Coronation Quiche Lard

BestZebbie · 17/04/2023 17:53

I have just read that the King has chosen an official recipe for the coronation "ideal to be served as the centrepiece of a Big Lunch".

It is a spinach and bean quiche, but it is made using lard in the pastry.

It is already being described throughout the media as "a vegetarian quiche".

Obviously, a lot of people will not have lard and will in fact actually make a vegetarian coronation quiche using their normal pastry recipe or bought pastry (e.g.: accidentally vegetarian).

But I forsee a lot of confusion with vegetarians having to ask for exact ingredients and/or accidentally eating lard over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend (during which we are being nationally encouraged to make this recipe and share it with potential strangers).

An imported word! Practically all our words are imported. Do you call a duvet a continental quilt?

potatowhale · 17/04/2023 19:00

If they'd used meat loads of people wouldn't have been able to eat it and people would complain if their kids had to make it at school. As it is I'm hoping the schools can bulk buy tarragon and also that they have warned tarragon and broad bean suppliers of the incoming demand. I can only assume it was designed in consultation with some sort of British farming association and they said look since brexit we can't export our beans or tarragon.

Well quiche is actually thought to be German in origin so it seems pretty fitting for the Royal family 😂

'The French dont even have a word for entrepreneur'

G. W. Bush

(apparently he never said that but I still enjoy it)

This thread has reminded me that at my brother's prep school they weren't allowed to say quiche Lorraine, they had to say bacon and egg pie 😂

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2023 19:06

@00100001 , not all of them.

WhoWants2Know · 17/04/2023 19:07

I've never met a vegetarian who

a) didn't know what lard is, and

b) wouldn't be able to identify a suitable substitute

It's not like vegetarians as a whole have never made pastry before

KirstenBlest · 17/04/2023 19:08

@ShandyQuaffer , quite rightly so Wink

Its not suitable for me either because I dont like broad beans

So what?

Theres not going to be one dish that every single person can eat or wants to eat. Its not compulsory to either serve, cook or eat.

It also doesnt claim to be vegetarian which bit of that dont you get.

So you'd rather they use the term savoury tart because Quiche is a French import.... The savoury tart ...that comes from French 'tarte' and 'savoure'...

Right....

notprincehamlet · 17/04/2023 19:11

spinach, broad beans and tarragon
Sounds a bit sausages and plants and goldfish

I’m a vegetarian who does know what lard is but I’m also gluten free.

I could definitely never figure out an alternative to wheat flour.

Definitely exclusionary
😉

Despite the fact that you've made yourself look a a bit of a numpty, with your objection to lard lard, difference between lard substitute and veggie lard and savoury tart issues, you're still hammering on.

Good on you.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 17/04/2023 19:19

I'm sticking with vegetarian unfriendly coronation chicken. If I attend a street party I will also supply a vegetarian, coronation chickpea salad.

It is a bit annoying that they could so easily have made it vegetarian.
Not that I am going to any street parties. <puke>

Unsure33 · 17/04/2023 19:24

I am not vegetarian , but if I was cooking for a vegetarian I would definitely know not to put lard in .

they just tried the recipe on telly and said it was tasty .

you can’t please all of the people all of the time

Chewbecca · 17/04/2023 19:25

I think it sounds lovely. If it was black, haricot, kidney type beans, it would be weird but broad beans will be in season or are great frozen too. It doesn’t suggest double podding them which I think is a mistake, it is what converts haters to lovers.
