Coronation Quiche Lard

BestZebbie · 17/04/2023 17:53

I have just read that the King has chosen an official recipe for the coronation "ideal to be served as the centrepiece of a Big Lunch".

It is a spinach and bean quiche, but it is made using lard in the pastry.

It is already being described throughout the media as "a vegetarian quiche".

Obviously, a lot of people will not have lard and will in fact actually make a vegetarian coronation quiche using their normal pastry recipe or bought pastry (e.g.: accidentally vegetarian).

But I forsee a lot of confusion with vegetarians having to ask for exact ingredients and/or accidentally eating lard over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend (during which we are being nationally encouraged to make this recipe and share it with potential strangers).

Sometimes, if you ask someone if something is vegetarian/kosher/halal, you will be told yes even though the person being asked might not be entirely sure.

seems a bit harsh to hold the Royals responsible for idiots and liars.

though they have a strong track record in that area so maybe not 🤷‍♀️

FWIW dairy isn’t generally Kosher so quiche wouldn’t be considered kosher regardless of the pastry ingredients.

notangelinajolie · 17/04/2023 19:27

I think we need to credit vegetarians (or anyone else who doesn't eat pig) with some intelligence here. I am quite sure they would know about lard.

My mum's pastry was the best, it literally melted in your mouth and she always used lard. I use Trex which makes nearly (but not quite) as nice pastry as hers.

RhymingGuitars · 17/04/2023 19:27

I'm disappointed that it doesn't use seasonal veg. I know you can harvest broad beans as early as May, but they are usually more in season in July. I would have thought using seasonal veg was more in keeping with KC3's ethos.

Still I suppose broccoli quiche/tart/flan is a bit boring and wild nettle quiche/tart/flan might be too out there!

@FurAndFeathers but if you keep kosher you could eat a veggie quiche as a milchig meal. Obviously you’d not make the pastry with lard, but butter or parev margarine should be fine.

WheelsUp · 17/04/2023 19:35

If they're trying to introduce something as iconic and long lived as Coronation Chicken, then I'm not sure spinach and bean quiche is the way to go. Who invented this abomination?

Very strange recipe to pick. I didn't make the jubilee trifle either but at least that looked memorable.

In that paté?

Yes but I think it’s unlikely that most street party quiches will be made with kosher dairy. So the PP point that it is the lard that makes the dish unsuitable for sharing isn’t accurate.

ImSweetEnoughDarlin · 17/04/2023 19:39

*isn't that

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 17/04/2023 19:42

I'm an omnivore but I agree it seems silly to have the official recipe for an otherwise vegetarian-friendly dish made with lard. They should have used a substitute and noted that lard could be used if preferred.

I think it’s even more unlikely that most street party quiches will be made with home-made pasty. Jus-Rol FTW!

(More seriously, really observant Jews simply wouldn’t eat anything at a shared meal outside of the Jewish community and would bring their own food).

Its not as good as the recipe for his mum.

100 times yes to this. Coronation Chicken is a thing of beauty.

beanquiche · 17/04/2023 20:10

How did a thread on a quiche become so heated? (Hate warm quiche)

It is but not Costa living friendly and also i think they are trying to be more respectful with the whole commonwealth thing

CrazyCatsRock · 17/04/2023 20:22

When it’s important to someone not to eat certain foods, they should check the ingredients. I do. Hopefully people are more knowledgable than to call something with lard in ‘vegetarian’ anyway.

I’m a vegetarian who does know what lard is but I’m also gluten free.

I could definitely never figure out an alternative to wheat flour.

Definitely exclusionary
😉

Yes, gluten-free vegetarian here, too.

I’ve just watched the end of the One Show: the suggestion I saw for a Coronation party was something made with filo pastry. I didn’t see the first recipe but gather it was some version of a chicken sandwich.

I hope the remaining ones aren’t all based around wheat. 😉

As usual, if I am invited to a similar event I take my own food.

Mum2jenny · 17/04/2023 20:42

Spinach and bean quiche/ tart, just no.

Totally revolting imo. Doesn’t matter what you call it, it’s not going to be good to eat.

ThankmelaterOkay · 17/04/2023 20:48

No one likes fucking quiches.

Appropriate really.

LudicrouslyCapaciousBag · 17/04/2023 20:53

You're not wrong. Not that I dislike either broad beans or spinach - just not in a quiche together. Especially if served cold.

I think I might go for Coronation chicken followed by a Victoria sponge.

People on the sex board talk about their love of watching people fuck melons and raw chicken, so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind quiches. 😬They’re ok with a lot worse things too from what I’ve seen over the last few days.
