pastry, because that's traditional and better pastry, and a vegetarian one where they've subbed meat for the beans and spinach (sorry, still weird to have beans in quiche) and obviously just butter, or vegetable fat for the pastry (or use ready made because just about all bought pastry is vegetarian or even vegan, not that that's a consideration for quiche.

If they're trying to introduce something as iconic and long lived as Coronation Chicken, then I'm not sure spinach and bean quiche is the way to go. Who invented this abomination?

Spinach and bean quiche sounds awful. I'd be surprised that a vegetarian wouldn't know what lard is though.

Why isn’t it a quiche?

Bovrilla · 17/04/2023 18:34

Trex is vegetarian "lard" and works exactly the same

ClassicLib · 17/04/2023 18:35

Spinach & bean quiche with lard? Er, I’ll pass, thanks…

ShandyQuaffer · 17/04/2023 18:37

https://www.royal.uk/coronation-quiche-0 Broad beans, spinach and tarragon- sounds nice.

Who will be making it? Not me for starters (or main ha ha!)

That bloody awful jubilee trifle has put me off royal recipes for life!

bellac11 · 17/04/2023 18:44

You can get veggie lard and veggie suet.

Not necessarily considered as good as their non veggie counterparts but you can get them nonetheless.

Strange to suggest that it's not a quiche when it clearly is...

Flan, I'll give you.

But quiche has been around for a century in the UK. First used in 1925. So hardly a new fangled idea...

I dont like broad beans but spinach and tarragon sounds nice

Also it doesnt claim to be vegetarian on the website, so they could use normal lard no probs

bellac11 · 17/04/2023 18:47

Its not as good as the recipe for his mum.

Spinach and bean quiche sounds awful. I'd be surprised that a vegetarian wouldn't know what lard is though.

But they might be served it by someone who doesn't know. If everyone is calling it vegetarian, then it's likely to be mistaken

Umm.. I’ve called them quiches my whole life - as did my mum - they’ve been described as such since 1925 - 100 years isn’t that recent for me!
I find it odd you’re complaining about people calling a quiche a quiche! 😂

FurAndFeathers · 17/04/2023 18:50

Also @KirstenBlest savoury tarts don’t necessarily have a custard filling. Quiches do.
so it’s a more accurate term.

quiches are a type of savoury tart in the same way that brioche is a type of bread.

Lard is traditionally used as pastry shortening - I’m surprised at the surprise at that. There are plenty of alternatives - trex or even just butter work fine but traditionally pastry is made with half butter half lard as the fat

FWIW I’m vegetarian and don’t feel ‘excluded’ 🤷‍♀️

Spendonsend · 17/04/2023 18:53

I think it sounds nice. Its an easy dish to share and take to a street party.

I just hope the supermarkets have enough eggs.

so why are you objecting to them calling a quiche a quiche?

OzziePopPop · 17/04/2023 18:55

Sounds disgusting… I always make my shortcrust with all butter and an added egg. My mum uses the lard/marg recipe but I strongly prefer mine!

God this is pedantic. Veggie lard/lard substitute, is there really a difference?

And the QUICHE is not claiming to be vegetarian in any case so they can use Lard Lard. (if they want)
